Any veterinarians in here? *UPDATED*
My neighbours dog who managed to get out of the grden was hit by a speeding car earlier this evening. I'm a 1st year Animal behaaviour student and im really worried about the little guy.
He was a jack russell terrier, he got hit by a car doing bout 35mph. He ran about 30 ft from where it happened and collapsed. I had to lay him on a towell and had 3 of us lift him and keep his back as straight as possible. Then lay him in the car, kept his head covered so it would calm him, then grabbed a hot water bottle so he would stay warm to the vets. There was nothing else i could do really... he wasnt bleeding so i didnt have to worry about haemorrhages. He had a little blood coming from the mouth but i couldn't tell if it was internal bleeding or if he had just bit his tounge from the car hitting him....basically i just treated him for shock as best i could whilst trying to be as quick as possible.
His body remained fairly stiff and he wasn't trying to get up which probably means he cannot feel his body...as most animals will try to look aat the area where the pain is coming from.
his breathing was fairly normal a short gasp 10 seconds apart. His eyes were slightly active (looking around a little) but not glazed or anything...
any professionals have any idea what his chances are?
man when i first clicked this link i thought you were asking about vegetarians...and then i started to read about a dead dog and i thought...what the hell...did someone eat a dog or something??!!
then i took a second look...
sorry to hear about your friends dog...
Don't know. That sucks!
What really bugs me is that the owners were saw he ws out of the yard and were just wlking down to the road to bring the dog back in....its not a main road....and the bloke who hit the dog didn't even stop!
He ran over the dog infront of the 16yr girl owners eyes and just kept on driving..... Just thinking about it fills me up with hate!
oh my god, i hate hearing shit like that. now i'm really sad. let us know if he is ok. call the vet and see what's wrong with him. did anyone get a good look at the driver and the car or license plate? i'd be on a mission to find that asshole and take a bat to his car. that's just so messed up...animals have a certain innocence that no one can duplicate...not even little kids. people who can run over a dog or whatever and just keep driving have no fucking compassion for anything.

CRITICAL CONDITION, he should be in ICU. his chances are very slim. most likely, euthanasia will have to be carried out if the x-rays show he is paralyzed. depending on how he was hit, if it was in the chest area, the pressure could have caused some bursting of blood vessels in the lung area/chest area causing blood to come out of his mouth. or it could be his tongue as you said.
hopefully, the little guy has been stabilized allowing for more tests, but his chances are still slim.

Thanks TVD....still no news on him yet...i dont think i should go over to my neighbours and ask if there dog is still alive...bit rude in a way.
The amount of blood from his mouth was minimal. What worried me abit about his breathing was the gasps 10 seconds apart....im worried he may have punctured his lung if he broke a rib in the crash. Any ideas on this?
these dogs and cars dont mix. my jack russel was hit by a car doing about the same speed several months ago. driver didnt stop. the good news about these dogs are they are amazingly resilant. there very muscular animals(probably because there so tense from being hyperactive) tho mine did lose an eye, it was the only injury she suffered. one or two inches lower or higher and she may have walked away unscathed. the dog should be okay, but you wont know unless you ask....
GIVE TRANCE A CHANCE....
IT STILL CAN BE...
GIVE TRANCE A CHANCE....
I just found out a minute ago that "Patch" died on the way to the vets. He died from internal injuries. I feel so shit now...i have tht feeling where i think (and believe) that its my fault. If i had checked where the blood was coming from i may have been able to do something to save him... it was kinda my responsibility... i dunno.
Either way....RIP Patch

Main killer of animals after an accident has happened can be the shock. Animals with shock will lose body temperature rapidly due to the slowing down of the heart. By providing a hot water bottle you are rising the animals body temperature and making the animal calmer and reducing stress levels which is importaant incase the animal is about to go into cardiac arrest.
