only one way to do that..... devalue the dollar.

Posted by tatgirl on Nov-24-2004 23:29:

Nah, there are other ways too. Some film studios are still offering prices at the .65 cents to the US dollar rate, they are that desperate. As it is, the city of Hamilton is giving better tax breaks that Toronto, so the business is going there.

This makes no sense. A strong dollar helps Canadian film because it becomes a lot cheaper for US companies to produce in Canada.

I'm torn because on one hand I love films made in Canada, but I would also like to see more movies made in New York City. It's ridiculously expensive to film here.

Other way around, as the CDN gains on the USD, the USD doesn't go as far in Canada as it use to. Therefore, it's costing more money to come to Canada than it was before since the USD only gets you $1.18CDN vs. ~ $1.30

NY is still ranked #2 for most filming productions, so it's not like NY is starving. Look at all the TV series alone.

As a cinematographer what I find worrying is that besides all the anti - canada sentiment thats going around in the film industry with regards to US films being shot up here.. there is in fact an anti-toronto sentiment within Canada itself. So places like vancouver and calgary (yes... calgary) are actually getting more of the productions their way... be it television or movies or whatever.
There still seems to be a firm commercial base here though.

But advertising hasn't bounced back to the way it was pre- 9/11 or SARS.

True. Although Commercials is the one sector that actually shows some promise of coming back to the way it was, more so than the bigger features IMO. Commercials seem to be more of a staple diet for Ontario's economy than the big budget features. Features seem to be alot more volatile in that sense.

now aside from all the dollar discussion .... I do have to work that day or else maybe i would do it - but i would REALLY do it if the Toronto Film industry would give me a job!

************
. . . . . I used to work in the film industry - fun stuff i suppose....

Toronto will always have productions going on here - hence we are called Hollywood North...I don't think there is anything for Toronto to really worry about - Just as long as the American Production companies keep coming here and are allowed to continue film shoots here.

BTW are Rally's legal anyways? just by attending this rally would this actually raise money - or just awareness? anyways... I am still looking for a job in the industry.. but now i see they have problems and i suppose i will NEVER find one

p.s half this website is "Under Construction"

xx

But the American productions are NOT coming up here as of late, which is why there is a crisis.
