Fantino to step down as Toronto chief Feb. 28, 2005

CANADIAN PRESS

Toronto police Chief Julian Fantino, a rumoured contender for the provincial post of commissioner of emergency management, said today that he has talked with government officials about taking the job.

"I obviously have had some dialogue," Fantino said when asked if he's been approached about replacing outgoing commissioner Dr. James Young.

"I'm not about to fade away. I feel very strongly that my skill, my talent, my contacts and my ability to solve problems . . . would be useful still."

But Fantino, who steps down as chief on Feb. 28, stressed that nothing is confirmed.

"It's an undone thing," he told a news conference. "There's been no absolute anything."

Premier Dalton McGuinty has refused to comment on published reports that Fantino could assume the role, saying only that his government has "had a very good working relationship with the chief in the past."

The commissioner's position opened up last week when Young announced he would be leaving the provincial government in January to become special adviser to federal Public Safety Minister Anne McLellan.

The Toronto Police Services Board decided last summer not to renew Fantino's contract as chief.

"I would want to continue in public service somehow," Fantino said.

"Public safety is in my blood."

They are thinking of hiring him as provincial safety /emergency director - which might not help edm at all. He would tighten provincial laws up quicker than a jackrabbit runs!

Are you talking about the famous HANGER? That was Liquid A. when Stevie Hyper D died. (RIP to the best jungle MC)

If your talking about the Hanger, we can fill it ... but the entire air base field (Like the SARS concert), no way.

i honestly think that clubbing has changed and even if we can get 'massives' organized its just not going to be the same.

sure it may be huge, but will the vibe the the same? thats the question. hopefully the bigger this dance thing gets, the more inquisitive and friendly people we get checking it out, and not the rude and shovy bastards who just want to be part of the underground.

the only bad news about fantino stepping down, is that he seemed like the only person in the police force who gave a rats ass about police corruption and racial profiling. with him stepping down, i hope a responsible and ethical person takes his place.

Some are, I'm certain. However there is an underlying "cow boy" / "above the law" attitude within the TPS.
