Oakenfold Signs to Maverick

PAUL OAKENFOLD has cemented his working relationship with MADONNA by signing to her record label, MAVERICK.

The veteran DJ, who recently remixed Madonna's single 'What It Feels Like For A Girl', will release his debut album as a solo artist next year via Maverick in the US. The album will be released via Mushroom worldwide.

Speaking about the signing, Madonna said: "Paul's instinct and talent are undeniable. I couldn't be happier having him join the Maverick family. He's a perfect fit".

As previously reported, Oakenfold has been working on his solo album in between DJ commitments. He has recently collaborated on a track with Crazy Town vocalist Shifty Shellshock.

Oh my good, god! This Maverick think isnt all that surprising or even interesting, but Crazy Town? Now I am really wondering if Paul is losing it. He's been on a downward slope for awhile now, not that he necessarily sucks, but this could completely kill any further hope I have for the man. Props to BT, I would never question his talent or drive even after doing nysnc and britney(huh huh uhh). But Oakie and some retard from Crazy Town? The only reason they hooked up is cause of that catchy shit, pop song. And I don't see a hard rock Oakenfold developing into anything...anyone else? I thot not...Crazy Town definitely didnt get popular doing hard rock...late/

Thumbs down

I love Oakie's remix of what it feels like but I've lost respect for my idol Madonna.

heres a little topic of debate
while its obvious that he changes his styles so often

this summer, he has played more uplifting trance comparable to tiesto, avb etc. Do you think he is being copied by Tiesto and others by playing this style or is he jumping on the "uplifting" bandwagon and playing crowd favorites that other djs play

when i saw him in july, he played das glockenspiel, insigma open our eyes, urban train, flight 643, jan johnson - flesh.......it sounded so much like a tiesto set

what do u think?

jump on the uplifting bandwagon?!?! first of all, Paul has been off, then back on, then back off more times then Jenna Jameson has been screwed (literally!) ! back in 98/99 he was at his prime (imo) when his style was mainly epic/uplifting....and now, hes just 'trying' to look unique and different, and trying wayyyyy to hard.
i thought he would make a comeback after his recent cd 'ibiza' (well, kinda)...but now, sheesh!

so about this maverick thing: ive lost alllllllllll respect for oakie.

Posted by delstar on Oct-17-2001 04:53:

i agree...but do u think he is copying tiesto and others who are getting more popular than ever before...mainly because of their styles

look at the top 25 of the top 100 djs......count how many are uplifting trance djs.....i think tiesto is 22...and maybe scott bond is up there....so many progessive djs that its starting to get a bit stale......while many will disagree with me....its totally cool, its the way i see it

I think that it's good that the guy tries new styles! If you don't test your ability then you can't go further... sometimes you have to take some chances...
I don't see it as he is copying others...he is learning from others!
The guy really knows what he is doing! Go Oakie!!!

Posted by I Cant Focus on Oct-17-2001 17:56:

I think Tiesto is copying Oaky more than vice versa. Tiesto has recently been playing a lot of old material that Oaky played in the past. While I still think Tiesto is a fantastic DJ, I fear that he's about to start travelling on the same road as Oaky.

Posted by delstar on Oct-17-2001 19:36:

thats what i was curious to see.....i wouldnt be surprised in 2-3 years that tiesto will be in the top 5 and because so big in the mainstream industry because of his remixing talent

Well he actually just released one about a month ago...but if it needs to be from madonnas label, then wait i guess.

I think its more of a Oakey, and then Tiesto thing. I wont say that either 'copies' tho. Check Oakies Travelling and Another World discs and then Tiestos Club Eau live set from 6.3.2001. The songs are definitely similar, but Oakey dropped them first. Tiesto has always said that one of his idols is Oakey, so some might say copy, while others inspired.

I dont know how anyone can say they lost respect for madonna or oakenfold for this move. Oakey has always wanted to hit it big in the US and this could be a way. Plus its just 2 multimillionaires(billionaires?) finding a good way to make more money. This is almost non-news, just another business switch in the music industry, and no matter the musical styles involved, or the people for that matter, everyone knows - especially TAs - that the music business is just about one thing> skrilla. late/

I don't hink you understand this....He just released a mix CD.....That is not a what he will do for maverick....This record will be all tracks produced by him and Andgy Grey probably.....All new stuff......This album will put trance on the mainsstream in the states......

Now can we all agree that Oakenfold is a sell out?
He has sucked for some time now...
his projects always suck.
Too predictable Paul.

Ok, ok, but I don't think that if Paul made an actual trance album, that it would put it on the mainstream simply because Madonnas label is behind it. The US is fickle, they like pop, they like words, they like hot chicks/guys, they like rock/hip hop hybrids(note: check the Crazy Town rumor^^). Now if Oakey made a straight trance album, it could have all of these things, but most likely it would have these things + being dumbed down. I really think the US will eventually 'get' trance, or at least most electronic music, but I don't think one cd will change everything in one day. Has that ever happened? Did one cd make every white kid listen to hip hop? No, and trance wouldn't be the same. Plus anything related to Madonna drips of that sickly sweet goo, pop. And pop does not make 'real' trance. Do you consider Dj Jean - The Launch 'real' trance; how about Zombie Nation - Kernkraft400? Maybe a very long time ago, cause those songs have trance elements and are actually more popular than you would think in the US, but trance still hasn't broke here...and I doubt that it will for years still...late/

Yeah there was a time when I was an Oakie fan no doubt. Now I take everything bearing his name with a grain of salt. I won't blindly purchase his CDs or whatever, without first listening to them. But I also won't choose to say he sucks without letting him have a chance, we all know he can pull of some amazing things, not that he has in a while or anything... late/

First of all Maverick isn't a cheesy label. Secondly Oakenjoke has already commericalized trance...how many cds did he release this year? 4? There are still commericals for Tranceport.

I bet Madonna loves his remix of what it feels like, as do I but he has lost his passion, all he cares bout is the $.

When I saw him at the Pefecto closing party at Pacha, Ibiza he was suprisingly not as uplifting as I expected. He was trying to be progressive/tribal...it was boring.

well ok, here we go again...no offense, and no ill wil, i hope TG, but it seems that we are forever destined to argue over the big PO.
Maverick being cheesy or not doesnt really matter cause who, honestly, in the US chooses music thru a label? when i say 'pop' i just mean that it isnt underground, and if it aint underground, then there is some cheese associated with it.
Oakenfold has commercialized trance here due to his popularity and skill(circa 1997). Tranceport is still being advertised cause 95% on the US doesnt have the faintest idea how music can be classified as trance, plus its a DAMN good cd.
I never said Oakie isnt in it for the money anymore, we all know he digs the skrilla, but he still has that little grain of talent floating around in his bizarre shaped head, and it occasionally shows itself.
As for progressive/tribal, Oakie has always been a little of both, even if he was uplifting back in the day. He has NEVER been a straight uplifting DJ like Micro or the like, and some of his biggest tunes were tribal(brainbug - nightmare). Just cause you saw him and he was boring, doesnt mean that its because hes spinning these genres. I have seen deep dish and they are genius, but honestly what they spun was BORING!! My last comment is that I have heard people say that Oakenfold always seems to know what will be big next...i think this is in a way true, even if he isnt as 'uplifting' as we would all like him to be...late/

this is a sad, sad day...

Well good on him I say ... even if he ends up selling out and making a shit cheese trance-lite album to cash in 'Stateside, the man's done probably more for trance over the years than any other person alive and he deserves his big corporate payout. That Lotherton hall Gatecrasher set of his, is without a doubt the greatest hour of trance ever spun, I have listened to it hundreds and hundreds of times and it still makes my knees go weak

I haven't been that impressed with his recent sets but on the other hand I think Tiesto's been going downhill ever since Flight 643 so who cares which one's copying the other? The trance-innovator label has long ago left either of those two and been passed to newer, better producers like Dumonde.

Besides ... it might be all a smoke screen ... imagine if his master plan is to make a crap Britney-pop-trance album and get a few hundred thousand MTV teeny boppers along to his big fuck off stadium show, lock the doors to keep em all inside and then spin a 3 or 4 hour classic super uplifting set circa '99 ... kids minds would be BLOWN!! ... the impending USA trance revolution would be well and truly started How fuckin cool would that be??
