i did go to u.b.c. for a year... i'm not too far out from there right now either. are you planning on going there? or just have some questions about it? let us know...

Posted by Widget on Oct-29-2001 18:00:

I posted this question a couple of days back.
Not sure if you're replying to mine specifically or this is pure luck.

I'm probably going to be applying to do my MSc there next year.

Was just wondering what the place was like?
Also anything I should know about the Univ. &/or Vancouver.
I'm coming from overseas so any help, answers, suggestions etc would be appreciated.

Thanks
A.

i dont go to ubc, i go to sfu, but i can tell ya, ubc is BIG! too damn huge for the lil me
ive got friends who go there. it seems to be a nice school with lots of resources and sciences is one of its biggest and most popular faculties, not sure about grad school tho, must be pretty popular too cause its big. theres tons of researches going on there. ive got a friend whos majoring in quantum physics, if you want, i could give you her icq # and you can talk to her.

I go to UBC, I'm in 3rd year there double majoring in Comp. Sci and English. It's a HUGE campus, lots of students, and as a result lots of life. Kind of sucks in the rain, which is pretty often in Vancouver, so make sure you pack an umbrella =)

If you have any specific questions just ask em here.

sean im gonna 2nd yr, gonna major in english most very likely, any recommendations for courses/profs?

im in 201 w/ ian dennis right now and 207 w/ michael zeitlin...

Thanks for all the replies. Glad to see there are a number of TAs there.

35 000 odd students - it's massive. but it's also rated top 3 Comp. Sci in Canada & top-10ish for North America.

One of the big questions that I'm interested in getting answered is on the Residences. Since I'm going to have to stay in one for 2 years. Are there any I should avoid or especially try & get a room in?

Sean, everyone I have spoken to has warned me about the rain. I'll just pack a massive umbrella & a decent jacket or 2 or 3.

Sean, since you're in 3rd year now, what do you think of the lecturers? They seem pretty jacked & qualified, but what are their actual lecturing skills like & do they know their stuff?

Thanks
A.

i think the best residence to try and get into is the "thunderbird (T-Bird) residence". they are like 2 story townhouses (probly with a roommate or two) and very nice. as opposed to the appartment-style "gage" (4 people per appt). and i think t-bird is for grad students. i'm not positive on this, cos its been a few years since i attended there. when i was there, i stayed in "Totem park", 3RD KWAK babay w00t w00t!!!, which is where some of the 1st and 2nd year students stay (the cool ones ). needless to say it gets pretty wild in there lol, but dont worry, they wouldn't put a grad student in there. theres got to be more than 35000 students, there was over 40000 when i was there, and enrollment has increased, but not too important i guess. anyway, keep us updated.

Yea, I had a look at T-Bird. Looks good. But it's also a little more expensive. I suppose it will depend on any scholarships, bursaries etc.

Will do. I'm aiming to send all app. forms etc by mid-November. Hopefully find out anything sometime after that.

widget, come to SFU, we're number 1 in canada, 2 (or maybe more) years in a row! we've got less ppl then theyve got at ubc, and ppl are more friendly, and its just plain better

BAH!!!

widget, go to ubc

Posted by fastmp3 on Oct-31-2001 08:10:

haha maintenant les gens de Vancouver parlent francais et ceux de montreal parlent anglais ?? lol mais c'est le monde a l'envers ici

Posted by apri_peel on Oct-31-2001 08:39:

allo FASTDJMP3 ca fait longtemps que j'frequente pas le forum de mtl. y'en manque du monde qui parle francais ici a vancouver

widget, i know you already made up your mind about ubc, but im just saying that sfu is a good school cause we specialize more in many faculties. i noticed you're in comp sci, sfu used to have a good comp sci program, now they changed everything from C++ to java, which messed things up a lil. and they lacking profs, hell my comp sci prof is a physicist

btw, rob, i dont think widget speaks french :P

Posted by jesten on Oct-31-2001 15:50:

Man I am jealous, I can't join in this thread. I don't know french and I don't go to school. All I can do is spam.

Posted by fastmp3 on Oct-31-2001 19:52:

Hey Hey apri_peel ca va bien ?

Posted by Widget on Oct-31-2001 23:11:

Okay, to clear things up:

1) I don't speak French, at all. So if anyone posted any comments to me in French, you're going to have to repost them - sorry.

2) SFU - ???? S* F* University? You're going to have to be more specific. What university is this?

From what I can see the top 3 Comp. Sci. universities in Canada are:

University of Toronto
University of Britsh Columbia
McGill University

Not sure of the exact order. The reason I am applying to UBC is because of the research & work that they are doing. Also, because of the people & faculty there. I am specifically not looking for a university based on their programming research (& knowledge). My research in 4th year has been on hardware-based DNA pattern matching. So I'm looking for the hardware side of things as well a little on the graphics (which generally have been using C or C++

Posted by .montecarlo. on Oct-31-2001 23:25:

SFU = Simon Fraser University

um, i think everything written in french was just jokin around, nothin related to university.

ubc is an awsome school, you wont be disappointed!

i just put sfu down cos those two schools have had a long-standing rivalry, its all jokes tho, its a good school too.

Despite the fact that I'm 3rd year, this is actually my first Semester at UBC, I transferred in after spending 2 years at a college. So far my Teacher's are all really good, especially my English ones. My Shakespeare prof is absolute money, she knows SO much =) As with all places you'll have good and bad teachers, but I definitely haven't ran into any profs that don't know their shit, it's just their personalities you may not quite get along with.
