Angry israel re-arrests Vanunu

Israel re-arrests whistleblower Vanunu
By Peter Enav, AP
11 November 2004

Nuclear whistle blower Mordechai Vanunu was arrested today for allegedly revealing classified information, seven months after he completed an 18-year prison sentence for treason, police said.

Police spokesman Gil Kleiman said Vanunu was detained at his rented rooms in Jerusalem's St. George's church, but declined to discuss the nature of his alleged disclosures or to whom he made them.

"Vanunu was arrested late this morning," Kleiman said, adding that police removed papers and a computer from his rooms.

Vanunu, 49, was released from prison in April after 18 years, much of it in solitary confinement, for disclosing secrets he learned as a technician at the Israeli nuclear reactor in the southern town of Dimona in the 1980s.

He has acknowledged violating his release arrangement which barred him from meeting foreigners or discussing his work at Dimona, but said he had no more classified information to reveal.

Vanunu was convicted in 1988 for divulging information and pictures of the Dimona reactor. The details, published in London's Sunday Times, led experts to conclude that Israel has the world's sixth-largest stockpile of nuclear weapons, including hundreds of warheads.

Israel has followed a policy of nuclear ambiguity, neither confirming nor denying it has nuclear weapons.

Vanunu, a convert to Christianity, became a hero to peace activists for his role in unveiling Israel's nuclear program.

Peter Hounam, the Sunday Times journalist who published Vanunu's nuclear revelations, said he was "horrified" by Vanunu's arrest, and accused the Israeli authorities of using Thursday's death of Palestinian Leader Yasser Arafat to try to divert attention from it.

"I think they deliberately waited until Arafat died," he told The Associated Press from England. "But I don't think they will succeed because people all over the world will ask why Israel is being so vindictive."

In an AP interview in September, Vanunu said he wanted to replace his Israeli citizenship with a foreign one, perhaps Palestinian.

"In Israel, I am regarded as a traitor ... and since my release they are not respecting my human rights, my freedom of speech my freedom of movement," he said.

He said he planned to continue his anti-nuclear campaign, but he had no more secrets to reveal. "All I knew was published 18 years ago," he said.

Guess the guy is what they call "thick headed".

He's one of the slowest learners I've ever seen...

Actually, I don't care he is a zionist anyway. But on the other hand, I feel sorry for him, in a human way.
And now he knows how inhuman his zionists brothers are. It's just pathetic. Poor man.

Arabs and Muslims are far more inhumane: beheadings, etc.

Nice to know that you base your opinions on race or religion of people instead of their actual values. And if you haven't noticed, he's a christian.

LOl we didn't torture people in prison?
We didn't occupied a land?(IRAQ, PALESTINE, AFGHANISTAN EC)
And didn't started the WW1 WW2. What we all do is defend ourselves against this kind of agression.

Maybe he's one of those antisemitic jews from South Park. He's just about as pro-palestinian as an Israeli can get. But I suppose you consider a zionist to be everyone who agrees with the right of Israelis to have their own state. People like you are the sole reason why a lasting peace can't be achieved in middle east. Now I really hate to venture into Israel-Palestine conflicts, but I feel that I must say something here. Yes, Israeli state did take some land inhabited by mostly muslim population. What is important is that they did not occupy it by force, it was given to them by Britain. Secondly, the area was relatively sparsley populated and poor. Thirdly, the current palestinian areas were parts of Jordan and Egypt who lost them due to their own agression. The area taken by Israel is important only because muslim fundamentalists see it as a cradle of infidels. Hell, if Israel was given a chunk of land in the middle of Saudi Arabian desert with population density equal to 0, the reaction would be the same. The intifada causes severe harm to people of Palestine because it is blocking peace negotiations and formation of an independant palestinian state. On the other hand it destabilizes Israel and generates feelings of vengance throughout the region. The only people who benefit from the situation are Arafat and his cohorts. Well, only his cohorts now.

Oh come on, don't tell me that arabs never tortured people. Everyone did that, and many arab nations still do that.

You don't currently hold any lands occupied, but it's hardly correct to say that you never occupied a country.

Whatever. Christians and Jews never conquered Byzantine empire. They just defended themselves against the agression.

I must mention here, however, that muslims did cooperate with Hitler to prevent British plans of forming the state of Israel. So while you may have not started the war, you have certainly been on the side of the agressor.

ahh yes, the Arabs and Muslims are always the victims.

What about the invasion of Spain in the 700's? Not to mention the other invasions that occured after Muhammed's death all across North Africa, Persia, Arabia, and other places.

What about the Turkish invasions of the 13, 14, and 1500's?

What about the current invasion of Europe by Muslims?

What about 9/11?

Afghanistan and Iraq are occupied? US forces are there at the request of the governments.

The fact is, Christians are victims of Muslim brutality.

I will agree with you though on Palestine... it's time Israel got out of Gaza and the West Bank.
