yeah only the Taliban could control that.

Yah for the second biggest economy in the world! drugs|

If the only news coming out of Afghanistan is that we're losing the war on drugs there, than I would say that that is pretty good news overall.

Heard some UN workers were kidnapped and released ... other than that, nada.

yeah thats fine...it sounds about the same as before we invaded. nothing the western hemi cares to listen to|

it sure as hell isn't the same place before we invaded.

an idea i've heard regarding opium production is the U.S. and the U.K. buying the entire next year's poppy harvest with an agreement that the farmers plow a new crop, such as sugar cane or wheat or any combination of similar crops, to establish an exclusive market from which we purchase at similar prices. in other words, buying cane or corn or olives for twice the market value for the greater benefit of the Afghans and the world's addicts.

couldn't hurt to try.

Now if only we can not care about what happens in Iraq ...

I like how the people of Afghanistan see no harm in growing poppies, they won't touch the stuff but happily grow it because as they say, "It kills infidels." Gotta love em. They make some of the best hash in the world though however they don't allow their women to partake in the toking.

Posted by Q5echo on Nov-24-2004 05:53:

not me. i'm just saying no news is good news...maybe next week will be different.

Elections were prior to the US elections. Karzi is in power, no clue when next elections are going to be held.

They are basically soveriegn.

Afghanistan is doing relatively ok these days. It's not quite a country that's satisfying EU standards, but at least it's comparable to other *stan countries from the region. It generally does show signs of improvement, and it not being in the news is a pretty good thing. Except for the drug part. But hopefully that will sort itself out soon. It's one of those US invasions that really did fulfill expectations.
