Preparing a Trance 90 min set.....

Ok From Experience , Can any one tell me what i should be starting with and ending with. I have often heard the expression, oh that tune is a set finisher e.g - 3 drives - sunsett in ibiza. Can some one please tell me how i should start and how to finish. I have 90 min set lines up for me on friday night and i wnt to make the best of it. Any suggestions please boys ? This will be a lot off help to me, thank you.... Greetz J-One

ok dude, this is how i do it. 1st trackis one of your best trax....
eg... Marco V - Simulated, Yahel - Voyage, something like that, so that the crowd are immediately into it. its in their face... then u keep em going with the kick ass trax.. then end it off with another kick ass track.. like PvD - For an Angel, Mauro Picotto - Baguette, well something along those lines is what i do. well hope ive helped and enjoy..... and pls let us know how it goes.

Dude You Got Sweet Taste ! That Would Be A Killer Entrance. I Will Bare Tht In Mind, A Good Start Is Needed, Its Just How To Slowely Pick Up Or Lower The Tempo Towards The End Of The Set. Do I Pick It Up To Banging Tance, Or Lower It To Progressive/ Uplifting Trance ?

Well dude, i personelly like to take it to real HARD stuff.... umm Picotto style then bring it back to some trance... but look, whatever u like, just play at home and see what goes well with what, and listen to PvD, Tiesto sets, listen to their track selection... one i love is PvD @ MayDay 2000.... awesome set... all in all just have fun...

IMO start a little more chillin, like uplifting then just BANG IT OUT for the next 75 minutes, only to slow it down @ the end.

or save your killer most banginest track till the very end. Drop it and kill em all with it.

that energy curve shit is boring(start low, build energy to high near end, then lower it down. NO....start low, get high, keep it high, let down a bit)

Just be you. Feel the crowd, and play what you think they need. Don't plan it out, or else it'll have a distacted feel. I also wouldn't want to start out with one of your most killer toons, 'cuz you then will have a problem keeping the vibe that high and that killer.

OK Boys , Sorry For All The Questions In All But This Is My Very First Club Set. Now Its Just The Question Of Planning A Set Or Just Feeling The Crowd And Playing The Right Tunes At The Right Moment. What Can You Say OIn That ?

The first club set I ever did I had all planned out before I got there. I practised it in my bedroom beforehand, and everything. It was quite a nice, uplifting set with tracks like Perpetuous Dreamer, things like that.

When I got there however, I was there all night (I was last set), and I just felt that it was entirely the wrong set to be playing. The crowd had ben through an hour of prog house, plenty of trance, and I just felt they needed something a bit more banging. So, I slammed on some kickin Hard House and they just went completely mental.

Just goes to show, you should never plan your set; just be prepared to play anything that will get the crowd going in the right direction.

Yeh man, definently play the crowd... Cos if u get them going u will definently be playing there agian and again... As TJTJ said, u can never plan a set. always comes out complete opposite.. =P 4 me anyways.

you can have some ideas of tunes you wanna throw in but you have to "feel the crowd" and then they will inturn feed you you want to play it sound strange but any dj wil agree with me just pay attention to them and see what gets them moving and go with it and last but nnot least have fun if your having a good time the crowd can tell and they will have a good time. and pesonally i wouldnt throw in anthem after anthem give some variation and let your style show. i remeber my first set was at after hours club where i live and i went expecting to play alot of uplifting but it totally turned into a hard banging progressive set and the crowd went nutz. so goodluck have fun and relax get into the groove!

The first thing that U must do is planning the order of the songs
So that they`ll be harmonical... If U want the set to be the most
professional it can be you`ll have to learn the key to the bass-line
of your songs and plan the order by it... this kind of mixing is
called "Harmonic mixing" and once you`ll learn the idea your sets
will reach perfection!!!

IMO it all depends on a number of factors like what time is it and what was played before you and so on. Don't start out too low because you want them to know that you are now in the DJ booth. As long as you know every track in your record box very well, there shouldn't need to plan the set.

Planning sets and using harmonic mixing is fine. As long as you are making a mixtape or a CD. But you shouldn't do this in a club. Just imagine, if you planned a set of nice, melodic, chilled trance, and the guy before you plays some banging hard techno or something, what the fuck are you supposed to do? Everyone's just going to walk out or go and sit down if you start playing melodic stuff. It might be the tightest, most professionally mixed set in the world but if the crowd don't want to hear it then you're shafted.

And plus, harmonic mixing is wasted on a large club sound system anyway. Not to say it sounds crap, but it just doesn't sound any better than non-harmonic mixing. Save this for mixtapes etc. that will be played on a home hifi or something where you will notice the benifits.

ok boys...set whent perfect ! As it was my first ever club set i had to plan it all out. Its just as well i took 2 hours worth of records as-well ,because the DJ after me was 30 mins late, and if thats not good enough, i got the set from 10pm-12pm which was very nice as the DJ before me was very dark/prgoressive. So i just fired away with chilled trance, into Trance. I dropped Marco V - Indicator ..and.. The Green Martian - Industry , as my last tunes. I didnt stick about after my set, but i beleive the DJ after me was all Hard House so it couldent have whent better. Thanks for the advice boys, i Beleive it hepled me a little , Respectz !

To Be Perfectly Honest I Think I only Looked Up At The Crowd Once Or Twice. This May Be very Wrong, But My Head Was Down Focusing On The Tables All Night. I Was Taking No Chances. I Will Gradually Relax More In My Next Club Set Which Is On Saturday 10th Nov. Cant Wait !
