Playin' Trance for ppl who've never heard of it

Ok. I hope no one's asked this already b/c then I'd just be runnin my mouth. But anyway, I gotta play trance music at a REALLY important dance for a bunch of assholes who've never heard of trance before. All they've heard of in their lives is hip-hop. So how and what do I play to get the people dancin'?

Armin Van Buuren ft. Justine Suissa - Burned with desire (Rising Star Remix)

Start with some house remixes of R&b/hip hop tunes, and some mash ups.
Then some pretty commercially type dancey trancey stuff- if that goes well then take it from there.

Id also suggest keeping it pretty vocal, and not much moody stuff either. Find a trancey remix of some well known tunes and you might be on to a winner

Its a school dance. I was thinkin' about starting it with some breaks / Oakenfold stuff and then changin to somethin like Earthbound- One Nation Trance Nation and goin on from there. Basically, I figured I keep it as fast as possible after that. I dont know if that will work. Another problem is that I have to change from the DJ before me [who's going to be playing R&B and stuff like that]. He's probably going to plug his laptop into the CD system and play which is a real pain in the ass b/c I'm using turntables. Just to give you more of an idea of who these people are: Mostly preppy people [ppl who try to act preppy] They all think they're "gangsta" when clearly they're just tryin to act like it.

theres too many things to consider to give any good advice other than to try and keep the mixes quick, if you're playing the same track for anywhere near 8+ min it gets old, alot of hip-hop ppl dont like "techno" much even though you arent playing techno.. thats what everyone thinks it is untill you educate em on the diff genres of EDM

if you know any scratchwork that might help ya some, but remember theres a big difference in what actually sounds cool and what sounds like a desperate attempt at being cool - that being said, if you do scratch any, make it short and simple, alot of things fall into the opinion of being lame so whatever you do dont overdo yourself

love to help out, but it helps to know what you have in your set if you want better advice...

what do you have? mostly trance? some trance along with like house, DnB,....

btw, good luck, ppl see turntables and the very first thing most think is that you're gonna do some scratching and get dissapointed when you dont... whatever you do... hope its in their face and badass...

as much as you might not like it... get come played-out, comercial trax.
and, if the crowd likes hip hop, get some new hip hop tracks.

also curiously.....if its really not a trance crowd.......why bother play'n there?

Well hate to say it man but first of all they are going to HATE it. and they will probably make fun of you call you a fag, especially if you play and e-tard fluff trance,,,,,stay away from the nu-nrg lol.

i mean unless you are freinds with all of them but by the way you described them you arnt.

Seriously throw lots of breaks their way. And for the love of god stay away from the cheesy shit.

As far as mainstream crowds go, I've learned to avoid huge breakdowns at all costs. Hip-hop heads do NOT like long breakdowns!

My "hip-hop crowd" sets (when I'm not actually playing hip-hop ) start off with stuff like

JXL vs. Elvis -- Little Less Conversation
Wiseguys -- Start the Commotion
BT -- Never Gonna Come Back down

You know, big, breaky, energetic tunes. If they can handle that, I'll start heading into some funky house.

RHV -- Never Let Me Down
Madison Ave -- Don't Call Me Baby

Stuff like that. I may throw in some big hip-hop remix tracks if I can, as well.

Then, I start to introduce trance. It pretty much has to be mainstream trance (or hard house) at first, in my experience.

Faithless -- Insomnia
Darude -- Sandstorm
Sash! -- Ecuador
New Order -- Confusion (Pump Panel Reconstruction)

Yeah, all of those things are overplayed. But a lot of people haven't heard them all that much, and they LIKE it.

And then we move to some newER big tracks.

Ferry Corsten -- Punk & Rock Your Body, Rock
Perpetual Dreamers -- Sound Of Goodbye (X-Mix) (Actually a very high-energy, popular track when I play it.)

If they're still with me, I may move onto the more "underground" (to them) anthems.

Rank 1 -- Breathing (Breaks Dub)
Tiesto -- Traffic
Push -- Strange World

At this point, if they're still with me, I can try playing a bit more progressive/non-anthemic stuff. But they can be pretty fickle, and one song the crowd collectively doesn't like can lead to calls for hip hop, or a complete dancefloor fire-drill.

I like playing prog breaks and such, but playing to an empty floor sucks.

Im about to do this too man. My suggestion is NOT to play Burned with Desire. Repeat: DO NOT PLAY ARMIN VAN BUUREN, ESPECIALLY "BURNED WITH DESIRE" YOU WILL GET SHOTDOWN. Gagstas dont like listening to euro-chicks "whining"/"orgasming." Play somthing w/ really deep + steady beats: they will expect this. Throw in some Sandstorm (Darude's origenal mix), and if you can, throw in a few R&B vocals (like Usher) or notsogangsta' rap and pair it with some techno/house stuff. These guys probly will not be ready to 'dance' as we know it, they'll much prefer to grind w/eachother and call you a fag if you lay down an hour of dutch vocal-trance. DJ_Ikronix, now that i read his post, had a really good suggestion w/ songs. Be ready to pull out with some super over-played/popular dance tunes. Like "Milkshake" (i luv that song). And there's a really good mix of Britany Spears' "Toxic" with Usher+JayZ's song that came out this summer ("Yeah" maybe?). NO rave stuff, no "acid or xtacy" no "a little bit of xtacy" none of those reference songs, you will get crushed. You never know, some of these kids might be secretly rockin to Ian Van Dahl...but probably not. If your in NJ or PA lemme know and Ill come commiserate! And let us know how it goes. I'll say once more: stay away from the trancy vocals, they kill, I know...

Oh man, I completely forgot. A VERY effective way to either introduce them to house/trance or escape from it if they aren't feeling it is BOOTY BASS.

Stuff like that. Hip-hop heads usually like that stuff. I typically use it as an escape route if they hate the stuff I'm throwing down, but it could EASILY be used to start out and work your way in.

in this case bennassi is your friend

i had a great time playing "techno" to a non "techno" crowd

play some darude, bennassi, the slide vs white stripes remix, all the big popular crap

and u mite not be playing the best music but u should still have a great time because the crowd is dancing

slowly progress into the trance or edm just as dj_ikronix sez

definatly try to keep it as vocal as possible, but throw in some good vocaless tunes in every now and again. and id say progress through a few different styles, starting with some hip hop vs trance mash ups and then slowley building upto trance?

Yup, vocal and commercial is the way to go. Breaks also work very nice.

I've played for a non-trance crowd before, and I had a very hard time getting them to dance. I played lots of commercial and well-known tunes, and that kept them on the dancefloor for a few minutes. As soon as I layed down something they didn't know, they were gone.

At my school, I sometimes give cd's to people.. I've found that they appreciate tracks like Portishead - Roads (Sultan & Tone Depth Remix) to the harder tracks like Ernesto vs. Bastian - Who's the Starter? I say start off with a good vocal track, maybe some Sarah McLachlan, not silence though :P give that to them in the middle of the set to blow em away hehe... also maybe some Delerium.

They also seemed to like tracks like.. Whirlpool - Under The Sun, and Solid Globe - North Pole. So it really I think depends on how stubborn your audience is. But I thought people in my school were going to give me very negative feedback on the tracks, since I live in LA and radio has nearly destroyed most good music here. Oh, and they love tracks with a piano, Marco V vs. Jens - Loops & Things Relooped and Coldplay - Clocks (Ron Van Bueken[spelling is probably wrong] mix)

What they didn't seem to like were tracks like Envio - Time To Say Goodbye (Passiva Remix), complaint was the wooshy sound was weird. Also Midway - Amazon, they liked the breakdown, but not the beginning or end.

VOCAL & MELODIC TRANCE!!

I spin in the land where clubbers been poison by Progressive House & Chessy Trance *Asian Ears* ........

There was a time, i spin a progressive trance & tech trance... the clubber feel that the songs is wierd *bunch of them are my friends, they say the song make me dizzy*

so i whacked on vocal trance... a dreamy female sound.. 1st i put in agnelli n nelson - holdin onto nothing then satellite.. n back to prog trance... i got nothing!! They seat n watch... then back again to vocal stuff... it was the most magically scene.. playing this track "ANDAIN - BEAUTIFUL THINGS (PHOTON PROJECT REMIX)" for 1min.. when it comes to the uplifting part... then magic comes..
Clubbers HANDS IN THE AIR!! Then after this song goes Alphazone - Revelation... n WOW!!! They dance hard, Jumpin around, n shaking their heads of the dope in their bodies!! LOL ....following the flow... i put in HARD TRANCE.. such as Special D, Dumonde, Yoji Stuff...*Groove Coverage - The End (Special D Mix)... helps me pump the party hard!* n they love the night!

But till now they reconginze trance as TECHNO or a melodical Progressive house.. n sometime they put trance = progressive house... SAD about this!!

are you fucking joking? dude if you play any hands in the air euro cheese vocal shit you are ganna get your ass kicked. its been said before, shitty whiny euro whore vocals would piss me of let alone a bunch of asshole hip-hop junkies who have never heard of trance before.

anyways... if theyre a hip-hop crowd give em what they want

at my school dances all they play is hip-hop and then like 2 EDM tunes near the end

go out and grab a few hip-hop tunes or if you have a CDJ available burn some

you may get some good turnout from playing your stuff but if you have a long set not everyone is gonna care to listen to your music for very long...

im thinkin maybe playing a couple well known hiphop tunes then a few of your own then a couple more hiphop...

dont forget slow tunes... its a school dance, not some nightclub or massive... the crowds gonna wanna get all snuggly cuddly with eachother and ya cant do that with upbeat stuff

are you gonna be the only source of music or is there gonna be some other guy there with a CD box?

Just do your stuff... don't mention the crowd. If i go to a party where the play music i dislike (like hip hop), i'll never dance and get bored. If it isn't your taste, u have to exept it... same with your set... just play your best tunes and hopefully some will get along!

i am totally opposite of that....if your a mobile dj that is what u do....if u specialize in trance or whatever u don't play house to to play to the crowd.....what u do is pass up the gig because there is no reason for u to be play'n there......why is this so hard to understand?


why would a trance dj play hip hop for a crowd?....its unfair to all involved to bring in a trance dj for a crowd that wants anything but that

I wouldn't accept a gig at a Top 40 Club then go in there and play only underground hip-hop because thats what I'm into. I don't see how hard it is for some people to understand that. If you can't get a gig playing to a crowd that will appreciate your music then try harder. I've played a few parties where I knew everyone wanted to hear Top 40 music and I had a friend come with a cheap CDJ and a bunch of burned CDs and we tagged that crappy ass music all night and I did some scratching and everyone got down on the dance floor so I still had a damn good time. Can't beat playing records at a women's dormitory while its snowing with all the free beer you can drink even if I did hate the music I was playing.
