Help with Cubase Sx

Can anyone tell me how to create the common fading in and out effect on my breaks? dont mean the volume - i mean to make the sound "muffled" and then gradually coming clearer again.This is quite common in a lot of tracks. Ive tried automation but cant seem to find the right thing to get this effect.

Filter cutoff is the key. Either automate the cutoff of your synth if there is one, or get a filter VST.

Yeah, use a low pass filter as an insert in the insert fx channel. Filter VST is very good, but I'm sure you will be able to find a freebee. Use a bit of resonance to get the muffled sound to it and bring down the cutoff, then bring it back up to make it clear again.
