Southeast Asia Quake/Tsunami Donation Info

The eathquake/tsunami aftermath in South-central Asia and parts of Africa have left over 75,000 dead and countless others missing. It is hard for many of us to grasp the scope of this catastrophe - whether it be the grief from losing a loved one to the resources required by aid agencies to help deal with the aftermath.

Below are some organizations where you can donate - even if you can only afford a little, it all adds up in the end.

Red Cross - USA / CAN / UK / FRA / GER / NL / NOR / SWE / AUS / Other Country

Oxfam - UK

Unicef (select your country from bottom left)

Worldvision

Anonymous donations (via Amazon.com to Red Cross)

If you haven't already seen enough video footage and want want an idea of how quickly things happen - check these videos from Thailand -

just made my donation to the Australian Red Cross.

you don't need to be rich to donate, just human.

Posted by Ian on Dec-30-2004 09:48:

by teatime yesterday there had been 5 million raised from people here. It's a shame that all the people involved in wars of religion can't see how just being human is enough to pull everyone together regardless of race/faith.

If you go to that Amazon donation page and refresh a few times you can watch the donation total go up..earlier today it was nuts, like $1000/second.

Posted by montana on Dec-30-2004 10:14:

i donated 1000 swedish crowns yesterday, it was half of the cash i got for christmas but this is for a good cause

Posted by Tenshi on Dec-30-2004 10:48:

as i'm a student i don't have much money, but i donated half of the money i got for christmas!

I think in all its tragedy it's good to see nearly all people on this planet unite!

I hope my money will help lots of people! and i hope my government will make a huge donation too! because we wealthy states agreed not long ago to give 0,7% of the gross domestic product to underdeveloped country...never happend...i hope they now can make up for this never happend promise!
i don't lost anyone related to me in any form but i also cried couple of times over the last few days...such a tragedy!

we get cancelled (typo?) new year in a whole city here so they can give the money to the needed instead of fireworks.. best new year for me ever..

Posted by Skipper on Dec-30-2004 13:53:

There is going to be an event held in Toronto to raise funds for this cause - some of Toronto's most recognized DJs and promoters are on board. Please support this event if you can - info will be posted as soon as the details are confirmed.

Quite similar over here...

Singapore's main arts centre Esplanade said its New Year's Eve performance would now be a remembrance service for the hundreds of thousands killed by the waves spawned by the magnitude 9.0 quake in the seabed off Sumatra's western coast.
A minute's silence will be held at midnight instead of the traditional raucous countdown in the final seconds of the year, and donations will be collected from the audience for Red Cross relief operations, Esplanade Theatres On The Bay said.
A giant firework display has been cancelled.
"This year, in light of the tragedy unfolding around us, it would be more appropriate to usher in the new year in a more contemplative manner,'' the Esplanade said.
"The fireworks planned are best reserved for some other, more appropriate occasion in the future.''

It's so hard to imagine experiencing something like this.... Whenever I see the images or hear the numbers, I feel so helpless and I can't help but ask myself, why, why is it there and not here...it happens in a place where people already have nothing...no health insurance, no property insurance, no credit cards...
I'v been to that area of the world and the people are so down to earth and so warm and then something like this happens....
Donating helps me feel a connection because any piece of monetary currency might be one that literally saves a life........
remember that
