Powell resigns...

Colin Powell resigns
Further Cabinet resignations expected

Monday, November 15, 2004 Posted: 10:46 AM EST (1546 GMT)

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell has submitted his resignation to President Bush, the White House said on Monday.

Powell is the most prominent of four Cabinet officials whose resignations will be announced Monday, sources told CNN.

The others will be Agriculture Secretary Ann Veneman, Education Secretary Rod Paige and Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham, the sources said.

Powell told his senior staff that he planned to stay on until a replacement was confirmed, State Department officials said.

State Department officials told CNN that Bush and Powell decided mutually that it was time for him to go.

The officials said that Powell plans to keep working on a number of key issues, including North Korean nuclear talks, the Iraqi elections scheduled for January and Middle East peace process.

Powell was scheduled to travel to Egypt next week for a conference on Iraq.

A senior official said Monday that the State Department was trying to arrange a meeting between Powell and the new Palestinian leadership, but added the details have not been worked out. A date and place have not been set, the official said.

The official made the comment after Palestinian Foreign Minister Nabil Shaath told reporters in Gaza City that Powell was expected to meet with the leadership next week in the West Bank.

Rumors have swirled about Powell's role in a second Bush administration, but neither the president nor the secretary had spoken publicly about his future.

Last week, when asked if he wanted Powell to stay on to oversee the Mideast peace process Bush told reporters: "I'm proud of my secretary of state. He's done a heck of a good job."

Powell told reporters that he had had several conversations with the president, but would not comment on what they said.

Interesting....

Everyone has always bashed Powell about the whole Iraq issue while I've always said the guy was just doing his job, bringing the bacon home...I've always liked him as a politician he seemed better than most guys up there anyhow.

Good sign this is happening. Powell was incompetent as the US' chief diplomat. Its time to try a new boy in hopes that the Department of State will actually serve as some balance to the Department of War.

I'm curious who the nominees will be. Any guess?

Was expected, last year I remember him saying he didn't want to stick around for a second term.

It will be curious who Bush chooses, as Powell was more of an opposite of Bush.

I doubt the decision was mutual. Powell probably just said, "You know Bush, get someone else to do our dirty work." And then he decided to quit. Or Bush probably told him to resign since he needs a "better" cabinet to make it seem as if these next four years will be better with a stronger group. Either way, it wasn't mutual.

The man speaks Yiddish. He might as well take a lower paying job as a translator.

3 other cabinet positions are being vacated on top of the 3 already reported:

Agriculture Secretary Ann Veneman
Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham (disagreement with project drill alaska as the only solution to the energy crisis?)
Education Secretary Rod Paige (heard massive cuts are coming for education ...)

He can teach high school geology class in Israel.

He should be used to it. Being in front of a room of people pointing at a board that no one has a clue about.

Only this time teenagers can rip him a new one.

lots of army ppl study that.

but to stay on topic, colin powell was not on the same frequency with bush and bush knows that if colin ran for president, colin wouldve probably kicked his ass. Though i personally feel that colin had a straighter head than bush, its no good to have staff members that feel differently about certain issues.

yeah. they study geology and when they realize there's 2 geology jobs in the whole USofA they turn to the Army.

my buddy graduated with an undergrad geology degree. lucky for him, he's been at a major grocery food chain since he was 16 and made his way up the ranks to being 3rd in charge and making $45k+ /yr.

back to topic...

this resignation was expected for a while now, and nothing i'm suprised at. i think Time did a story on possible replacements, but i can't remember who was being considered for the job.

Colin Powell speaks fluent Yiddish. He has since he was a boy in my hometown of the Bronx, New York.
