Who here can cook?

I'm not talking being able to make toast, cheese and macaroni, anything that goes in a microwave or anything requiring only 2 ingredients.

I'm talking real cooking.

I love to cook.

I really enjoy cooking some traditional Hungarian dishes, some pasta dishes, mexican yummy, thai curries, indian, killer bbq steaks.

Any favorite recipes out there?
What do you cook when you want to impress?

Do you prefer bland, or spicy, or a particular nationality of cuisine?

I cook pretty much everything I eat (I have alot of allergys), and i'm a trained level 4 chef, so yeah, cooking is a strength of mine

I mostly cook japanese/chinese/italian food

Posted by PhloTron on Dec-02-2004 09:19:

I cook...mom taught me well.

Big game and fish...I'm more of a Grillmaster, but I also specialize in Iron Chef style cooking.

Specialties are rubs/sauces for steak/ribs/burger, I can cook halibut ~400 ways, and I make a wicked Salmon Roulade/Brogulet

My full freezer comes in very handy.

...better stop talkin...gets me hungry

I can kinda cook, but it needs work...I'm alright at Italian and German food, and people have complimented me before on my cooking. I enjoy it a lot and would do it more, but I hate having to wash dishes so much...

Posted by dj_mdma on Dec-02-2004 10:31:

yup

i can cook anything with the right ingredients, recipies and resources

Stuff i can cook generally is oriental stuff (I'm oriental), british and asian.

German?

You're into cooking beer, Sauerkraut and airplane-sized sausages?

I'm no hero when it comes to cooking myself, but I've been living away from my parents for about seven years now and I'm still alive, so I must do something right every now and then.

Mostly because my boyfriend's family is Hungarian and stuff, so he taught me how to cook sausages, noodles, cabbage rolls, stews, etc...My father is German also. Oh yeah, sometimes I make Chinese too.

i just love cookin - i mean it starts from watchin all that "cookin like chefs"-shows till the real action [ive got a lot of chefs-technics in slicin and all that stuff - kinda cool to compete with my mom ] ... i am good in French,Italian, Balkan, Jewish [of coz ] and also Asian food...
my current favorites r "lozania" abd "sushi" - yea i actually make sushi at home by myself [bought all that special sushi-stuff lately so...]

most of the time i like to kinda improvise with the food i make im not talkin about full-on-improvisin coz u just can spoil the recept... i just like to add smth that i feel will bring the food sm new taste and flavour...

ps:there is 1 thing i didnt tell ya guys - i cant bake... thats the only thing i didnt learn dunno why but its just not me when talkin about bakin...

ps2:guys who r cookin - do u have some high quality japanese / german knives or just use what your mom use since shes young?...
i know some shops in here i saw there knives for about 150$ for a single - some real quality stuff!...

sometimes i love to cook, but i really have to be in the mood, which is quite rare at the moment.

i enjoy cooking chilli's the best, i like it with a bit of spice (habanero pepper sauce is a must). i also like cooking the odd indian, or a sweet and sour for a change.

my cooking skills are good, but i don't have a wide reportoire

Posted by Dervish on Dec-02-2004 11:00:

Yeah I like cooking. Normally I just take what I've got add various other things and see what happens (not in a shit way). I make my own pasta and pizza bases (as in from flour and stuff). Good fun and great eating

BBQ master chef right here

I love meat

Posted by AwakenedAddict on Dec-02-2004 12:03:

I love to cook, but I don't do it as often as I should. I got accepted to culinary school, but I chose to go to UofToronto instead :P

Last night I whipped up a sick tomato/vegetable/salmon pasta sauce from scratch. It's my favorite thing to cook!

Posted by DJ_Bod on Dec-02-2004 12:34:

I can cook anything I have the recipe for. It's not really that hard to follow directions. *shrug* I just make sure that I have tried it out before I share with multiple people.

But since I still live with the 'rents, I don't have to cook all too often.

Posted by fitom tiel on Dec-02-2004 13:52:

i'm at that point where i could be a chef if i wanted to. i improvise sometimes. and i've cooked basically everything from mexican to oriental; it's just a matter of having the right ingredients and ideas, and it's hard sometimes with asian food.
also, i'm mostly a vegan now and i'm mostly eating healthy (NB: not light, but sometimes), so a lot of healthy vegan dishes from anywhere. fish and shrimp and salmon would probably be my specialty.
favourite ingredient: anything with an alcohol content.

as for baking, i can do it, but i choose not to most of the time. it's way too methodical, like being in the chemistry lab.

@taltul, you don't have to spend that much money on, say, a Ginsu knife. just make sure whatever you have is thoroughly sharpened. strange, but the sharper, the safer.

Posted by Dervish on Dec-02-2004 14:05:

I practicly never use a recipe, much prefer simple stuff with good ingredients and well thought out use of them. And nice sauces, using wine to deglaze pans used for searing meat for example.

how's that working out for ya?

Posted by XeQtOr on Dec-02-2004 14:13:

I cook most of my meals by myself. My mom taught it to me .. She is the better cook though .. I don't use any recipes either. Just have some basic ingredients and then improvise the rest...

Posted by Slylee on Dec-02-2004 14:21:

i'm a pretty decent cook myself, and i love entertaining. i'm not so much a "from scratch" type of cook though because i don't have time. i'm very good at making quick meals and sort of spicing them up a bit with my own stuff and making it taste like i slaved in the kitchen for hours, when really it only took like 30 min.

i make great burgers (i marinate the beef with spices and teryaki sauce). i like sliced avocado on my burgers too.

i also make a great stuffed salmon filet. i buy them prestuffed with crab meat from the seafood market, and then i put spicy sechuan sauce, honey, and teryaki sauce..then i make sort of a nut crust topping with ritz crackers and chopped nuts w/ melted butter.

another great and easy way to make good veggies is to just add Kraft Italian dressing and let them simmer in a pan (covered) on medium for like 10 minutes. i do that with asparagus & fresh green beans.

Posted by Halcyon+On+On on Dec-02-2004 14:36:

Mmmmm, Slylee - you're making me hungry.

*goes to get some pretzels*

Here's a good one:

San Francisco Pork Chops

4 pork chops
1 teaspoon oil
----SAUCE----
1 garlic clove, minced
2 teaspoon oil
4 tablespoon dry sherry or broth
4 tablespoon soy sauce
1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper
----FINAL TOUCH----
2 teaspoon cornstarch
2 tablespoon water

ingredients together and set aside. 2. Trim pork chops of fat and saute in hot oil until brown on both sides. 3. Pour sauce over chops. Cover tightly and simmer over low heat until chops are tender and cooked through, 30 to 35 minutes. Add a little water, (1 to 2 Tb) if needed to keep sauce from cooking down too much. Turn once. 4. Remove chops to platter. Stir in cornstarch dissolved in water. Cook until thickened. 5. Pour over chops and serve. Tips: Boneless pork loin chops can be used. Trim fat and pound to 1/4-inch thickness. Cooking takes only 20 minutes.

I find you can replace the pork with chicken very easily, especially since the chicken tends to marinate much better than pork more often then not. Also, for added spice, half of a fresh Jalapeno pepper cut into slices will make things more interesting

mostly a vegan?

I always thought you either were or you weren't?

Coz seafood is also a no-no for vegans.

Me, I like all foods and can cook really well, always used to help out my mom in the kitchen growing up, really came in useful when I moved to the UK

My fav dish to cook is Chilli Con Carne
