Motor

what would be better for the motor?

Motor Direct Drive: 16-pole, 3-phase?

or...

Motor Direct Drive: 8 Pole, 3 Phase?

Jesus christ dude, just buy some frigging turntables already

Posted by TranceSpeeder on Nov-13-2004 06:54:

i am fool, just wondering what this motor crap is.

Technics. one word to answer all your questions.

we are DJ's, not qualified electricians.

fuck those specs, you can judge which deck to get without having to know all that guff.

No, offcourse not, technics are th most modern turntables. They have soooo cool features, like a +\- 8 pitch! And oh my go, only 500!!

yes.

i have 2 vestax pdx2000's and 1 m5g, i prefer the vestax by a long shot, and they are 150 cheaper.

don't get me wrong, the technics decks are very nice decks, i just think they are over-priced and lacking in the fun department.

Posted by SUNWmsf on Nov-13-2004 21:07:

maybe 16-pole means you can pitch the record to +-16%?
maybe 8-pole means only +-8%?

i dont know about that pole party shit.

Posted by DannyO on Nov-13-2004 22:00:

Basically this is because he is on my MSN (I'm trying to help, doesn't seem to work) and he really seems like he wants to buy the 90s over the 100s, he seems to see them as having the same motor, cos there 2.2kg each, I told him there different inside as the poles and phases are different, so it is not the same motor, and now he wants to know what it all means, I did try telling him I can't see that Stanton are gonna release a lower model like the 90s, which are cheaper and of course have a lower model number, that are better than a set of there higher end decks the 100s.

I dunno, I give up.

just buy a pair of technics dude, jeff talks donkey willy.

325/deck for mk2s at www.decks.co.uk

You cant go wrong with technic 1200s also it would be good considering they are club standerd so thats one less thing you have to adapt to when djing in a club

Posted by auujay on Nov-14-2004 01:17:

Jesus Christ people.

16 pole is better than 8 pole, it means there are more poles (the magnets around the motor coils) around the moter giving it a more precise spin (pretty sure about that, though I am surprised no one else knew that...).

Just get some decent decks and be done with it.

Techs apparently have a 12 pole motor which would indicate to me that this is probobly not the most important spec to be looking at.

Posted by Quantized on Nov-14-2004 01:24:

yeh, 16 pole is better although you shouldnt really be lookin into this much detail when buyin TT's.

i built a 4 pole brushless ac motor in uni the other day, pretty cool to see how the inside of turntables work.

"what decks should i get, blah, blah, blah....."

and you are still wasting 50 on boring decks.

Thats similar to what I was gonna say, it took me a while to think back to yr 12 physics though!

The more poles (magnets) you have around the motor the more uniform the magnetic field will be, giving more precise control of the spindle (more accurate)

I would suggest its not important, theres a limit to how effective having nore and more poles is, there is probably not much difference between 16 or 12 poles, 12 would be close enough for it not to be much of a problem, the field is probably pretty close to uniform.

Physics isn't really my field, so please feel free to correct me.
