Read This! A little pet peeve.

Every thread I've read today and yesterday has had someone spell their/there/they're wrong. I hate that. I thought about putting them all in quotes here so you would know how I cringe every time I read it but I didn't want to call out specific people because everyone does it at one point or another. So we're going to have a lesson.

there - in or at that place, point or stage.
(There is where you made that spelling error.)

their - the possesive of "they."
(It's not their fault they cannot spell, they just never learned properly.)

which brings me to the last one,

they're - the conjunction form of "they are."
(They're going to learn how to spell if it kills them.)

Next time: your and you're, its and it's, and there is no "a" in definitely!

Honestly, if someone here didn't know that... well, I can think of many creative ways to rid the matter.

Very important I agree.

I also forgot to mention that I am aware that English might not be everyones first lanuage on this site, which is another reason why I didnt quote people...

I tend to not use apostrophes in online type. Its my own little online rule, plus I have short fingers and its hard for my little pinky to reach that key all the way over there!

Theres nothing with our written language.

DEFINITELY!

Ok...I will admit that this is one of my biggest pet peeves!

People will spell definite correctly yet somehow determine that an "a" mysteriously appears when an "ly" is applied to the end. I'm still trying to figure out the reasoning on that one.

Posted by Cloudburst on Nov-25-2004 10:19:

From what I've seen it's usually people from english speaking countries that spell these things wrong...
