Invisible Grin First Recorded Mix, would love feedback ...

Hey there, Just started recording myself last week, I've been dj'ing for almost 2 years. 1st year it was more of a hobby, but the within the last year, I've really put time and effort into it. There are mistakes in the mix, but I figured might as well get out there and do this, it'll be a good experience. Here's a mix I made, and I'd love some feedback from anyone. Whether good or bad, doesn't matter. The recording is not so great, but mind you I just started using this software last week, so I'm still learning. Enjoy the set, and thanks in advance for your input.

Here's the tracklist:

1. Holden & Thompson Nothing (93 returning mix)
2. Infusion Girls Can Be Cruel (Infusion sQed mix)
3. New Order Blue Monday (Rogue Audio mix)
4. Sam Sharp Deep
5. Randy Katana In Silence (Txitxarro mix)
6. Age of Love Age of Love (Marco V remix)
7. Lotstep Burma (Sasha Remix)
8. Jas Van Houten Heavens Gate
9. Mojado El Toro
10. Marcel Woods Static State
11. Marcel Woods Time is Running Out (Original Mix)
12. Tiesto Traffic
13. D:fuse Bodyshock (Threw this is at the last moment for a friend, thats why the mixing is off)

1st mix the phrasing is wrong. About 8 beats off. This is more preference but you mixed in little late too. Levels are ok.

2nd mix, the beats are off. Pretty abrupt mix. Levels are too loud on the incoming track. When mixed right, the mix sounded pretty good together.

3rd mix is abrupt as well but it mixed well together.

4rd mix is abrupt and the beats are off. Trance is all about timing. Try and have the mix take longer. If you notice what PVD does is, he mixes in 1 phrase before the climax ends and then blends the two tracks after that for another 2 phrases.

5th mix is shakey. The phrases are off, that's why you were left hanging after Age of Love's short breakdown. Got to know your records better.

6th mix: Good beatmatching here. The exiting track had a lot of highs and mids that conflicted with Burma. Maybe mix later in the track or kill the highs and mids.

7th mix. Phrasing problems again. Mixed in too early or late. Right in the middle of the phrase. Too fast a mix. The track didn't really go well with Burma.

Well, I stopped here. Hope you don't take it the wrong way but overall the mixing is pretty poor but that's ok because we've all been there. The biggest problems I see is your phrasing and beatmatching. I think a lot of your mixes were rushed because your beats weren't matched perfectly forcing you to kill the volume. Practice mid-mix adjusts with your pitch control. Phrasing... just make sure you mix in every 16 or 32 beats.

The first three tracks didn't really fit into the rest of your mix. I assume you were trying to build up but that's hard in a 74 minute mix.

Keep practicing.

I'm not trying to be a dick. How else can someone get better unless he know his mistakes? Look at Tiesto. Tiesto's friends need to tell it to him straight.

no way! scott that was some great advice for him, i am very tempted to send you one of my mixes now and have you school me on some shit. i mean what more could you ask for than a detailed description of what needs work on every single one of the mixes in your set.

scott you are the man, and if you dont mind, would you give one of mine a listen. even though you have heard me spin live before, if you be great to get some input of some specific things in my mixing.

Sure thing bro. Send it over.

I may even consider sending mine as well.

wow my boyfriend is great

Posted by 3xx3r7 on Nov-13-2004 02:58:

For some reason mixing in breakbeat is much easier than regular beat. Maybe it is just me.

Edit: Hmmm.. Mixing between Time is Running Out and Traffic is really short. Almost a crossfade job.

Mixes

1 - Slight double beat for about 8 beats. You fixed it nicely however.

2 - The phrasing is off on this one. "Requiem for a Dream" has 32 beat phrases and I think you were mixing for 16 beats.
Keys with audibly off.

3 - Abrupt mixing in of "Find" but only briefly.

4 - Worse mix of the set. The beatmatching was great but both tracks clashed with each other in more ways than one. The vocals, the keys, the elements of the tracks clashed. The mix sounded very cluttered.
Best thing to do is completely mix out as soon as possible and not try to fight it.

5 - Abrupt mixing in of "Colourless". The mix was short but it needed to be done because of the short break on "Colourless". I felt you could have waited longer before mixing in "Colourless".

6 - Good long mix into "The Hunt" but "Colourless" faded out really quickly at the end. Could have held Colourless for another 16 beats until that clap kicks in from "The Hunt". I liked the change in styles from melodic to deeper prog.

7 - Great mix. Nothing wrong with it except I heard your Windows events sounds firing in the background. Gotta mute all inputs but line-in

8 - Mix had tiny offbeats that most people wouldn't hear. Didn't like this track picked to go after the nice groove you had going. It's too dark compared to the airry vocals and melody of "The Novel". I can see why you pick it however. The CD is ending and you wanted to close it with a bang.

9 - Timing is off. Mix came in 3 or 4 beats after the phrase started.

10 - I felt the track picked didn't go well with the previous two tracks. Decent mix though.

Overall the recording levels are low. Try normalising with a wave editor like Sound Forge to -6dB.
Comparing the first few tracks to the last few tracks the volume gradually went louder. I should also say that individual mixes the volume levels were fine.
Your beatmatching, though not perfect, is usually on par.

I felt some of the tracks could be switched around for it flow more. You obviously have a good handle on beatmatching. You started out with some tribal, immediately mixed into melodic prog for a few tracks and then went to deep prog for the rest of the set. I felt you lost level of energy created in the earlier part of the mix. Flow is entirely subjective but I wanted to bring it up to your attention.

Things I feel you should work on is, matching keys and programming of the tracks for flow.

I don't remember meeting you. That was a hazy night but super fun. That's where I met Jack (Tranceluver4evr). But sure, link yours over.
