No problem mate...
I'm happy to host. Need to get some traffic going on there.
I'm not paying for the bandwidth just to be..

I'm enjoying this. Even though I'm not much a techno listener..

I'll grab this one later, I need some sleep...

Because you have been so friendly as to spam my PM inbox with the announcement that a mix of yours was coming up, I have taken the liberty to download and listen to it

On the positive side
First of all, I like the style of the mix.. You have already told you were into techno and acid, and this is really reflected in the mix. I was a bit afraid at first that it would be an all-out harder acid techno mix, before I saw the tracklist. Turns out there were some very nice techno tracks in there with subtle acid influences, and that's exactly the way I like the acid part to be included, not all over the place, but in a subtle way.

The flow of the mix is good, it keeps you interested (maybe too because it's relatively short) and tracks are not played for too long, neither are they played too short. You've got that part covered.

On the negative side
The beatmatching is quite rough at points in the mix. A little too often you can tell very clearly that the two tracks are off, something which is quite annoying to me when I listen to a mix.

Also, I've noticed that the gain levels of the tracks are not always the same. Especially later on in the mix, tracks are played somewhat quieter than others. Something which also definitely needs attention.

Overall
A nice mix to listen to, especially the style of music, you've got the somewhat harder parts (flow, track selection, mixing points in tracks) covered pretty good, now go work on that beatmatching With a bit of practice, you should have it covered soon enough. And when you do, I'll be gladly listening to your next mix.

The general structuring of the set is nice, it works in the way you've done it. I would agree with basd about the beat matching, it's a bit shady at times, and when mixing styles such as these you need to be spot on to get things to work perfectly.

Echoing his sentiments again, I think it's subtle with the acid influences and about the right amount of it involved.

The main gripe would be the beatmatching but that just comes with experience and practice and not overnight, which would be why I'd ask you to keep on trying, don't put too much pressure on yourself and you will come good though

mmmm

i'll def. be checking this out...im hoping to make a techno mix soon enough too ehe, we need some variety round here

Posted by Fast Turtle on Nov-16-2004 14:59:

As said before, your beat matching need some work. Techno is something where this is very important. Be careful about thinking you have everything right and just tossing up the fader to get it starting on time with the other track, I used to do this a lot. It's almost always better to get a slowly faded in on time track than to have one trainwrecking quickly and needing to be corrected quickly.

A good thing to do (though some people think this is cheating) is to write down the BPM of your tracks. The track you are mixing into is usually about +/- (.7*difference of BPM)%. Once you get used to it, you can guess the rough percentage of the speed of the incoming track, and save yourself a good 5-10 seconds of bouncing around trying to find that point.

Track selection is good, stuck kind of right between acid house and techno, at a housier tempo. It'd probably make for a good earlier on set.

I was thinking the same thing. It's a good set, with some nice tracks and it's got a very housey feel to it too. I usually like my techno a little faster, but it definately makes a good starter set.

I didn't really notice too many beatmatching errors, but then again, no-ones perfect. It's nothing you wouldn't get in a typical PvD set anyways.

All in all, good stuff.

dling now mate, i'll let u know my thoughts

Posted by Steven Hays on Nov-17-2004 14:14:

Well, can't say much that everyone else hasn't already. I just think that maybe many of the mixes were rushed. It seemed like you brought in a song too early at times. All in all a cool mix of techno, a genre I haven't listened to in a while.

thanks for the reviews people.
catching the vibe i wanted was much more important to me then the beatmixing, as far as the beatmixing goes, i was just having some fun.

usually my recordings at home come off rather choppy on the beatmixes
but when im at a club i dont have any problems at all, i wonder why that is.

hi mate, well you certainly caught the vibe! i thought the track selection was great, particularly in the 2nd half of the set. as people have already said, the beatmatching is a little dicey at times, but its not something that ruins the set IMO, i have heard a lot worse out in clubs! some cracking tunes in there tho and thats what made the set for me. its a nice kind of chilled (ish) rolling vibe, with energy injected where its needed.

my only problem with the set is the fact that you mixed out of new time new place way too early in my books

definitely practice the beatmatching, i find its best not to bother with a set in order to practice the beatmatching to make sure you concentrate on it. just have one record playing and another beatmatching, and keep at it until you have it as perfect as it will get, leave it in for 1 minute, then get another record out and beatmatch it etc etc, all to the same record. it might get a bit tedious listening to the same record over and over but i find that it works

anyways, your aim with the set has definitely been fulfilled, i loved the vibe

on a side note, you mentioned you find it easier in a club? i usually find that the louder the music the easier it is.

aight. checked it out yesterday, and was surprised it was a pretty short mix. you should at least bang out 60mins.

as for the mix, i thought the tracks you chosed were great. i liked all the tracks on it.. but thought the order you played them could have been different.. it starts out hard, then mellows out and then picks up again.. but for a short mix like this, i thought it was unnecessary.. i'd rather hear a constant relentless flow of techno if its around 40mins long. lastly, the mixing was soemtimes dodgy but it didnt damage the set too bad like tiesto.. lol good work.

Posted by Haak on Nov-21-2004 13:30:

awesome mix
like all of the tracks, some really wicked ones i hadn't heard before, good job

Posted by dj_lane on Nov-22-2004 00:45:

Nice vibe to this set, some of those hertz tracks IMO didnt fit well, but the rest was what you were after, acid housey feel, it flowed fairly well, I enjoyed it very much. keep up the good techno.

(btw... do you produce? im working on a few techno tracks, we could collab)

After your shameless plugging + feedback from other TAs, I decided to check your mix. I was pleasantly surprised when I saw the tracklist, as I very rarely bother to listen to techno mixes at home (listening to 30 tools at home just doesn't give me anything). This however, is a great mix to listen to at home, thanks to the rapid mixing and solid, varied tunes. Well done! Now you should just work on your mixing, or just be arsed to do the mixes properly next time.
