Lady on welfare finds and gives away $40,000 to a BANK!
Some of you Torontonians may have heard in the news recently of a middle-aged lady on welfare, mother of six kids, getting rich for a minute. She notices an airborne crispy 20 dollar bill, and after a little further observation, notices a bag stacked with bills worth around $40,000 in a middle of a road, as cars pass by without noticing the money. So she collects all the money, down to the single dollar, and goes to the nearest bank and DONATES it. Later on in the day she borrows 10 bucks from her daughter to buy a pack of smokes...
By the way, as a sign of goodship, the bank GAVE her back a misely 2,000 bucks ... cheap bastards ...
My question is: Do you think it was a right idea? (See above poll) Should she have kept the money? Or another solution ...
I personally think it was TOTALLY WRONG what she did. First of all, we are all ignorant and selfish, and giving money to people is not a very good thing, any way you look at it. She obviously could've used the money, considering that she's on welfare and has 6 KIDS ... or at least, if she was so kind, instead of GIVING ALL THE MONEY, she should've at least pocketed some of it, and the rest she should've gave to some charity or Salvation Army ... WHY GIVE IT TO AN ALREADY-RICH bank? She's absolutely STUPID, no offense or anything. I am glad I dont have to be ashamed she is a relative of mine, thank God.
The money was unclaimed by anyone - it didnt belong to the bank in the first place ... probably some drug dealer dropped it out of the moving car for some reason, like an accident, or a fight, whatever .... what a stupid woman, and I cant believe toronto sun had her all over the front page, there's more important news that should go there ... I dont need to read about how stupid some people can be ... what a good lesson - give your money to the bank for KEEPING!

One good turn...
Mom who turned in $40Gs gets a $2Gs cash thank-you from bank
By BRIAN GRAY, TORONTO SUN
THE HONEST mom who turned in an estimated $40,000 in found money to a bank is getting her reward. Debbie Peliti got a call from TD Canada Trust's head office yesterday and was told the bank will give her $2,000 for her good deed.
"I didn't expect it, I didn't want anything for a reward," Peliti said last night before a celebration dinner with her family. "This thing just snowballed."
Peliti was walking along Kingston Rd. near McCowan Ave. on Monday when she spied a $20 bill blowing in the wind. That was when she noticed an entire bag of bundled bills lying by the side of the road.
She ran to a nearby TD Canada Trust branch to ask for help. The bank kept the money while an investigation was conducted to find the rightful owner.
Yesterday, TD Canada Trust vice-president Matt Chevalier cut a cheque for Peliti.
"We really wanted to thank this woman for being a stand-up citizen," Chevalier said.
Chevalier said the bank is "still investigating" where the money came from but the working theory is that it was destined for one of its automated banking machines.
Peliti -- a mother of six who is on welfare -- decided to use some of the reward money on a dinner for sons, Jeffrey and Chance, daughters, Colleen and Jennifer O'Brien and three grandkids, Matthew, Sydirah, and Israel O'Brien.
"It's not something we get to do very often," Peliti said of the family night out at the Mandarin at Eglinton Ave. E. and Birchmount Rd.
"We don't usually have family dinners," she joked. "We have shareholder meetings."
What will become of the balance of the reward hasn't been determined yet, Peliti said.
In addition to the cash reward, employees at the Irving Tissue office in Toronto are putting together a package including turkeys, Royale paper products and gifts for her two boys.
"We were really inspired by her goodwill," said Kelly Westlake, a national account manager at the company. "This way we can see someone benefit from the good things she's done."
The employees aren't providing charity, she stressed, only a reward for her integrity.
The kids say they are proud of their mom and her honesty.
"Do not take anything that isn't yours and if you find something, you should turn it in," Chance Peliti said.
Peliti, meanwhile, is not sure how the reward will affect her welfare status.
But when she cracked open a fortune cookie before dinner, it read, "When you combine reflection with action, you will get good results."
finding $40,000 just lying on the ground and keeping it could get u into more trouble than it's worth ..
publicly donating it might actually be a much better idea .. or atleast making people believe you did
Unbelievable story.
Great thing about life - every once and a while it surprises the fuck out of you...

That sounds good ...
Hey, maybe I should call in sick for work tomorrow, bus to TO and tell TD Trust that it was my money, I lost my paycheque ...
GODDAMMIT!
(sarcasm)
My point is, they won't find the owner, they is inconclusive proof to anybody - and bank didnt lose it - the person who lost is not stupid, probably got more money, doesn't need any police attention ... if you know what I mean. The bank wont let go of the money now, and they will not donate all of it to charity(ies).
That lady probably has a good heart, but her IQ is gotta be low ... no offense or anything, but she was either afraid or something, but she didn't do the right thing ... you gotta agree.
Tell me what you would have done in her situation!!!?

LOL ...
it's cash ... real crispy 20 dollar bills ... they will cover my regular expenses for a long period of time like groceries, transportation, bills, rent, fees etc. I am not stupid enough to go to a bank and say, "I WOULD LIKE TO DEPOSIT 40,000 BUCKS!"
Even better, I could use the money to go to college and get a degree ...
I am not stupid you know - I wouldn't go around spending the money - I would only get what I REALLY need. If you only believe me. I'd put it into some good use.

i would have kept it, not used it until something came out in the news. if nothing came out in the news about it then i would use it bit by bit. like someone said, if it's just lost from a deposit or something then it is insured.

If I were to find that money and keep it. I'd open a Savings account and deposit small amounts over a few years.
Sneaky

Finder's keeper's, sucker! And how easy is it spending that much money? Very! Get a place downtown, pay around $700 rent (cash) each month, get a car for $4-5Gs (pay in, you guessed it, cash!)... get out of school and forget the degree, start my own business (cash is there again to cover all the startup costs, if any), and then pay the OSAP every month a grand or two to keep their mouth shut, while keeping the rest of the money for everyday expenses (booze, drugs, girls, etc). |
THe money was actually dropped off there by Securicor and the cops are actually investigating if it was an "inside" job.
As for myself I would prolly hand it in as well.I'm not THAT hard up for $$$ BUT if I was given $40,000 I would pay off my car loan & travel a bit and check out the big ass Trance parties in Europe...
That lady has great morals and that act alone teaches her kids a very valuable life lesson.
$40,000 or $1,000,000 the amount doesn't matter.
Sure with her social status one could argue that she could have used the money but in the end it would have still been wrong. What message would that have sent to her kids had she kept it?
That fact that the bank gave her $2000 just goes to show that her good samaritan deed wasn't without its just reward.
A nice jesture on the bank's part considering they didn't really owe her anything.
I think this lady is awesome!
On a darker note however, if she had kept the money it does now sound like the money is marked and she could be OWING $40,000...
even after giving up the 40K, TD gave her a 2,000 rewward for returning it, However the government told her that, that 2,000 would be taken out of her welfare cheques. So she even gave the reward money back! Mcquinty then invited her to parliament and promised that she would be able to keep the 2K and have a regular welfare cheque. I must admit, it feels good to know that people like this still exist.

Maybe SHE'S the drug dealer, and instead of laundering the money and getting into trouble with Revenue Canada, she gave it away.
