Smiley DJ What do you do while...

When you have a five minute track playing out and you already have your next track beatmatched and cued up?

Do you:

A. Pretend that you are looking for a certain record
B. Dance
C. Stand around and look stupid
d. Drink your beer
e. talk to your buddies off to the side of the booth
f. leave the tables and walk around
g. turn knobs on the mixer like you are actually playing the song live

Believe it or not I've seen Dj's do all of the above.

Sometimes I stare at the groove of the playing record just to know how much 'til the breakdown, how much longer is left in the breakdown, how much is left of the song, etc. It beats staring into space while the song is playing.

well, i turn the right knobs and faders so I am actually effecting the song live. even better is when there is an FX unit to f*ck with.

and whilst doing it all, i usually leave the other record playing, to get the pitch super fined tuned for a smooth mix. or, if there are 3 tables going, throw the next one in.

I also like to bring in the incoming early, as a teaser, then bring it out, recue and bring back in later.

H. mac on the honeys in the club

Hmm not common though, but I usually either tweek the EQs and change the track abit, or mess with the effects and try and add something to the playing track, or drink beer, or cue up my next track if there is a third deck, but if there is a third I try and think up a way of throwing in an accapella and really blowing the crowd away.

But its been awhile since I was last in front of an crowd.

Posted by on Nov-10-2004 05:17:

Tweek the EQ's, Drink beer, chat with mates that are chillin, respond to MSN msg's... Or like posted above.. just let the cued track keep play to get it as precise as possible. It make look like you are having a hell of a time beatmatching to the crowd... but really, you just making it as smoooooooth as possible...

Posted by tu_face on Nov-10-2004 09:27:

i beatmatch something else on another deck and whack it in over the top.

gives you something to do for 5 minutes

Posted by nrjizer on Nov-10-2004 09:52:

beatmatch on my third deck and/or sample off it.

Posted by montie on Nov-10-2004 11:57:

drink my gin and tonic
light up a cigarette
talk to my buddies
and make sure i have the next track as perfectly beatmatched as possible

or if the track isn't too interesting, get a track that is in a compatible key and mix that one in and forget about waiting for the outro

Usually I dance, bounce about, have a laugh and generally try to connect with the crowd. The more enthusiastic you are about the music, the more enthusiastic your dancefloor will be.

The few-minute-wait you described is also great for going through your box and starting to plan the next few tracks. I generally try to think between 10-30 minutes ahead and try to plan tracks accordingly.

Isn't it kinda hard to dance and drink at the same time?

No. It is the easiest way to solve your drinking problems. You never drink too much...

haha, this is so true. i ask them to wait a moment because i'm mixing. what i "forgot" to tell people is my mixes takes up to 3 or 4 phrases so they leave.

Posted by wiregen on Nov-10-2004 18:18:

I go physcho and wont wait for the track. I mix 1 min before the breakdown where the buildup of the next track will usally happen...then again all my tracks I edited to my own liking...so Im liking always doing something LOL...those times where I wanna take a break I go around and "interact" with the ladies if you know what I mean heh heh.

Posted by raaven on Nov-11-2004 06:07:

I mix.

If I have a third deck I'll sample off that or tease the new track in.

It's so fucken boring to just fuck around while a track plays. I mean if you have to talk to people or whatever 'cause shit is goin' on around you then whatever but when I'm in a groove fuck off and let me mix damnit.

Just playing and mixing two records from outro to intro is fucken boring.

The way I see it is that if you have enough time to pretend to do something then you might as well do it. Make yourself busy.
