Read This! Science quiz everyone. I need your help all!

Oke from our school we received a quiz that we may answer and we can win prizes.

There are some questions we can try to solve, ya I mite win a prize, but some of them are fun imo.

Ill put the questions where I need an answer from, any help is welcome .

A wine glass will produce sound if you rub the edge of it with a wet finger. What will happen with the tone if your going to fill the glass?
-The tone will be higher
-The tone will be lower
-The tone will be the same.

Probably a sound engineer question, but my guess it would be lower.

Oke Second question.
Why do people look up in the sky when you ask them a question? (I hardly notice this tbh, but thats the question)
-To avoid a question
-Trying to cover up a lie
-To focus better.

Third Question.
A good swimmer tries to swim 6 kilometers. The water has a temperature of 37 degrees Celcius. What will happen?
-He will swim slower than he expected.
-He will swim faster than he expected, because the temperature is ideal for his mucels.
-He wont make the finish.

Fourth Question.
How can you display color in a black-white television(those old TVs )?
-By sending a Chromodigital(translating it directly from dutch, no clue what it is) with the screen.
-By turning on and off the color siginal with a rate of 50 times a second.
-By displaying really fast black and white areas.

Fifth Question.
Which wheel will spin harder? If you take a turn with a bicycle, both wheels are equally big.
-The front one.
-The rear one.
-Both wheels spin equally hard.

Sixth Question
You have a bag with a white ball in it. You put BLINDLY a red or a white ball with it. Then you take blindly a ball out from the bag, and this ball seems to be white. How big is the chance that the ball that got left in the bag, white is?
-1/2
-2/3
-3/4

Bleh maths., probably 2/3?

Seventh Question.
Why do pidgins bounce their heads when they walk?
-To stay in balance.
-Try to impress other pidgins
-To see things better.

Oke guys and girls thats it, if anyone know some of them, would love to know J. Especially the second question, could be all 3 IMO

isn't it in psychology that they say a person is trying to focus and that's why they look upward? when they look downard they're lying.

im pretty sure it gets higher, because think of when you have an empty wine bottle (assuming you have ever blown in it) and its pretty low, i dont think it would get lower but would get higher when you filled it up. an easy way to check this one out would be to go get yourself a wine glass, and try it....

about 5 mins of work

A bottle is different than a wine glass.

Blowing is also not the same as rubbing the edge.

You mite be right, but it just seems to easy then.

Posted by Tranc3 on Dec-07-2004 21:20:

1) Higher tone

2) Depends on which way they look (left vs. right), although the way it's worded, I suspect the answer would be "to focus better"

3) Cold water is ideal, I notice I get sluggish and tire more easily when I swim in warmer water. I'd say the swimmer would go slower, but since the swimmer is strong, probably make it.

4) No idea

5) Both wheels will spin with the same angular velocity. The same size indicates both have the same rotational inertia. I'd say they'll spin equally "hard" - whatever "hard" means.

6) 3/4 - First you have a white ball. From that you branch out into the two posibilities inside the bag - white/white, and white/red. Then you have four total possibilities for pulling out a ball - white, white, white, or red.

7) No idea

No that's correct, think of a trombone player - basically all you do is enlarge or decrease the size of the wind pipe. Since sound travels at a constant speed, the decreased size will cause it to resonate at a higher rate inside the wind pipe.

eh by harder i mean faster..sorry, translating from dutch to english sux if you do it fast.

Oke seems we agree that question 2 is Focusing.

Getting mixed answers on the Tone thing.

Yes the questions says an experienced swimmer.

Thanks, i'll be off to sleep now will check back tomrrow .

I thought it was looking up and to the left was lying, and up/up to the right was recalling memory. Only correct about 60% of the time though, from what I remember.

Ah true, i thought that sound will also travel through the water, and makes it resonate slower instead.

The answer is "trying to cover up a lie" because the movement of the eyes coordinate with the brain accessing different parts, and this motion coordinates with the creative part of the brain, hence a lie is being formed. I forget where I heard this, but I've definitely heard it before, I suggest you look it up on google though.

Well it will, actually because sound is a longitudinal wave it can travel through anything, as long as there's something present. But for this example, the water effectively acts as a barrier to a portion of the soundwaves that get reflected back to your ears - and thus what you hear.

Oh and plus because of its' longitudinal properties, sound will travel faster through denser materials. It's light that slows down in water.

>> higher. the resonant frequency will be higher - in the same way that if you boing a ruler, then move it INTO the table, and there's less to boing (more liquid means less vertical glass to resonate), the sound goes up.

>>> apparently there is some psychology to this. some people look down, others look up. the sort of person who looks down is attempting to reason quietly, the person who looks up is attempting to pick a thought out of experience (or something)

-He will swim slower than he expected.
-He will swim faster than he expected, because the temperature is ideal for his mucels.

>>> slower, at an educated guess. i guess his body won't be able to dissipate the heat it generates..or at least, won't get cooled. maybe kind of like a cpu with a warm heatsink.

>>> do you mean literally display colour? you can't, because a B&W TV only has the one electron gun. if you mean how can the TV display anything, it's because the ~5MHz bandwidth that the TV signal is broadcast on, contains colour and B&W information.

Fifth Question.
Which wheel will spin harder? If you take a turn with a bicycle, both wheels are equally big.
-The front one.

by hard..do you mean....faster? with more momentum (as in harder to stop?) i think they would both spin the same speed, but the wheel with more mass attached to it (either cos of a thicker tyre etc, or cos it has pedals attached to it via chain) would have more momentum

quote:

Seventh Question.
Why do pidgins bounce their heads when they walk?
-To stay in balance.

balance i would imagine. same reason we swing our arms. they don't need to impress other pidgeons with that. they can fly for fucks sake. that's cool enough.

or i could be completely wrong. if i fuck up ur marks, you ain't seen me...rite? x

37 degrees Celsuis? Imagine swimming in a pool that hot, it's like a jacuzzi! He might make it, but he'll definitely go slower.

2. Come on people when you lie do you just randomly look to the sky? No.

3. 37 C. Theres no way you'd cover 6k unless you were weird.

5. I'm assuming it means which one will yoube able to spin faster. The front doesn't have the same amount of friction so for a given amount of force you'd get a higher speed.

6. Guys guys guys think about it, you take out the white ball... theres a 50/50 chance you put another white in 50/50 that you put a red in....

i dont think there is any reason for it to have less friction...that depends on the bearings

if you spun them identically, the one with more mass would spin longer, but they wouldn't get any faster

probably

Posted by Dervish on Dec-07-2004 22:06:

Ok back wheel is mounted on bearings and connected via a chain (more friction) which is connected to pedals (on bearings). So defo more friction defo more mass so IMHO will be harder to spin to given speed.

EXPLAINED EARLIER

Oke Second question.
Why do people look up in the sky when you ask them a question? (I hardly notice this tbh, but thats the question)
-To avoid a question
-Trying to cover up a lie
-To focus better.

???? - I BELIEVE IT IS TO COVER UP A LIE

Third Question.
A good swimmer tries to swim 6 kilometers. The water has a temperature of 37 degrees Celcius. What will happen?
-He will swim faster than he expected, because the temperature is ideal for his mucels.

THINK ABOUT IT: 37C = 98.6F -- THE NATURAL TEMP. OF THE BODY

Fourth Question.

-By sending a Chromodigital(translating it directly from dutch, no clue what it is) with the screen.
-By turning on and off the color siginal with a rate of 50 times a second.
-By displaying really fast black and white areas.

NO IDEA, GUESSING 3

Fifth Question.
Which wheel will spin harder? If you take a turn with a bicycle, both wheels are equally big.
-Both wheels spin equally hard.

THEY ARE ON THE SAME PATH, SAME SIZE - THEY ARE TRAVELING THE EXACT SAME DISTANCE - MUST SPIN THE SAME

Sixth Question
You have a bag with a white ball in it. You put BLINDLY a red or a white ball with it. Then you take blindly a ball out from the bag, and this ball seems to be white. How big is the chance that the ball that got left in the bag, white is?
-3/4

THERES HALF A CHANCE THAT YOU WILL PUT A RED BALL IN, THEN HALF A CHANCE YOU WILL PULL THE WHITE BALL OUT (1/4 CHANCE RED BALL STAYS IN BAG, THEREFORE 3/4 CHANCE WHITE BALL STAYS IN BAG)

Seventh Question.
Why do pidgins bounce their heads when they walk?
-To stay in balance.

http://www.straightdope.com/classics/a1_016

Hope that helps.

think we basically agree with each other?!

the pedals will be on bearings which will mean 2 (ish) time the amount of friction. the chain will create slightly more friction but that would be cancelled out my the mass that the chain has.

so the rear wheel will definitely have more mass associated with it and as a result more momentum, and be harder to spin up to speed in the first place

anyone fancy going down the pub...

Posted by Ondrayce on Dec-07-2004 23:12:

Are both wheels planted on the ground? If so, then neither wheel will be moving faster than the other.

Also people look down to create and look up to remember.
