How do you get good at listening to trance?

The topic sounds funny im sure but its a serious question. How do you get good at listening to trance how do you know what all is new how do you know what to listen to who is good where to look where to buy do you gotta be a dj? I must admit a dj is appealing to me but im too lazy to start so i just want to enjoy my trance but its hard when im ignorant about what all is good and what all is new. Tips? anyone?

Just go through the motions, first listen to some cheese, breakdown buildup trance, then start to listen to some hard trance, then some goa or phy, and maybe some prgressive. You have to have your own opinion, no one is good at listening to trance.

That's what's so good about trance. You can pick up anything in the song and listen to many different levels without some lead singer guiding you.

Check out the Reviews/New Releases forum, listen to online radio shows & mix albums and check out the artists who produced your favorite tracks, see who your favorite DJs/prodcuers have colaborated with.

Like the OurManFlint said you need search on your own. Go through all of the genres and figure out which genre you are emotionally attached to the most.

In terms of DJing you can like several different genres and be able to mix them together as long as they are related to each other somewhat. Say you like house and progressive trance, both can be combines, you can throw down some house, prog house, prog trance, and if you want to some full on trance trance as well. It takes skills to mix cross genres but it can be done if you so desire.

Just figure out the styles of music you like within EDM and go from there. Be your own guide. No one can tell you what you will like or won't u need to search on your own, just ask questions along the way if you need assitance.

I Totally agree. Give songs that others recommend a listen and decide for yourself if you like it. There are a lot of politics involved in music, but I say don't like or dislike something just because others do.

you may want to check out the > Beginner's Guide To Trance < thread.

and listen to the music

How to listen to trance good:
Step 1: Take your shoes off
Step 2: Grab your right foot with your left hand
Step 3: Place your left leg behind your head
Step 4: Pick up a monkey wrench with your right hand
Step 5: Strike your head with the monkey wrench repeatedly until you black out

Repeat steps 5 until you can't remember your own name or you no longer care whether you're good at listening to music, whichever comes first.

thats the way i went about it. works great!

seriously though, the best way to go about it, is to try and find some of the stuff thats talked about on these forums. some you will think is amazing, some you will think is crap. this will develop your own taste and you will eventually find certain artists or certain dj's who you like.

have a look in the amateur dj's section of the website and grab some of the sets in there (and leave feedback please), livesets are probably the best way to tailor your taste, its the way the music should be listened to

I go on google and type in "Rave music" and whatever comes up i listen to.

I definitley picked the wrong subject for this thread. I meant not HOW to listen to it im aware that everyone has thier own taste i just mean like people here seem to know all the new stuff thats out at all times from all the latests artists and im wondering how. I suppose its this board? i dunno. thanks for the replies though.

Basically here it sounds like your asking how to listen to trance and be able to break it down in such a way as to know a good track from a formulaic cheese-fest?

but here it seems like you're asking WHERE we get all the new tracks?

Posted by Special_K on Nov-17-2004 10:26:

Ok seriously....

I DJ so i try to keep as up to date as i can. I use loads of diffrent message boards, Look at DJ live set tracklists, Look at the new releases of at least 6 diffrent online shops, I have at Countless label's homepages bookmarked, Magazines....both online and in print. I got my favorite Record shop in Vancouver sending me their pre-release list that i order off of all the time. I also have tons of friends that are really into house music or spin it so we pool our resources.

tharts just off the top of my head....ill post more detail if you want but i got to get to sleep.

Some of you need to learn to read, its pretty clear that hes asking how to find info and such. I mean he could of worded it better but come on.

Yeah i had to read between the lines of his first and second post... the second post is a little bit more opaque about his query.

Posted by scrut on Nov-17-2004 10:50:

special k pretty much said it, you all make it look so easy but i knew there was work involved.

Posted by Mebot on Nov-17-2004 10:54:

But the people who posted pretty much told you what you needed to know. READ the threads on this forum. Go to other trance sites and read forums there..

Thats pretty much the only way to find out about artists and increase your knowledge about trance music. Well actually there are other ways, but this is probably the easiest..

Posted by tu_face on Nov-17-2004 11:15:

the best way to find out whats new and stuff, is as special k said, look at record shops, and labels websites to see whats up and coming, again, livesets from proffesional dj's are great for hearing new stuff.

if you are in a club, you hear something new, ask the dj what it is. i do it all the time and i nearly always get an answer (unless its some unknown white label thing ). i usually write it in my phone because if i am spannered i won't remember

Just listen, and listen and listen... It will take some time, but in the end...you will realise you have been listening to the greatest stuff ever, all that time!

Posted by miamitranceman on Nov-17-2004 23:16:

First real mix I ever listened to was Paul Oakenfold's classic "Home at Space" mix from the '99 Essential Mix World Tour. I was hooked from that point on so I'd definitely recommend it!
