I was looking through my cd's(Paul Oakenfold)

I have a shit load of oakenfold cd's. The man has some brilliant mix cd's.
Tranceport
Another World
Travelling
Global underground NYC

These cd's bring back a lot of memories....... Im sorry to say this but thinking back makes me remember how good the scene was and how crap it is now... Before mp3 was wide spread some of the tunes could only be heard from the big djs. And now with the advent of mp3. We all hord our precious tunes and play them repeatly on our ipod while going to work or on our computers while we study. Sometimes i think we get so hung up on tunes we forget to have a good time. I miss the days of stepping into a dark warehouse to hear a dj ive never heard before or one i do know but have no idea what tunes he is gonna play. Then be completely blown away by the music ive never heard or having that special moment during the night where he plays the tune ive been dying to hear since my last night out...

the cds were verry good(tracklisting wise), but the mixing wasnt to great...just listen to tranceport, even if its in my top 5 of all time...

but i know what your saying about the music, maby made @ spirit will change some of this...

Yup Oakey has had some awesome compilations in his day...

yeah true.. i think he got a little lost with ibiza (i thought that cd was arse), but great wall was ok, and creamfields this year kinda put him back

I like the first disk of the ibiza disk with radiohead and that plump dj's remix....

sorry to hear you think "the scene" has gone to crap. Being a EDM junkie for over a decade, i think its still getting better and better.

"the scene" or life for that matter is what you make of it i guess.


P.S. i agree that those cd's are brilliant.

Ive never been to critical of a dj's mixing IMO long as the flow keeps going i have no gripes... Besides the only person who impresses me mix wise is Sasha the man is a mixing genious if any of you can listen to these sets...

I used to go out, just to go out to hear electronic music. I didnt matter what variety Breaks/DnB/trance/house anything long as it was electronic and for the most part i had a awesome time.. Now adays the scene is soo clicky and imo no better than any other music scene. You have your people who think prog(i hate the fucking word prog, i mean say it outloud it sounds fucking ridiculus, say progressive house) is better then any other form of music or more intelligent. I mean wtf does style of music have to do with inteligence? People fucking argue whose the better the better dj or why "This dj has sold out". I just dont get it anymore. I go out to clubs now(Crobar, ikon, spirit) I get stepped on by drunks or i have to witness greased up guidos do the punch without their shirt on. Or then we have the asian circles of people ages 30+ doing these wierd things cuzz their all fucked up. I mean have you seen them when they shake each other thats fucking hilarious(i know all you NYCer's know what im talking about)...... Maybe im just jaded, i dont know...

Im not saying i have a problem with the evolution of the music just the evolution of the scene...

yeah.. i hear ya.. its never gonna be the same.. thats how it was, and this is what has become.. i personally dont mind an mp3-less world... yes it does help an unknown artist and what not but its the fucking quantity of it....-there are so many tracks outhere, and almost all of them can be found on mp3.. if you have too much of anything, you lose the appreciation of the product... let alone mp3s are FREE. and as for djs, because you dont have to pay shit to download your 'sought out choon' theres no need to dig for vinyl, so all these djs are buying cdjs and final scratch and playing a dominent mp3 sets if not 100% mp3 sets. i believe that ; yeah playing a few mp3s in your sets are cool but when it gets comlpetely mp3 driven, its fucking lame.. u can do that at home, house parties, spinning to your friends or whatever but at gigs i think you should represent properly... the formats : vinyl, LEGAL purchased mp3s, CD singles, unsigned promo cd-r, and maye couple or even a few 'downloaded mp3s' should be used IMHO.

now the djing world has become somewhat like, 'who can hunt down the latest "hot" new choon' its so fucking repetetive its no longer intriguing. i think that ppl should stop sweatin' the cliche and come from your own indivdual hearts. this might sound like babblin to some of you but hopefully to others it might make sense..

my bad fr0st for slightly* going off topic but wanted to share my thoughts... as for the scene being not what it used to be, we have to face it and deal with it we're still in the scene now so as long as were involved, we are the ones who should strive to make at least a little bit of a difference. i sure contribute to edm scene in nyc and will continue to do so as long as my heart is there.

I think Digweed's mixing is flawless but his style doesn't interest me. In my opinion, it's hard to compare to trance guys because it's more of a quick transition with them. I think Cokenfold himself would tell you that isn't his strong point (and I think it's worse now).

GU NY is my fav Oaky CD. First trance CD I ever bought actually. I called him Paul Oakenfield for like 2 weeks. I guess I was a moron.

I don't know much about Oakey... just that I enjoy some of his older tsuff and that he looks weird now. Anyway, I love his Creamfields mix...

Ehh... about going out, I don't even wanna go out half the time now if I know I can't get wasted that night. It's sad, really... Then again I'm not 21 and can't go to "better" clubs like Cielo and Crobar.. if I could go to those, I'd have no problem "going for the music" to see people like Sasha and Zabiela... as it is, the music mostly bores me. Fuck DJ Mag ratings, those popular DJs are the same shit over and over... I go see them just to hang out with friends, mostly. But what can ya do... I'll be in Europe soon, let's see how the club scene is there

on a related note, i'm listening to his homelands 1999 set... mint!

I feel the exact same way bro.... Everyone is at a loss with mp3 it will never be the same... I remember sitting at the record shop for hours listening to all the new records...... Now i shop juno from the comfort of my home....

Cokenfold was king in 1999. I started liking trance because of him and even went to London just to see him spin. It was awesome back then. I agree that I didn't have 1000 MP3 mixes back then and was ecstatic to hear so many new choons.

I really liked his Goa mixes too including Fluoro. And the orange Pete Tong Essential Selection mix. Got that in London then...

But I still have plenty of good nights here in NYC. I think New Yorkers are a little too spoiled many times. Living in some place like Seattle like I did, I was barely able to see anybody once a year. Just because of that, it was like a HUGE deal and build up.

I don't know, going to Crobar to see Zabiela (when I didn't know how he sounded) was a great moment. Really surprised me and made it a great night out.

My buddy was the door guy at Spirit for a long time and knows the owners of Crobar and he can testify to knowing what Paul Oakenfold has done before gigs. Believe me or not. What I'm saying is that his performance is not what is used to be.

It's like someone getting defensive about me calling out Jason Giambi for doing steroids.

you dont get the point... Personaly i dont care what a dj does in his spare time.. That is his bussiness there is no need to bring it up...

If you think he just started or any other dj for that matter with few exceptions doesnt do drugs you got another thing coming...

Thanks for the schooling. But there are levels. ie: Aerosmith. Casual drugs users... become famous. Make more money, do more heroin, coke, etc. Career turns to shit. Stop drugs. Revive career.

I was just about to say something of the same nature.

I've never known a time as good as now as far in regards to the scene. (Luckily, we have yet to see any serious Rave Act venue casualties.)

Sure I miss warehouse parties and such, but if you know where to look you can still find them. They might not all be large to massive 1000+ person events, but they're still there nonetheless. They're definitely here in Baltimore.

As far as I know, the scene is thriving - but I guess it's all a matter of perception.

(Or perhaps someone's just jaded?)
