do i really need to...

change my needles?


i'm not having any trouble with the ones i have now... records skip now and then but i think that has more to do with dust.


the thing is they got beat up pretty badly a year ago when i was learning how to spin... you know they got hit against those bumps on the side of the platter and all that bad stuff...


so i guess it's a matter of sound quality... will new needles make that big of a difference? the ones i have now sound ok....

btw i have the dj craze stanton d520sk's

If they're over a year old change your needles and be amazed at the difference it makes. Trust me on this one.

very true. the nature of the depreciation of a stylus is so slow you never hear any difference, until you change them

they will track better too, and take smaller chunks out of your records. listen to the noise the stylus is making as it tracks (those little ticks), it will probably be all scrapy and horrible. when you buy the new ones you will notice the ticks will be a lot more punchy.

I don't think dust really has anything to do with skipping... I could be wrong though... Dust really isn't a big enough roadblock for that flying needle.

i dunno, i have seen some big dust in my time

is it worth it to upgrade? will that really make a big difference?

the 520sk's are decent carts, but in short, yes it will be worth upgrading to either ortofons or shures. as you would guess, i would reccommend the whitelabel carts, they look after your records and they stick to the groove like glue. plus i think they look the best

I own and love the Whitelabels and they do stick like glue I can scratch all day with em and they don't go anywhere. My only gripe is that Shure's stylii are so damn fragile I always end up breaking the needle before I've worn it out.

i recently changed my needles...i had them for a little over a year, and i did notice a change in sound quality, and also when backqueueing, the needle tends not to jump as much (but i try not to backqueue). i got a pair of shure...ummmm.....they're white

Just outta curiousity, how badly do needles wear? And how badly do they wear down the vinyl?

What about my needles for example? Stanton Itracks? (came with the tables)

Yeah I agree with these guys, you can't hear the slow death of your needles until you switch them. I just changed mine because i noticed the highs were getting really distorted. Totally could tell right off the bat once I put the new needles in.. sounded so much better!

check to see what kind of tracking force your tts are set at....try to keep it at 3 grams or under for minimal record wear

Alledgedly (in other words so I've been told) if when take a needle of the record it holds onto the dust(it doesn't drop off) then you probebly need to change the needle. Dunno how true it is though.

You're right new needles won't make huge dust bunnies like worn needles will.

i prefer to call them dogs.

i prefer to call them wookies

it isdef true if your needles are collecting dust it is time for new ones.. i dont know about the dust dropping off though..

For the LOVE of your records, buy new needles..
