Review: Scumfrog @ The Zone

How was it guys?

Do to an unfortunate event that took place 5 mins before I was about to walk in, I couldn't make it.

So how was it?

Posted by j_spot on Nov-21-2004 20:23:

just got home.
it was fun
for my first trip to CoZo, it wasnt nearly as sketchy as I thought.
the floor debris was a lil nasty(towels and gum all over the place)
But I thought the crowd was no worse than any other club Ive been to.

also, this might have just been me, but vibe man. I felt like I could have walked up to nearly anybody and takled to them.

Scummie ripped it up.
my knees and will are shattered, I am a pile of mush.
The idea of getting up, eatin gnad oging to the club is so foreign, yet worked so well.

I had such a good time there, I might just do that(wake, go party) again.
maybe the crowd was just less sketchy cause of scumfrog.

sounds cool...yeh, i think that way is cool to...the ppl that go to guvernment or any other place til like 6am, and then go to comfort zone til 2pm. thats just nuts. i don't know where you find the energy. I'm usually able to party til about 5am tops most nites...only later if the dj is dropping the best ever beats, and i didn't work a long day. i wouldn't mind trying the wake up and go to a club haha, your ears are freshest first thing in the morning!

^ cudos to anyone who can do that (especially without drugs) becuase i'd love to be able to have the energy to endure a whole nite from 11-10am...but by 5am my body just gives out sucks. only on really good dj sets can i stay later. Scumfrog kicked ass at guvy awhile back...if he played anything like he did there, i'm sure you guys would all of had a good time!!!

perhaps age is catching up on us. but for fucksakes i'm only 19. i am suppose to have a long way to go!

but caffeine helps a lot most of the times

Posted by DigiNut on Nov-21-2004 22:36:

Seemed pretty sketchy to me, not the point of pissing my pants in fear but the people outside a 6-foot radius of the DJ booth were pretty fucked up, and car wash crew was in full force.

Not that I'm complaining, I had a pretty good time. Scumfrog definitely tore it up, although there weren't many (any?) of his old-school tracks - which is good in this case, because the tunes he picked were *perfectly* adapted to the whole CoZo vibe, at least from what I experienced of it.

Definitely a nice change of pace to be wide awake *and* sober, haha. Might actually be fun to do again if there's nothing to do on the Saturday before.

The rumours are obviously exaggerated and I knew that long before going, but I'm still pretty glad that my friends were there.

P.S. FUCKING BULLSHIT taking me 2 hours to get home in the fucking parade traffic! If Santa Claus were a real person I'd gut him!

Posted by StereoPrincess on Nov-21-2004 23:14:

most of us that went only went to this party we didn't go out the night before but woke up in the morning and went to this, so there was no energy issues.

Thank you Scumfrog, what an amazing morning set. Once my eyes got used to the darkness, I stayed on the dancefloor the entire time since that seemed to be the sanest place of all.

Posted by Skipper on Nov-21-2004 23:21:

a couple weeks ago I went to Arc for an after party and thought it was way too sketchy. from this, I concluded I am not hardcore enough for the zone even if I do what all of you guys did and went after a full nights sleep.

Kudos to you guys going sober. I'm not sure whether that would make my feeling about the place better or worse! (but goddammit I would love to play there)

I don't get it - you say it's too sketchy for you and then proceed to say you'd love to play there? Sheesh I hope I'm just misinterpreting because that sounded pretty arrogant.

I should clarify what I meant about the sketch issue. There's definitely plenty of sketch if you look for it, but I actually found it more pleasant than the Guv because in general, the sketchpads seem to keep to themselves, and for the most part, people gave me my dancing space when I needed it. You'd have to be pretty hardcore to go there by yourself every week (you know who you are ), but it's as fun as any other club as long as you're with a decent group.

- P.S.: Black lights dramatically increase the visibility of dandruff. Yick.

but then who would bring you toys on christmas!

Posted by QryS on Nov-21-2004 23:34:

This was my first time to Zone utterly and completely awake, sober and drug-free. And I didn't find it scary at all! Though I was a little disturbed whenever a shirtless guy walked by and there was skin to sweaty skin contact...

And it was only $20 in-out! What a deal! I was afraid that they would jack up the price because of the guest DJ.

The Scumfrog was awesome! It was nothing but positive energy on the floor. (Didn't go near the sketchy seats, but I'm sure everyone was having a good time one way or another.)

Would have stayed longer after if Deko-Ze had followed him like it said on the flyer. But went to the gym for an after-club workout instead.

I  CZ

I had the most aggravating taxi ride home, completely nuts with the traffic detours. The most amazing time though, despite the dubious nature of the surroundings. The people I shared the night with made the experience. Thanks!

Good times

Scumfrog threw a set that was definately comfort-zone tailored. Hard, dirty, and fun. Great energy throughout from the crowd and Scumfrog himself. It was also great to have such a contingent of TA's there, made the Zone all that much better!

Oh dear lord, how much did it end up costing you!?

Posted by MarkT on Nov-22-2004 02:04:

Comfort Zone is a shithole...I really can't say I'm dying to go back...although it certainly was cool to hang out with a few TAs for a while and meet a few people

While the place was pretty damn creepy, it wasn't as "bad" as I thought it would be...the sketchpads tended to keep to themselves, so whatever. The sound system wasn't exactly breathtaking either, lol.

Having a relatively big group was a good idea...I wouldn't feel comfortable at all showing up alone or with just one or two other people.

I was at another place drinking all night...then met up with some of the crew and a few other TAs at Ray and Margaret's (thanks for having us...and you guys have a *really* nice place, btw!).

I guess we got there around 9 and I left by 10:30...Addy was spinning some good stuff...by the time Scumfrog came on, I had sobered up WAY too much to be there...and the washroom was even too sketchy to catch up to the rest of the people in that place, lol...so I decided to bail about a half hour into his set.

I guess if it wasn't that busy...and with sufficient pharmaceutical preparation...and not having already been out all night...I'd have stuck around longer.

The conversations on the patio were hillarious (blow dart hunting! )...at first I wondered what the hell people would think if they overhead us...then I looked around and saw who else was out there

While it's not as bad as I expected...it's still a dump. I almost can't believe some people go there every week...but having seen who much of the clientele is, I guess it's not that surprising, lol

looking forward to Zabiela...and I will never complain about Guv or System getting too dirty ever again

We went out last night to Roger S for a bit, but ended up leaving early, which was fine by me, as I knew I could use the sleep. Got about 4+ hrs, then headed to the Zone. Was reeeeally fearing what was in store after meeting the sketchiest person ever in the past 4 yrs, standing in line at coat check (this guy could barely stand, reeked of booze, obviously on something, and insisted he knew me), but once I scurried my way thru the hot, steamy dance floor and found the TA's, all was good from there on.

Nice to see that all the heavily stained beige cloth couches and chairs from 4 yrs ago have been replaced by easy to clean plastic lawn furniture. Aside from 1 trip to the bar & to the bathroom (after holding it til I knew I could fight it no more), I didn't really wander around. Noticed that the same old corner was filled with k-holed Asians sitting down, but i didn't venture back into the old 'stripper & Gino' section in the back, tho I did try to take a peek on the way out, knowing I may not be back for another few yrs. Safe to say, I didn't see anyone resembling a stripper. Maybe the place has improved.... maybe.

Had to say tho that the crowd here was giving the most positive feedback towards the Scumfrog's set, in comparison to past shows. His music was definitely well suited for this crowd. Really glad to see people having a blast on the dance floor, jumping around. People also made sure to keep the plastic frog I brought remained propped up for all to see by his equipment. Marg & I took turns wearing the Kermit head, tho she gets an A+ for modifying it into a hat, ideal for those hot conditions.

Only 1 use of the microphone, and some use of the drum pad.

Tunes included:
Scumfrog "Come On" (? remix)
Eurythmics "Sweet Dreams" (? remix)
Amiel "Love Song" (Scumfrog Mix)
Filterheads "Yimanya"
mystery song that sampled "Betty Davis Eyes" (TUNE!!!)

Shout outs to Mike, Jenna, Graham, RJ, Ray, Margaret, Chris "amb_", Dan & MarkT (where were you guys all morning??), Chris "Obe", Jason, Aron, Aaron, Jennypie (Happy birthday!), Sam & Lauren (happy annniversary!), Angelique & Jesse (of course).

Sadly, by the time we got out of there, a migraine was setting in from having missed breakfast. Had a nice lunch at the Red Room, but I was really getting ill. That freakin Santa Claus parade traffice mess just absolutely KILLED all previous happiness from just moments earlier. TWO FUCKIN HOURS TO DRIVE HOME a normal 10 min journey!!!!!! FUCK YOU SANTA & THE SLEIGH YOU RODE IN ON! I have NEVER seen such a traffic nightmare ever!!!! Who the hell approved closing off ALL those major roadways, dividing the city in 1/2, from Bloor to Front??? That was diabolical!! After 1 hr in the car, we were right back at the Zone. I was THAT ready to check into the Waverly Hotel to wait it out. An hour later, finally reached the Gardiner & scooted home, only to finally puke upon arrival, the migraine had gotten that bad. At least I felt a bit better after that. I could SUE the city for all that aggravation so that 50,000 people could watch some dumb parade. Gay Pride & Caribana attract a million people each year, and the traffic impact is minimal. (Waits for JayX1 to back me on this).

Posted by tatgirl on Nov-22-2004 02:47:

Oh, and big thanks to Addy and Schryer for returning my work camera bag to me, which I had stupidly left on the sidewalk in front of the club. I had the camera on my shoulder, but I woulda lost all the batteries, which woulda been bad.

Posted by DigiNut on Nov-22-2004 02:58:

Damnit, I always seem to miss you Mark, all these parties and I have yet to meet you.

That parade shit is seriously awful. For every million that it brought in for tourism today it probably cost billions in productivity. Yes folks, some people do work on Sundays - I personally had intended to get some done at home but ended up getting nothing done due to all the wasted time and personal aggravation. This idiotic Mayor of ours seems to have a vendetta against cars and motorists, with almost every major street being torn up for the past few months and now with half the city blocked off for this stupid event. Somebody needs to beat some sense into this shit-for-brains; fucking up the traffic conditions hurts EVERYONE - motorists, residents, AND the environment.

I think it was just over $30 for what should have been $10, LMAO (we all kicked in money out of shear sympathy for what must have been quite the sketchy ride back, lol). We would keep calling..."where the f**k are you? you called and said you got in a cab 30 minutes ago!"

DigiNut...one of these days! Zabiela?
