Avalon is a mess!
Have you been to Avalon lately?
I would actually like to see Christopher Lawrence and Marco V coming up but I've been having second thoughts because lately the crowd has really put a damper on my festivities. I've gone to clubs hundreds of times and was one of the only white guys and I'm comfortable with that, but couldn't the crowd be a little more on the younger side? Couldn't they take 2 less E? Couldn't they bogart a little less of the space so I can move?
Most of all my girlfriends have been Asian and I lived in Asia, but 55 year old Asian Fob's who are completely banged up on 3X and Ketamine isn't that cool!
The setup is so packed with those huge blocks in the middle of the dance floor and that empty stage on the side...it's simply ruining my vibe.
Sorry, I've only lived in New York for 6 months so I'm not used to this as much. Can't the crowd just be a little younger and slightly more toned down? Take examples from Zouk in Singapore or some clubs in Hong Kong, Tokyo, etc. that add a little more class, still have some side entertainment, and still have wild (but still in control) trance nights.
It's New York...the standard should be higher.
I know you native New Yorkers out there know more of what's going on than me.... so why has all this mess happened just recently?

i couldnt agree more with you. when limelight shut down they should have never opened that place back up. avalon sucks.
haha....i feel that same. That was one of the reason I didn't want to go to old EXIT. Baiscally, all the old FOB's @Avalon came from EXIT.
And also, from what I know the main promoter for this venue is an Asain (Eddie Lee resident@Avalon?), so figure out y now?

Avalon still sucks. I havent went there for years and went to Ferry recently. It still sucks. Ferry is awesome but the location is just not right. If I cant feel completely comfortable with my surroundings I cant have a good time. I didnt stay very long for that and other reasons. I brought my bf out who hasnt gone out since forever to try to get him to have some fun. He is one of those people that says "things arent the same since 1999-2002" so for him there is no more reason to go out and party. I thought seeing Ferry would make him change his mind a bit since he likes Ferry as a producer and DJ. It was the exact opposite. He left before Ferry even came on and told me never to ask him to go out to a party again.
When we got there, there was another event going on called Hunk O Mania and he was disgusted at the oily steroid pumpers dancing on tables. Then after that security kept buggin him because all he wanted to do was take a nap before Ferry came on. There were other people there vomiting all over the place or acting out of control and of all people they wanted to bother him and shine lights in his face each time he managed to dose off. That didnt make him very happy either. So far this year the only events I actually felt comfortable at were Crobar and Central Park events. Its a shame but I dont think it gets much better than that in NY. Sorry about the rant, but I think if its gonna be like this, might as well go to raves, at least the people are friendly and the vibe is different, and even if someone is all drugged up they keep to themselves, mind theyre own bussiness and leave other people alone.
Hunk O Mania?? Girls Gone Wild?
i think its clear what kind of crowd they are trying to draw in these days. and mission accomplished.

Theres no comparison.
bring back the TUNNEL!
I wish I had the fuckin money to buy a building in the city and organize the best club there ever was, but thats all I dream....I am just hoping there is someone out there like me that feels the same and actually has the money to do something about it.
What are you supposed to do? Ban 55 year olds from Avalon? You can't control that.
the best was that dude getting head behind us during ferry... i don't understand what it is about avalon. they bring in decent DJs but can't seem to match crobar in terms of its clientele. i've had some spectacular nights there... JXL, sasha NYE, ferry 2x this past year, but there've also been some nights where i just wanna slug the next dude or girl that bumps into me without so much as an apology. i don't know how you can have such differences in crowds on any given night. even crobar doesn't have that stuff. i've found the crobar crowd to be much more civilized. could be the 21 and over thing, might not be. either way, the potential of the DJ has to overcome all the negatives of avalon in order for me to go there. that's my criteria nowadays heh.
Crobar is definitely better but most of the DJ's there are house guys. Avalon has the trance and hard house guys that I want to see as a change of pace. I guess I go out enough I don't want to get stuck going to the same spot over and over again.
I think that particular wack crowd is drawn more into the harder edge guys. Mauro Picotto is a prime example. Or even Bad Boy Bill. That was horrendous! I wasn't feeling that one bit. Why was I there? I must have been smoking crack.
People take drugs at Central Park gigs and other places of the world I've been to and it's cool. In Asia too, that's not the point. Taking E or whatever, I don't care (believe me, I've done it myself). But they aren't so wacked out of their freaking minds that it completely overwhelms the rest of the people like the crowd at Avalon.
I'm almost 29 years old, my tolerance is getting less and less. Should I be at home with 3 kids watching Sponge Bob? Not yet....
My idea for a club has always been to have one whole side of the club to be an open window. So when you're dancing, the outside moon is shining into the club. The moon would be behind the DJ. It kind of sounds stupid but if it was done the right way. But the club would be on the waterfront so you're dancing looking towards the waterfront. It's a bit of a stretch..... but just my irrational ramblings.
I understand the difficulties in running a club, it's a nightmare. Police, drugs, fights, booking talent, staying ahead of the times, drink theft, door guy discounts, etc.
It's just that Avalon does get a lot of DJ's I want to see. Is there something they could do to make it not such a cess pool? I'm not the expert.
My buddies that have been to Toronto say that Guvernment is awesome. So I'm looking forward to going there and seeing everything next month.
I guess me being the newbie to New York, I have high expectations for the club scene here. We sure get a boat load of good DJ's but we just need better clubs to experience them in with cool, classier, better looking crowds.
The sideshow freaks are ok sometimes but it has gone a little too far.
Oh well... I guess I'll stop bitching now.

totally agree with the avalon post...i spent almost every weekend ther last winter had amazing times!!! but its on its way down and quickly for me it all started when i went for G&D a couple of months i was disgusted in the vibe and the crowd it was depressing i never left a club feeling so bad in my life fuck Avalon they allowed it the get this way the limelight isn't around for a reason DONT TRY TO BRING IT BACK! I've actaully become a big Crobar fan , thats a classy club with a slight underground feel to it good DJ's not many trance but agreat vibe as much as i love Marco V i jsut can't get myself to go to avalon Marvo V would blow the roof of Crobar even Spirit ANYTHING but Avalon!
Re: Avalon is a mess!
New Yoookers know how to party hard.. lol...
I do hear your point, plus most fob asians in the clubs have reverse psychology, usually people are very lovy dovey and friendly on E, but those fawker seem to take them backwards or something.. Once I offered a light to a guy who been trying to light up his cigarette for 10 minutes with matches, but since his eyeballs where above the forehead, couldnt.. so instead of thanking me, he pushed me the fawk outta the way.. and ye, he was rollin...

Guvernment is AMAZING club..
can't wait to go to guv sometime after this winter...
Avalon is a trainwreck!!!!!!!!!!!!1
when was avalon in nyc ever a good club? am i missing something???
Avalon doesn't seem to be highly looked upon. I'm visiting NYC nov. 18th to 21st and plan on hit Crobar 19th for glaude/doc night and saturday 20th looks like avalon for carola and smith. Now drugged up scummy people don't bother me much (got plenty of them in Chicago, but I'm trying to figure out if that's all that wrong with the place. All I care about is good music (carola and smith should provide), sound quality not being crap, a place to put my ass every now and then, not to much of a hassle for "indulgence", and slightly liberal dress code. Drugged up morons are everywhere. Good music is harder to find.
