Subwoofers just supply more bass, that's all.

If you use the speakers for monitoring, it's a bad idea to buy a subwoofer, because it would destroy the 'natural' sound.

If you think your sound is missing the 'oomph', a subwoofer can do magic.

You can often save some money in the process when purchasing an active speaker ( or sub ) compared to purchasing the cabinet and the speaker separate. But that's not always the case!

Other factor will be that active's are easier to transport as it's an all inclusive box and transporting speakers + separate amps can be an annoying thing to do.

Only true limitation you'll ever come accross is that they aren't of the highest Wattage on the market but in most cases sufficiently enough for most uses pro and amateur.

Other side factor is if the active speaker has a component that breaks you are left out of the whole thing, either by not fixing it because the costs would be superior to a replacement or because you could not use a temporary fix in event of a repair ( replacing temporarely the amp or cabinet ).

Lastly I would honestly recommend them for mobile applications but if you're going for a permanent install it truly shouldn't matter and I'd advise going with the Amp + Cabinet purchase instead.

Btw this whole post may be totally irelevant as I'm not even sure what your question was ...

is it worth getting actives or not?

If the question was is it worth getting a sub .... well then yes in most cases it will be, but you'll have to learn how to use it in moderation and it will also bring drastically more bass which can be a good/bad thing.

Sorry I'm going off on a tangent

he wants to know if he should get a sub for his studio?

There's no real answer to that yes and no.

Using a sub in a studio you'll not want it on at all times.

If he's working on dance stuff well he's never going to know the true potential of his track until it's been tested in a club environment with proper bass levels.

If used in studio where he produces I recommend using it ONLY for reviewing purposes at the most.

Yep , like I thought...I had no answer aswell and your answer quite sums it up well...

Thanks,

In most cases sound will never be close to a club setting with the sub in the studio or not so battling in that direction is tricky.

If he:
1. has sufficient power from current monitors then go with the sub
2. needs more power overall then go with the active monitor of higher wattage

But you'll only gain precision in using a sub really ( sound ( hertz ) wise but not particurlaly level ( db ) wise as you could be setting subs too high ( db ) and get unrealistic review sessions.

It's tricky lol

from your friends msg it sounds like he was considering getting a crappy sub ( either getting the sub or spending triple in an active monitor ) .... I'd advise against that.

If he was only djing I'd say go monitor cause getting the volume could be more essential but for producing get the sub instead I guess

I had a chance to play some house & club music on a big home system with a 10" active subwoofer, might have been a Velodyne, in one of those audio rooms in a store. It sounded great, although the bass was more mellow and not as punchy as in a club. Still very nice, when we turned off the subwoofer it was nowhere near as cool sounding.

I'd like to get one for house parties and general listening (not a monitor or for pro music production) but I'm already getting noise complaints from the house next door.
