-- Sorry, but I have to do a poll for school as well.
Sorry, but I have to do a poll for school as well.
Grade 11 biz ed.
All i need to know are the following.
1. Approx how much have you spent on djing, Vs. How much you have made from djing. (If you have made $0, just say how much youve spent. If youve made more than you've paid for your equipment try to give an idea how much...double, triple, quad?
2. How long did you have it in your head that you wanted to get dj equipment, before you actually got it?
3. What brand do you feel most loyal to?
4. Do you plan to dj for the rest of your life? Or as long as you can? Or do you think that it will slowly fade out of your life.
5. Do you ever regret getting started, or consider stopping dead, to cut off the money you spend on vinyl, and equipment?
I know these seem like odd questions, but I'm not supposed to be getting hard numbers, I'm supposed to determine how devoted, and how long term the market will be.
When our marker read over our survey ideas he said
"how many djs do you know that would answer to this?"
I say "a fair amount"
And he goes "are you sure? Theres only a limited number of radio stations in the area"
I say "no people do it as a hobby at home, or in clubs"
He says "oh, I see, like pokemons?"
I think he'll be surprised to see the money that people spend on this hobby, versus the return.

1. Spent at least ~$6000 over the last 4 years on equipment and vinyl. I've made a little helping a mobile while in high school but since i've got my gear i have just done it as a hobby, so $0
2. About 2-3 years from the time before i was a freshman till the end of my sophomore year & begining of my junior year till i started buying records and gear. My current setup has been a slow upgrade to what it is now.
3. I'm most loyal to Technics. The mobile i knew owned a couple pairs over the years, including the sl-1200ltds. And i have a friend that had owned his 1200mk2 for at least 15 years and it's still working great. Aside from that I'm also very loyal to Rane.
4. Im sure it will eventually fade away. I've seen it happen w/ many people. They get married, and get too busy to play with audio gear. When that day happens to me, Im sure to keep my setup so my future kids can have it when they get older.
5. I go through withdraws, I begin thinking about how i could of spent my money elsewhare and i quit doing it for a month at the most. Then i just crave new vinyl or toys.
Well good luck on your project. I actually did something very similar my junior year business and my teacher thought i was crazy about creating a business plan to open a record store. He was surprised us kids still played with record players.

), $250 on headphones, and I've had 2 past whole DJ setups, but won't include that, and won't include my speakers and amp as I would have those anyway, so about $7000 Cdn.
.
1. ~$1300 on equipment plus ~$1000 or so on vinyl, haven't made any money from it.
2. About a year.
3. None, although maybe Shure since if I upgrade my needles I'll end up going to a higher end Shure(going to the Whitelabels from my M44G's).
4. I'll try to as long as I can, as it hasn't interfered with my life yet. It might start to fade out after college, but I'll have to wait and see. If it fades out I'll probably still have the equipment it's just I'll end up using it less and less.
5. No, but I try to cut back spending on it when I'm not working(when I have school). I am satisfied with the decision to start because it gives me something to practice and work on and it's a fun hobby to do.

Erm this is a tough one.
my personal home setup in terms of hardware (as far as djing goes anyway) is small- but effective, and is everything i need. I could have a great deal more and spend 10 times as much, but i dont really want to.
1200's- cost me 320 ukp
Intimidation mixer- 52 ukp
headphones- too many to list
Stereo/amp/speakers- free
Desk- 50 quid
carts- 6x concordes- lord knows
Bags- 4 UDG 90s, 3 metal boxes and a partridge in a pear tree- $loads
Records- $US defecit x10 probably
Thats not including my first and second set ups, production eqpt, or records (im not even going to try and work that out nor would i want to), or other items that have broken, been stolen, eaten or spontaneously combusted.
When i started out as an unpaid light jock and subsequently warm up jock (again unpaid initially) i made nothing- except maybe a couple of beers from the main dj or the management, despite having to pay out for my records. So obviously at that time i made a loss- but it didnt matter, as i was doing something i enjoyed. It was never and is never about the money for me, hence why some of my figures are non existant- as initially (and now to a certain extent) i didnt/dont care how much it costs.
Now it is my primary income, and everything i spend on related items is Tax deductable- but it wasnt like that for some time.
So in answer to your question: i have absolutely no idea.
---2. How long did you have it in your head that you wanted to get dj equipment, before you actually got it?
When i was 11 (1991- ouch) i heard a mixtape of a (now regarded as seminal and highly important) rave. i could hear all these sounds and i though it was just one giant 90 minute track. I soon found out they were doing this thing called mixing and crossfading, and i was hooked from the point. I was fascinated by vinyl records- everything about them.
I bought my first 12" test press aged about 13 - years before i got any turntables or any means to learn to mix (i was a drummer at the time so my $ went on cymbals and stuff).
I used to like carrying around a record sized carrier bag in town with some tunes in- it felt (and i though looked) pretty cool, especially as the underground hardcore/drum n bass scene and big rave scene was exoploding at the time.
I bought some crappy auto return beast of an old turntable aged about 13 just to listen to records on. the belt was so screwed it took 3 rotations to get up to speed/ I did buy a second one and set up one speaker from each and attempted to learn to mix- albeit in ghetto format!
--3. What brand do you feel most loyal to?
Ortofon,UDG and Sony.- although whatever does the job. I will not be blindly loyal for the sake of it. Whatever does the job best in my opinion. If something does the job i will recommend it highly. Equally, if something is toilet, i will let people know my experiences.
Technics 1200s and the cloud CXM have a special place in my heart reserverd just for them
--4. Do you plan to dj for the rest of your life? Or as long as you can? Or do you think that it will slowly fade out of your life.
Pass. record shop and record label are under construction, as are other avenues i am exploring. I cant see me stopping anytime soon- hearing problems aside. Thats pretty much the only thing that would stop me, and touch wood everything is fine on that front. Even if i did stop i would still have a serious vinyl addiction.
There are plenty of dj related avenues and linked businesses available to people
--5. Do you ever regret getting started, or consider stopping dead, to cut off the money you spend on vinyl, and equipment?
Everyone gets frustrated and pissed off from time to time. this is my passion first and foremost and i do it for the love of it. The fact it became my main source of income was secondary and to a large extent accidental.
On the downsides, it has trade offs.
My social life is very different- when you work weekends and your friends dont it can be awkward. Ditto for girlfriends.
This job cost me my fiance type wench some time ago (it was a large contributing factor at any rate, along with her sucking other peoples cocks). She couldnt stand the job, or the femle attention/proximity, or the fact i couldnt stay in with her on a friday night and watch friends or whatever with her.
Money is money- you cant take it to the grave with you. If i wasnt djing i would be engineering/producing in pro studioa as that was my degree. Its a related field and shares some of the same pros and cons
Smoky environments and loud noise suck and drive me up the wall, so undoubtedly my health will have and will continue to suffer in some respects.
It does have its perks tho- first and foremost being i get paid for doing something i love a great deal and would be doing anyway.
The buzz you get from seeing a crowd explode from something you have played never goes away.
Re: Sorry, but I have to do a poll for school as well.
1. $4,840.. (3,040 on equiptment, 1,800 on vinyls) made $0, hopefully one day this will change
2. I think probably around 4 months..
3. Technics they are wonderful, Pioneer for thier mixer.. I totally love it and it's severed me very well.
4. Aslong as I can... lifestyle permitting.. money.. etc..
5. No, definitly not! I love everything about it..
1. Approx how much have you spent on djing, Vs. How much you have made from djing?
Over $10,000 spent, and about $3000 earned back.
2. How long did you have it in your head that you wanted to get dj equipment, before you actually got it?
2 months or so
3. What brand do you feel most loyal to?
Technics, Dateq, UDG, Sennheiser
4. Do you plan to dj for the rest of your life? Or as long as you can? Or do you think that it will slowly fade out of your life.
Depends on my physical condition and if I can make a living out of it. If it doesn't bring in enough money to buy myself some food, it's no use in continuing.
5. Do you ever regret getting started, or consider stopping dead, to cut off the money you spend on vinyl, and equipment?
No.
1.
Australian Dollars, multiply by 0.72 to get US dollars,
$1000 on gear, $450 on table/booth, over $800 on vinyls (not exactly sure)
Earned - 0
2.
up to six months, not exactly sure again but a fairly long time.
Long time mainly dreaming, but around 6 months seriously thinking about it
3.
Gonna buck the trend, Numark cos thats the gear I have. I look at their stuff first and compare others against it.
**Ducks for cover***
BUT, I'd have no qualms changing brands, so really I probably don't have brand loyalty
4.
I'll be doing it for a long time as a hobby, as long as I love the music I'll do it.
5.
Absolutely no regrets, I realised it was gonna cost shitloads and was prepared for that.

1. I've spent a fortune (10k upwards) on my studio & DJ setup. I've also sunk a fair amount of money into launching a label. Unless I become the next Tiesto, Armin, PVD etc, I'm not going to recoup any time soon.
2. Probably only a few weeks. Once I'd decided that DJ'ing was something I wanted to do, I went ahead and bought the gear. It was a logical step really: I've been a music producer for years.
3. Don't feel particularly loyal to any brand. I prefer to use Technics but only because that's what I'm used to playing on. If (say) Numark bought out the most amazing turntables, they worked for me and were adopted in clubs then I wouldn't keep Technics just for the sheer hell of it.
4. On the one hand, I hope I'm still producing and DJ'ing for the rest of my life. On the other, I don't see of many 70 year old's doing it. Right now, I'd have to say 'yes' but you can't legislate for the future.
5. Don't regret a single moment. Music is what I love.

1. $1500 in equipment, plus an approx. $3000 in vinyl. made back 0
2. about 3 months from the time i said "i wanna DJ" till i had my equipment
3. Technics
4. I plan on keeping my equpment for the rest of my life allthough im sure at some point it will be in a box in my attic (in like 50 years). I will be DJing for as long as im in the scene and enjoying the music.
5. Fuck NO, the only thing i am thinking about doing is using serato so that i dont have to spend as much moeny on vinyl. of couse i will still buy records for those crazy whitelabels, and the really bangin tracks taht you must have on vinyl. but using serato to play off CDs and yes the occasional MP3, but only if it has never been released on CD or vinyl.

1. My current set up for gear was around $3,000 Canadian. And another $3,000 on records. I've made around $1500 from DJing off and on in the past 3 years
2. Wanted the stuff for about 1 1/2 years before I bought anything.
3. Vestax Mixers, Technics Tables, there are about 7 record labels I frequent.
4. I'm stopping May 26 2008- no I'm just kidding. I'll DJ as long as I get some sort of satisfaction out of it. Or until I go deaf.
5. Never regret getting started. It's a hobby, every hobby costs money.
Good luck with the project

1. $3500 spent $0 made
2. 3 months

Its really appreciated.

Re: Sorry, but I have to do a poll for school as well.
1. ~ $40,000 - $50,000 spent (unsure of earnings but over 15 years, probably somewhere near 300,000 or more)
2. 4 years
3. Technics
4. 'til I die
5. No regrets
I think you left out a very important question...
How long have you been a DJ.
Re: Sorry, but I have to do a poll for school as well.
1. I've spent thousands on gear and records and i'm now after 3 years beginning to see a small return on my investment. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication
2. It took me about a year before i finally bought my first record
3. technics, pioneer, sony
4. i'm definitely not going to be djing my whole life, but i imagine i'll wind up in production or audio engineering, a moke "behind the scenes" role
5. I don't regret what i've done, it's what i haven't done that i regret
