Windows Longhorn.

What do you guys think about it? I have tried it. Its ok, takes a shit load of RAM. Very nice graphics though. Tell me what you think of it.

I'm sure Intel and Kingston are glad to hear that. Newer OS that requires you to upgrade your hardware... can you say conspiracy?

I've heard a few things about Longhorn, but only from people on the internet. I haven't looked into it or anything, so what's the deal?? Is it gonna be something new and exciting or just another money-making scheme with pretty graphics??

don't those two option mean exactly the same thing to the average consumer these days?

thereve been posts on this in the past, searching could scrounge some decent info. i know that at least one TA is or was working for Micro on Longhorn, so perhaps the Washington forums could also help...

besides what fun would Word be if you didnt have to buy a new computer to run it! lol|

Yeh, it's been released to certain microsoft beta testers but there are a bunch of copies that always leak out for each build. I downloaded a build of longhorn a couple months ago, but I heard there were a bunch of memory leaks in the code so I never installed it.

what kind of name is long horn?

Where is Windows MassiveDildo?

or Windows HugeCarrot

or Windows ErectWang

?

i swear .. it seems every windows that comes out, they recommend double the RAM as the previous predecessor version of Windows... does anyone here have Server 2003?? how much RAM do they suggest? i know this is good for Kingston and the rest of the memory companies, but we all need RAM of course.. it's not like they are struggling in the sales department.. all servers need RAM.. we don't want our system to be paging all the time.. if you went back in time during Windows 3.1 days, and told users that in the future, Microsoft recommended computers to have at least a gig of RAM and there were 200 GB hard drives and terabyte servers running, they would laugh at us, and think we are stupid.

even though space in a computer is not larger than outer space, and you can do absolutely anything on a computer, and still have enough space (unless you are a flogging leech who downloads a 10 gigs a day, then you need therapy). but i think in the future, companies will take disk storage for granted, and recommend that we have massive storage devices installed in our computers in order to run top quality apps.

now we have to wait and see if network bandwidth can match the same speed as a system bus. it can be possible.

They'll probably have new ram that are faster, where you'll need less RAM sticks with equivalent speed to more RAM sticks. Kinda the idea with DRAM, DDR, Rambus.

May be going with the windows theme theyll have "Ram-ildo"

Posted by igottaknow on Nov-07-2004 03:59:

Since most users would agree that Windows needs to improve security, stability, and ease of use. I'm not sure why more ram would be necessary to achieve these goals?

Posted by itsTrueSonic on Nov-07-2004 04:01:

thinking outside of ram, have you ever tried to run tests on your cpu, and see how much cpu power windows apps run in longhorn? in xp, they use a lot of cpu, but then again i am on a celeron. i heard it's a little bit better management in the pIV, but not as significant.

Posted by igottaknow on Nov-07-2004 04:11:

Most programs today are a patchwork of bloated, poorly written code that use ram inefficiently. Microsoft is the king of bad code and are synonymous with memory leaks. They depend on faster cpu's and more ram to mask their ineptitude.

Weren't they going to make Longhorn to help "prevent piracy". That was a word back in the day, I haven't checked into it for awhile though.

Take any pics?

You should be more concerned about picking a next-generation CPU before trying to run a next-generation OS. Anyhow, newer OSs --> more functions --> need for more RAM. Yes, this is a greatly simplified version of the situation but it works for this. If you want to be using OSs with better capabilities, it's a no brainer that you are going to at least need more RAM/CPU/whatever to run it.

i have it, but haven't installed it. the installation setup looks pretty cool. i probably won't touch it. the beta has something like 180 day trial so, why bother with installation? plus, my cpu isn't all souped up and upgraded.

Posted by DJ Coleman on Nov-07-2004 05:07:

Ok guys, the reason for the new Microsoft Longhorn which isn't going to be released untill 2006. Is for the next generation in Windows. Its like windows XP/linux/mac . Its all together. There working on a nice broswer, much like Firefox. The public beta should be out in 2005. I'll post it as soon as I know. If you find any graphics from Build 7074 post them on here.

Posted by ShadoWolf on Nov-07-2004 05:43:

Longhorn won't even include the new file system. They pushed that back another two years.

Posted by MERLIN on Nov-07-2004 08:16:

last i heard which was last year since i havne't kept up was that they had a beta, but then trashed all the code and started over for some reason. but i guess they gotta beta going on again from whats been said in this thread.

Posted by AwakenedAddict on Nov-08-2004 14:09:

The official planned release date for Window Longhorn is Dec 31, 2006. Last I heard (from Neowin)

Posted by born2trance on Jan-30-2005 20:44:

im bout to mount the [iso] beta and see what its like, prolly as my main os to see if it will hold. i dont mind data loss, got it all backed up now.

hope 1gb ram will be enuff, hahahha
