European buying equipment from the US
Hey!
I was just wondering if anyone has experience with buying stuff from the US and shipping it to europe. The dollar is very low at the moment so prices are too good to be ignored
I browsed around at some american dj shops but they rarely give out shipping prices or are very vague in their shipping conditions. Any other stuff I should think about before buying, like taxes etc... ?

Contact the dj shops directly in regards to shipping charges.
You will also want to take into consideration the fact most equipment is not voltage switchable so you will need to get a converter.
There's also the fact that the manufacturer in Sweden may not cover your product under warranty if it were to go defective; they would refer you back to the USA. It's unfair but they do it.
It's best to ask around from people who get shipped big valuables to your country and see if they get taxed; try asking the post office too.
Yeah i'm in the same boat as you x-scream bout taking upon the fact that the dollar is so weak to the pound but since i live in the uk its really a waste because when tax,vat & such like are added to the price it just adds up to the price that you can buy it at home...
Unless i'm wrong in saying this?

a word of advice: if it looks too good to be true - it probably is.
i bought an m-audio delta 1010 from the states over the internet from the uk. in the uk at the time of purchase you could get a delta 1010 for about 380 to 400. i bought it for around 250 from the us.
however.
international shipping was 25.
it was seized by customs that slapped VAT on it to the tune of 17.5% of the declared price. 62. that was actually 52 + a 10 customs charge.
when i got it, i needed a step up transformer to use the thing. cost - 35 + 4 delivery.
grand total: 376
4 off retail in the uk. also, buying from the US it took weeks before i could actually use it (a week international delivery, customs seizing it for a few days and then waiting for the transformer to arrive etc)
it really isnt worth it. it looks great until you get hit by the extra, hidden charges.
Yeah.
Always looks good at first but in pratical terms or receiving it, its something different
Shame too when the dollars so weak at the moment...

Dj Tranz, could you tell me if you know about vat,tax & such like that get charged on goods while entering the Eu & the Uk.
Ie. Say i would like to purchase TTx1's & get them sent to Uk, how much would be added to them over & above the price?
Thanks.
Ive done it before
smaller items (headphones carts and certainly records) yes- go for it.
My sony 7506s cost $$99, but then i had to pay $35 shipping (parcel force lost them for 2.5 weeks too) and i then had to pay 8 ukp vat and a 13.50ukp handling fee. I only did it as they are not available in europe, and the exchange rate is too good to ignore.
larger items no.
You will get fucked up the ass for shipping and customs ( i got a quote to ship a pair of 1210s US--> uk once and it was ridiculous. )
On top of the customs fee, parcel force, ups, fedex etc all charge a 'handling fee' for paying your customs up front which is about 15 quid ON TOP of the VAT+ import. Smaller things you can get away with, but larger things not a chance in hell
You get charged 10% of the value as import duty, and then 17.5% of the NEW total of VAT, plus handling fee.
So

Your call........
F tht for shipping turntables.
Though i'm going to go ahead with buying shure whitelabels frm the states.
100 + shipping, tax, duty & the rest which, the person said was only about 10 - 15 on top of the price + shipping which ain't bad at all considering they go for 160 for a pair in the UK.
definately get stylus and stuff there yes
I wouldnt dream of paying 44 quid for a nightclub S stylus in the uk when i can buy them from the states for 15 quid each
