1500 bucks, spend it for me

I have 1500 US dollars to spend and I am a wannabe dj. I have nice headphones and speakers. If you could, tell me everything I need to start mixing, and what I should spend it on. Thanks a lot

And a Vestax PCV 275

Its not bad, I know DannyO got 1 of his tables for 375Cdn... but that was an MK2, but it did have a Ortofon needle...

But yea. not a bad deal.. if it stays at that price.

Posted by djRocket on Nov-30-2004 03:41:

m5g's are a lot better than mk2's though aren't they?

Not exactly... just a different model number and few small differences... Like the Blue LED's 16% pitch... no 0 notch, slightly improved tonearm (?? someone correct me if I'm wrong)..

Not enough to warrent the extra cost on them,.

Posted by on Nov-30-2004 03:45:

And with regards to my post about that ebay.. I didn't realize it was for TWO M5G's... so yes.. that is a fucking wicked deal...

Actually that one was 325Cdn with an Ortofon Concorde Scratch, with 2 extra styli, and it was all in mint condition.

But like J:\ said, get yourself some used Techs and good needles, then either the PCV-275, or with the spare money you could go higher, or spend the extra on records or an effects pad, but thats gettin abit crazy for starting out.

The differences between all the Technics are in another thread, but heres the quote by DJ Chex:

quote:
Sl-1200/1210MK2
+/-8% pitch
Center dip at 0% to engage quartz lock
1.5KG/cm torque
removable dust cover w/ hinge
Comes w/ rubber mat instead of slipmat
3g antiskate (you probably wont use this feature)
incodescent bulb stylus lamp

sl-1200/1210m3d
+/-8% pitch
no 0% dip like mk2 but reset button located left of pitch fader, (makes it easier to mix when pitch fader is near 0%
1.5KG/cm torque
Hingless dust cover
cartridge holder built in
3g antiskate
Comes w/ rubber mat and a dj slipmat
incodescent bulb stylus lamp

sl-1200mk5
+/-8% pitch
no 0% dip like mk2 but reset button located left of pitch fader, (makes it easier to mix when pitch fader is near 0%
1.5KG/cm torque
Hingless dust cover
cartridge holder built in
Now w/ 6gram antiskate (does this really matter?)
Comes w/ rubber mat and a dj slipmat
LED stylus lamp (yelds longer life)
brake adj pot was moved a little to the right so you can adjust brake without the need to remove the platter

sl-1200MK5G
same as mk5 except a 16% pitch range switch, blue LED stylus lamp, metallic black finish, blue lighted pitch number markers, the tonearm now has horizontal weight knob to help prevent skipping (i had this setting for scratching on my whitelabel, and i just found out it killed the stylus
shit!!!!!!!!!!!!! but on the plus side, it did prevent records from skipping while scratching but killed a $50 stylus!!!!! damn!!! fuck!!!!!)

But honestly, it doesn't matter what model you get, just get the ones that are the best price.

ive been producing for over a year now with a musical background going back 8 or so years. just got an access virus b today. its a very complex instrument. mind bogglingly so. even though i understand the basics of subtractive synthesis i admit, this synth and its feature set go way beyond what i expected of this instrument. it has me stumped half the time. the mod matrix alone is gigantic not to mention the fact that if you havent had any experience with working with oscillators, filters and envelopes you'll be in for a shock with the virus. virus b has various levels of saturation stages between filters. unlike most VSTi's you have to think about routing filters in series or parallel. the frequency modulation (fm synthesis) aspect of the synth is confusing if you dont know anything about fm synthesis. the fact that alot of the features of the virus are hidden away in little menus on that tiny lcd display makes things even harder, especially when most of those features are so abstract. not to mention the fact you need to learn about MIDI and the fact you will need a midi interface soundcard, which depending on how many studio peripherals you plan on hooking up to your pc can get very expensive. it all adds up to a very powerful but very unfriendly synth. i maintain the best place to start production is with an easy to use host like floops and a VSTi like vanguard. vanguard has the basics. oscillators (+ sub oscillator for each one). a filter. an envelope. some easy to use FX. no bullshit in between. no mod matrix hidden away in pop up menus. no programmable arp. no saturation levels or frequency modulation on the oscillators. what you see on the control surface of vanguard is all you need to build an instrument. its a fuck sight easier to program than a virus. and it sounds fab too. getting a copy of cubase and a virus having had no former experience with music production would be like one of the biggest mindfucks you could ever do to yourself.

i got 2 new technics 1200 mk3s and a vestax pcv-275 mixer when i first started mixing, and i'm very very happy with my purchases. I got everything including 2 carts (crappy carts) for 1230 USD, and it was shipped to me. make sure you get carts that are made for mixing trance (hi-fi carts).

and bargain!

you can save a lot of money by bargaining with places, especially online stores...

Which online store did you purchase your stuff from?

Spend it on hookers and blow, the most important part of being a big time DJ.

sounds good....you don't need expensive carts if you're just going to be learning at home. i'm not the stylus expert, but you should be okay with shure cartridges (they come w/stylii).....i like mine, and they are white (not whitelabel) and the number is something like m57x er somethin....

Numark CC-1's

I have them and love them

Posted by Derivative on Dec-05-2004 08:41:

just to let you peeps know...

ebay Item number: 5736165967

stumbled across it looking for headphones.

pair of tech 1200 mkiis + sony mdr-v700 monitor headphones + 2 record bags + flightcases for the techs for 450 + 30 delivery. works out around $900 USD all told although you might get slapped with import duty on that. $600 left over for a mixer too. looks very promising if you are resident in the uk. better check on the condition of the tables first though and as with always with ebay, if it looks too good to be true...pester them for more information. check that ebay will offer buyer protection on it too cuz i didnt see the little shield icon.
