CDJ 800 vs SSL?

Am I missing the point?

You can pick up Serato Scratch Live for the same price as 1 cdj 800. Now surley SSL is going to be the more worthwhile option (provided you allready have a laptop)?

SSL gives u practically 2xcdj's. Obviously without the clever effects of the cdj 800.

Which do you think the better option would be? Is it worth having the clever looping of the cdj's or the vinyl emulation of all your tracks on two decks?

I think you are missing the point, although your personal preference is up to you.

I didn't buy the CDJ-800 just so I could emulate vinyl for cheap. I bought it because it is one of the best CD players on the market. The vinyl is an added (albiet very important) bonus.

The point isn't trying to 'emulate' vinyl, the point is to make music.

Besides, maybe I'm alone here (I doubt it), but I'd much rather be manipulating CDs, knobs, switches and buttons than a mouse and keyboard. I guess the difference is that I prefer a stand-alone unit, a set that I can just plug in and play, rather than messing with a computer.

Don't forget that by getting a CDJ you'll get an extra input source so you can do things like layering and three-way mixing. You won't get this advantage from using SSL with two TT's.

in my world, hardware will always have the edge on software, simply because you can use 2 hands, and press buttons and twist knbs etc. fuck clicking a mouse

If you are planning on playing out, the cdj's are the way to go unless you want to devote a laptop computer to SSL.

this is another one of those sketchy things.


It really depends on how far you wanna push it cause tbh most people who so far have gotten FS SSL etc tend to barely use them.

I'm not discrediting the units they are good but are too much of a novelty and it's hard to justify the inconvenience of carrying a laptop around etc ...

Obviously these are all matters of personal preference but in the long run I doubt you'll get the sufficient use out of them.

If you were to be going on tour and wanted to showcase your own work then I'd say way to go.


At this stage going cd makes the most sense across the whole line.

I think the larger issue over carrying a laptop (which is easier than records IMO) is the setup/breakdown time and effort required to hook up these units. I have FS but when I go to spin at the club on open decks night where I only have half an hour and it is really hard to get to the back of the mixer I just bring my records.

I have SSL and CDJs. If I had to ditch one it would be the CDJs.

With SSL you don't need to touch the computer. You can scroll and select songs with the vinyl. If you don't want to do it that way you can use keyboard commands to select a track and put it on the deck.

Either way, I think it's easier than flipping through vinyl or a book of CDs.
