TA vs Tribe....? Trance is it Dead in TO

Heres the deal...i read TA and Tribe pretty regular....It is kind of intresting to hear the different POV...obviously or else what would be the point of being a part if a community and voicing an opinion.

But this had to take the cake..I have read a lot BS that comes out of Tribe for quite some time. Some of you might already know, that its who you blow...i mean who you know to get onto tribe...Some of the people i think really don't know what they are talking about for example

http://www.tribemagazine.com/board/...&threadid=79876

Some of you know me...know i am not a big trance head...but i do enjoy a great Trance Set every once in a while

Is Trance dead in Toronto...i do admit that there are more place to see house, progressive, ect ect...I don't think it is dead...we get a very good selection of Trance DJ's coming to visit TO

Its defenitly not the clothes we where that makes us listen to genre of music - i almost fell out of chair laughing when i read that!

Just looking some insite from some people who do know what they are talking about

Peace
Colin

i am on Both

not to mention that i like many genres of musik!!!!

Trance is still alive - don't you worry

Tribe can be quite rediculous - just let them be!

Posted by LKD on Nov-11-2004 03:48:

trance wont die unless there is a cult that follows it and we ahve a few parties in TO that happen on weekly basis that nobody shows up for...why? cos they are just small names to them and TO is spoiled in terms of international headliners.

Trance isn't dead

just dead on Tribe

ever since this thing called Tranceaddict came around

Posted by petro on Nov-11-2004 04:05:

it all depends what your definition of dead is? A genre becomes "dead" when DJs are still playing the same damn songs from years ago, it is no longer innovative. For me its dead, simply because i grew out of it. Most people moved onto prog, house, and tribal, genres that are constantly changing. The club scene has moved on too, become more diverse. There's nothing wrong with trance, its a nice stepping stone into EDM...

Posted by DigDeep on Nov-11-2004 04:18:

I had this convo the other day. Most people "in the scene" i find take a natural transition when it comes to genres. Most who start listening to EDM get into trance to start for obvious reasons. One of them is because of the mainstream qualities surrounding the genre. Look at the dj's....Tiesto, AVB, PVD, Corsten. These are names that even some who ARENT in the scene, could be familiar with. Since the local talent in Toronto is mostly prog/house based, its only natural to expand your musical interests overtime. The only club in Toronto that consistantly has trance in its rotation, is The Guvernment. If you make regular trips to Boa-Redux, System, even the Docks trance is rarely heard with maybe the exception of lounge/side rooms. In the UK trance is still the mainstay, but in Toronto - its a completely different story.

Theres actually quite a few people who are both on Tribe & trancEaddict, me being one of them. Big difference between the two for sure, but to say that the people on that board dont know what they're talking about is a pretty rediculous statement. Maybe since most of them dont listen to trance as much as TA's they are a bit uneducated about the genre. You have to remember....Tribers are blunt and to the point, sometimes coming off a bit rude (all in good humour). I think the musical interests on that board is actually a more accurate reflection of what the city is into these days.

Fuck TBK and everyone who follows them. They don't even come out to parties anymore and they've all retired from our scene. All they do is bitch and complain about everything on their boards.

There is no "UNITY!" with them and when you do come across them in person ... they are too cool to talk to ppl. That's one thing we in TOTA should never become like. You can go upto any TA and talk to them and etc, there will be no attitude and shit.

Fuck all the TBK groupies 4 LIFE!

Trance still has the biggest pull, out of all the genres in the scene. Think about it, who got voted time top DJ 3x in a row ... Tiesto, Tiesto and Tiesto, why ? B/C HE SPITS HOT FIYA!

Posted by girllovingtvibe on Nov-11-2004 05:09:

on both - kind of like to surf them all :-) Their is unity within them all

I like it all and appreciate it all!

Lets just simplify things here........

Tribe = house.
TA = trance.

Posted by drewfactor on Nov-11-2004 05:21:

Trance, no matter what...always gets my vote. I, like many people, had trance as an introduction to EDM, but I always come back for more...always. Doesn't matter how much people diss it, how they sneer at me and say "ugh..I can't stand it with all them lazer sounds and power synths...blah!"

No doubt, trance is the biggest genre that is "diluted" with the most garbage productions and djs, but still...there's so much good stuff still.

Also, it's true that trance djs still have some of the biggest pull when it comes to big parties. Maybe that's a reason for it's demise..knowing that you're going to a big trance party means standing like a canned sardine in an unbearably stifling hot club.

every friday at viva 1000 people trance party ... trance is very live here because we have mark olive 3am to 7am as resident.

Tribe has never been an outstanding resource for say trance releases, upcoming parties or new trance news. Regardless, in terms of general discussion that board largely eclipses this one. Not a low blow to T.A, not at all. Just depends what you read either board for.

In regards to trance being dead. I almost want to start an argument about THE sound of the last two years sounding NOTHING like trance, but Ill refrain. Id be quickly refuted by Tiesto winning no.1 encore. Blah Id be hard pressed to name one trance single from last year that blew me away. Seriously. My personal taste? Doubtful, one only has to listen to say the Radio 1 Essential Selection (has always been regarded as industry standard gold ) to notice that the big sounds of the last few years have NOT being trance.

Or wait, was the argument about trance being dead in Toronto? Im confused now. Hah

Listen to Emery - he knowith of what he speaks.

Posted by kron on Nov-11-2004 10:16:

i guess a lot of people branched out to other genres but quite a lot of them still enjoy trance. Just not as die hard as they used to be. I'm really liking breaks for well over a year now but I have to say i still enjoy quality trance. : )

Posted by Jayx1 on Nov-11-2004 12:11:

Trance isnt dying. Trance has shifted. Just like all the other sounds its modernized itself. Epic trance? Yes thats definately dead. Trance sounds more like a blend of trance, prog and techno now. But thats natural. Just look at what house was 10 years ago compared to today. Or how rock has changed throughout time.

Thank god epic trance is done. That stuff was one vocal away from being Europop.

As for Tiesto. The reason he's number 1 is not because of his great mixing skills. Its because hes had a few songs on the radio and hired a really good publicist. Number 1 does not automatically mean good. If thats the case then why was britney spears number 1 on the radio for so many years?

Tiesto was ranked by a "popular vote", Britney Spears was based on success / albums sold.

Regardless, Britney is good at pop based on that principal. Her music is not good based on your standards (nor mine for the record), but in a way it does automatically dictate success / good. And therefore the same applies to Tiesto.

Trance is "shifting" of course, but am I safe to say it's shifting into something less and less to which defines it in the first place? (and more into other genres that are more "in" at the moment)

success does equal good...

good marketing skills that is.

The wasnt for Tiesto, it was more so for the fact he stated its all about UNITY, yet he tells another community board and everyone associated to FUCK OFF. You gotta remember we have our share of cocksuckers on this board too.

Posted by DigDeep on Nov-11-2004 14:20:

Oh yeah - one more thing............

TIESTO SUCKS.
EOD.
