upgrade from MDR-V600 phones to HD-280, worth it?

am I going to notice a difference at all between the MDR-V600s and the HD-280s?

I spend most of my time listenting to my computer or cds, so I don't have any professional equipment.

EDIT: yep, I have the MDRV600s, not the MDRV6s

Posted by Freak on Dec-26-2004 01:02:

that is a downgrade IMHO

eta:assuming you are talking about the V6, and not the V600s- If its the V600s then i agree with slim down below \/

Posted by dj chex on Dec-26-2004 01:07:

are you talking about the v600 or the v6? there different types of phones. If it's the v6, imo the 280 just a little better, but if it's the v600, then the 280 is much better.

Actually, anything is an improvement over the Sony MDR-V600's. I've personally heard those particular Sonys - and they're by far the worst $100 pair of headphones of any type that I've ever heard. In all my years of experience with headphones, what I heard out of those Sonys is very consistent with what I had heard from a $20 pair of headphones. Only those particular Sonys don't cost just $20 - they cost much, much more than that!

yes, looks like I have the 600s, thanks for the help I will order the 280s tomorrow.

Posted by TranceSpeeder on Dec-26-2004 04:22:

i hear that even mdr v500 are better then mdr v600.

follow up:

phones came today and DAMN these 280s kick ass compared to my sonys, thanks for the help

u should break 'em in for a bit. they sound even better

Posted by trance85 on Jan-03-2005 06:44:

How bad are the sony mdr-v600s in comparison to the hd280s, I went to circuit city and a few other places to see if they had hd280s, but all I could find were the sony mdr-v600s, so I bought em. I'm not sure how good the hd280s are at blocking out external noise, but it kind of bothers me that I can hear music from my computer when the volume is relatively low on the comp. speakers when I'm wearing hte v600s.

Posted by dj chex on Jan-03-2005 06:50:

well, the 280's isolate noise very well. Also they sound quality imo is among the best in it's price range. The only disadvantage to the 280s is it's headband is known to crack and break. No biggie for me b/c i can still use the headphones just fine. As for the v600s, they didn't sound very clear or accurate to me, so i didn't buy them, i actually spent less money at the time and bought a pair of v500s. Those sounded better to me at the time and also lasted me years before i gave them to my dad whom being a postal worker, was able to kill them.

IIRC Circuit City does NOT carry the Senn HD280s. Best Buy does sell the HD280s - but they don't stock them in their stores; they only sell them through their Web site, and they charge full list price ($199.99).
In other words, Best Buy charges at least double what most other resellers charge for the HD280s.

Posted by tu_face on Jan-03-2005 15:03:

in my opinion, the sony's sound muddy, particularly when you compare them to the sennheisers. you will be glad you bought the hd280's, the sound quality is amazing as is isolation.

as for the cracking thing, yeah it is an issue but if you look after them they don't. i will be the first to admit i strained mine to much, mainly through using them (and letting lots of other people use them) whilst very very twatted.

still lovin' the cans as for pricing,

I didn't see them on circuit citys web site, or in the store(may have missed them),

best buy has them on their website for $199 USD

reading through the headfones sticky thread

www.djmart.com has them for $89

I got mine from www.jr.com for $80 with free shipping (they now want $5 for shipping)

I think I also read about a member who sells them for about $75

and from what I understand these are cheaper in Europe

edit: found a couple better prices thanks to tvmann's post

www.etronics.com $70

www.ecost.com $99 with $10 overnight shipping or free standard shipping

for those is England

Nope. The HD280s are actually more expensive in Europe than in most US stores. Most European resellers charge close to full list price for those 'phones, while most US resellers are selling them for close to Sennheiser USA's minimum advertised price (for the HD280s, that minimum advertised price is half of the MSRP, or $99.95). Strange for Sennheiser, but true.

Oops, double post!

Posted by Tegu on Jan-04-2005 16:16:

I got my 280s at Guitar Center for $90. The Senns are alot cheaper in America because everyone is hooked on the Sonys. In Europe people know that Sennheiser is much better than Sony so they price shows.

Posted by Neeldan on Jan-15-2005 17:12:

Guys I've got question. I'm thinking about buying 280's or HD25's. I've heard that HD25's are better than 280's ??????. In my local dealers there aren't HD25's and I don't know when they will be.
Suggestions ?
Thx

Posted by djtrinity on Jan-16-2005 17:23:

this is another thing were u have to use both and see what u like better!

Posted by vhx1 on Jan-18-2005 04:04:

HDJ1000's SUCK. Don't bother with them. Get the MDR-V6 or the HD-280s

Posted by Greedy on Jan-18-2005 05:12:

i would get the hd 25's over the 280s. The 280s have a tendency to crack under the headband.

Posted by Vlad on Jan-18-2005 07:36:

HD25's blow just about every headphone out the water.

Posted by tu_face on Jan-18-2005 09:33:

be sure not to get the hd25sp. they have the shit thin plastic rigid headband instead of a proper headband
