Athon 64: what do you think?

Anyone you have an athlon 64? What are your opinions? I plan on getting a laptop in the next 3 weeks, preferrably one with an athlon 64(I have xp 64 on a disc to install when I get the laptop). I'll be gaming a little and doing some minor production with it, as well as school work. Also, I could use some suggestions as to which laptop I should get as well. I'm thinking of getting an acer ferrari 3200, but I'm up for any suggestions.

Athlon 64's own everything. Well, the S939's do.

they all do really, alot of current games(HL2), have moved alot of the strain off of the GPU or Graphics Card, to the processor, which makes a faster proccesor actually relevant for gaming, unlike the last 5-7 years where it really hasnt mattered that much, I have so much to upgrade on my box(GPU, RAM, HDD, case) that makes me getting a new CPU/mobo combo irrelavent for now. but they are worth the extra money.

Whats really nice about the athlon 64 is it's memory controller is built in the cpu itself instead of the northbridge. The evolution is kind of like what happened to cache memory and math co-processor years ago.

But as of now, my pc still pwns considering i built it over a year ago w/ the p4-2.4c that was the overclocking beast thats cheap.

Now, for good overclockers for the money, i would throw my cash at the Winchester 3000+ or 3200+

I have a Athlon 64 3000+...just waiting for the new PCI-E motherboard from ASUS to finally come in, and get my Geforce6600GT and i'm set

Planning on doing some overclocking, of course. I've heard that you can bump a 3000+ to 3500+ speeds, if not more.

You gonna do SLI w/ the 6600gt?? Crap, it's been years when i was sporting a sli voodoo2 pci setup, but it feels like last year.

I think i'll keep my asus p4p800 2.4/3.02ghz setup just a while longer till the 6800gt goes down to $250 or maybe i'll wait for the dual core cpus to come out from either amd or the new G5, since im now so use to Hyperthreading, i just can't enjoy a single cpu or a pc w/o HT.

Hyperthreading? What is that anyways?

And yea, I'm definately gonna SLI 2 6600GT's. I was originally hoping for a 6800 PCI-E...but those are just "paper launch's", I haven't seen ANY anywhere, even though I know MSI, Leadtek and BFG all have PCI-E, SLI-ready 6800 cards.

BTW, got my Motherboard in yesterday

We'll see. I'm definately more impressed with their design, and packaging than MSI's. Tomorrow I'll see how well installation and set up goes. *crosses fingers*

I've recently bought a motherboard kit with the Athlon64 3000+, so I'll be buying the rest of the pieces in the next couple of weeks. I've also got XP 64 on CD waiting to be installed, so has anyone tried it out yet?? I wouldn't mind knowing a few of the bugs and whatnot before I install it incase it all goes a bit tits up. You can download it from Microsoft over HERE.

Let us know if you have any troubles!!
