India pakistan in cricket is mainly instigated by political issues since the two countries are always on uneasy terms and the masses often view cricket matches(given that its by far the most popular sport in both countries) as a religious victory more than a sporting one.

australia vs england and new zealand are also big rivalries in cricket ...

Glasgow Celtic vs Glasgow Rangers (The Scots/Glaswegians TAs here can explain it)

Liverpool Vs Manchester United
The most successful club in English football vs the most popular and successful team of the 90s in England, not to mention they are only 30 miles apart, and on a bad note there were numerous street battles between both sets of fans in the 80s. Stanley knives, knuckle busters, Dr Martens boots & ammonia spray.

Liverpool Vs Everton
Back in the late 19th century. Everton use to play on Liverpool's current home Anfield. Everton were the tenants, though they had rent paying problems, so the Landlord kicked them off, and they moved a few tiny miles to Goodison Park. The problem now was, the landlord didn't have anyone using Anfield, so he created Liverpool FC. The rest they say is history. In the 80s, it use to be considered the friendliest competitive derbies on and off the pitch, as they dominated England though since they've both fallen into decline its gone bitter between them.

The last old firm match was particularly bad, but tbh there has been a few years passed where there has been little or no incident on old firm match days.

Glasgow is a city that has always been divided by religion due to the huge number of irish that descended on the city during the troubles in ireland in the 1800's.

Rangers was already an established club when celtic was founded in 1888 by an Irish Catholic priest and a group of Irish businessmen as a charitable trust to raise money to help the poor Irish immigrants in the East End of Glasgow. Due to the division of the city and the way celtic was brought about, catholics usually support celtic and protestants usually support rangers - and SOME 'supporters' use religions and football as an excuse for fighting.

The old firm was at it's worst in the 70's and 80's. It''s calmed down a lot since.
