check out the audio technica ATH-A900s. you can only get them imported from japan but they are supposed to be amazing. they look beautiful too. i think audio technica make some of the most stylish looking headphones ive seen.

http://www.audiocubes.com/product_r..._Headphone.html

you should be able to buy them there. as far as i know its the only place you can buy them outside of japan. i want a pair. but i blew my christmas money on an access virus

Posted by Infect_Insect on Dec-15-2004 10:31:

my aunts in singapore... so im getting these cans as a christmas gift.. will read on the audio technica.. thanks bud.

Posted by Derivative on Dec-15-2004 10:32:

oh yea, apparantely they are supposed to blow the v700s out of the water. and pretty much everything else in that price bracket.

Posted by Derivative on Dec-15-2004 10:50:

thats a shame about them breaking. after hearing about these headphones the ATH A500 is the only one i want. im on a strict budget otherwise id go for the A700 or A900. they have new ones on audio cubes but they are EXPENSIVE. like all of their headphones the new ones look sexy too. im a sucker for good looks

Maybe also look at the Stanton 3000s, the design is similar to the Sonys, the hinge is supposedly made of better and thicker plastic, and the sound very comparable.

I'm seriously thinking of making these my next headphones, hopefully for christmas. I'm not saying get them cos i don't have them myself, but I reckon they are worth the look.

They receive a favourable review here:

I was thinking about getting another pair of the 700's... but I dont know if i will be ass lucky this time!

No you won't.

The V700 is an excellent headphonie if you're checking out the looks and the sound quality (both marvellous). However, the V700 (AND the V500) have a construction error in a tube next to your earpad. As soon as you put the tube under pressure (e.g. you put it on your head, or you put something else between the earpads) it will wear and crack eventually. This is unevitable. A V700 with a normal user will last about 2 to 4 years.

IF you want a Sony headphone which DOESN't crack, look at either the V600 or the V900. They have an identical housing (the drivers are different), excellent sound quality and they don't have the breaking tube that the V500 and V700 have.

I totally disagree with the recommendation for the MDR-V600. That headphone is one of the worst-sounding headphones that I've ever heard, particularly for its $100+ retail price. In fact, it isn't worth more than $20 as far as sonics are concerned.

And I also agree with the design (or more specifically, manufacturing) problems with the MDR-V500DJ and the MDR-V700DJ.

dj Vash did u mean v6? cos yeah iv been told to STAY AWAY from the sony v600 at all costs...

thanks for ur suggestion derivative.. will check em out fo sho

I would get the stanton 3000's if youre that set on that sort of look/design.

The hinge is stronger than sonys, but i hear the headband can be touchy if you have a larger head.

They are cheaper than the 700's, and have better sound.

Posted by Infect_Insect on Dec-15-2004 18:35:

hmmm, the stanton sounds interesting.... can anybody vouch that the sound quality on the stanton 3000 is superior to the v700s ?

@Derivative the audio technica ATH-A900s, is close to 50 bux more than the sony's sure do look sweeeeeeet

i know. if you cant afford them get the cheaper ATH-A700s. they look the same. have a slighter lower frequency response. 50 bucks cheaper. or save yourself another 50 bucks and get the ATH-A500. ATH-A500s cost $105 USD. they are the best pair of monitor headphones you can get for a hundred dollars. period. all of them are supposed to blow the sony's out of the water. nobody ever has anything bad to say about them. look at audio cube's audiophile section - practically all of audio technica's headphones are in it. read some of the reviews too, i think they have a 100% record on that site or thereabouts which is pretty mental. the sound isolation is better than the sonys because the pads are huge, they dont snap as easily as the v700s. in my opinion they also look cooler. probably the coolest looking pair of monitor headphones ive seen. i think ill try to scab the A500s for christmas even though ive got no money. im counting on a few christmas cards with cash in the envelope. c'mon immediate family - dont let me down this year!

Posted by tu_face on Dec-16-2004 14:20:

bleh, i will always be a sennheiser man now if you think the sound quality in the mdrv700 is good (which i don't) then cop a load of the hd280's or hd25's

but yeah, if you are bothered about the way they look (which i'm not) then the hd280's are not what you want, although the hd25's look ubercool, with a price tag to match.

Posted by Derivative on Dec-17-2004 05:07:

eheheh. you sony and sennheiser people are gonna be pleasantly surprised if you ever gets your grubby little mits on a pair of ATH-A700s.

i am in the process of writing seasons greetings cards to all immediate family. let the cash flow in (fingers crossed). those A500s will be mine! mwaha!

Damn it, ive been looking into those phones, and now i really really really really want them.

I dont think theres anywhere that carries them in canada though, and its not worthwhile having them shipped here.

Posted by Derivative on Dec-17-2004 19:52:

you can only get them from japan. pretty much the only site that sells them is audio cubes cuz they try to find hard to find electronics gear from japan and export it to other countries. i dunno about their amps and stuff but alot of people say they have ordered headphones from them and not had to pay import tax. hence im getting a pair of A500s since i cant afford studio monitors right now.

I've had my MDR-V700DJs for 3+ years and they have been falling apart but they're troopers and work great...

1) the hinges cracked after about a year...zip ties fixed that
2) fake leather started cracking and falling off, but they're still just as comfortable, and although theres a little less isolation they work fine (only the right side is cracking anyway)
3) in a drunken state I accidentally snapped off the plug, but a $3 replacement from Radio Shack works fine...

Arrow 10x everybody...

derivative, wish i had posted this a lil earlier & gotten your advice... those ATH-A700s really seem sweeeeeeeeeeeet !! my v700 has been paid for in full, just spoke with my aunt... so thats it for now... will have em by the weekend.
