Nuno's NIghtclub opening TONIGHT

FINALLY! Nuno's Nightclub on 6th is opening tonight!

Me and their new resident DJ will be spinning popular trance and probably some house, but mostly trance :-D

Unfortunately, I don't nkow a lot of the details like their exact address, drink specials, cover charge, or closing time. I assume it will be opening around 9 PM and closing probably around 2 AM.

Nuno's is located on the right side of 6th street right after Neches.

Here's a pic I took of the club a couple weeks ago so you can see what to look for:

depending on how things unfold tomorrow i may just swing by for a visit to say hey to nuno.

Here's my quick take, based by a 30 minute stop-by tonight:
(& note, it was a Thursday, opening night, so I'll be kind. I was not exactly "dressed to impress" myself, so I'll go back on another night)

It's dead at the corner of Neches & 6th St. It's a prime location--we were talking to the bartender, there's been no other bar there for three years.

There was no cover charge tonight.

The club is two floors, downstairs with a lounge-area by a bar, & a back "danc-ish" area with black lights.

Upstairs is the DJ booth, a large dance floor, & spinny-multi-colored changing lights. I found the lights upstairs semi-epileptic--a bit too high octane for me. The sound system was loud, but brassy.

For the 30 minutes I was there, the music was way over on the "popular trance" side--kissing cousins of IvD or Sammy. Not my style. Hoyt, were you the first DJ (on til about 10:20) or the second guy?

In general, I'm not too fond of 6th St. Everyone there seems to be there to get drunk & get laid, in roughly that order. Or is a 47 year old tourist.

Eternal Night Club, which is opening up on Friday, is about 3 doors down on the same side of 6th St. It'll be interesting to have two EDM clubs in close proximity.

Sidenote: I saw "Harold & Kumar go to White Castle" earlier tonight. Very funny.

Yeah, I was the first DJ until around actually 8:30... I didn't spin much after that. Every once in awhile I got to blend in one track... OH YAY! Eternal ended up borrowing one of my CDJs and I went ahead and let them for about 2 hours since it wasn't like he let me spin anyways. I was told to only spin popular female vocal trance, but I didn't play DJ Sammy, blech. To get people to dance to trance, you have to play that old crap that Mega 93.3 used to play that people can recognize. You have to ease them into it. I mixed in some new fresh trance, along with some popular stuff from 2001 and 2002, when Mega was alive. To get an idea of what I'd spin if I had total control, download my new minimix 01 at www.djhoyt.com You see, clubs that play underground EDM don't last long at all. You need to get people in with Ian Van Dahl, and keep them in with new euphoric trance like Tension, Matanka, Alucard, etc.

Unfortunately, it doesn't look like I'll get to spin much here. I've been invited (after asking, lol) to spin some on NYE, but I have a feeling I'll be sitting around or dancing on occassion instead of spinning. I'm kind of his potty-break substitute. I know I'm a better DJ then this.. but until I can prove myself, this is how it's going to be. But I thought I already did that! I did get this one guy who came up and complimented my choice in music (for this one song I blended in... Dumonde vs. Lange - Memory) and said how he loves trance and used to spin as well. He asked if I was going to be there at NYE, so people like what I do! I just need an even bigger following. The "scene" can be so frustrating at times...

lol, at least it's not another hip-hop club... two dance clubs on 6th street... the last time that has happened was back in 2001... or earlier. So sad

who is the other resident...??

I know what you mean about the mainstream trance crap...
BUT.... NUNO loves the stuff. he tried to have a full on vocal trance night at the other nuno's and kept getting the same response.. there just isn't that much out there for vocal trance that sounds good...
there is only so many times in a night you can play castles in the sky..

Oh come on now! I love vocal trance and I think Nuno has some great tastes. He likes the new vocal trance I play too... like my current favorite Tension feat. Julie Harrington - Lost in You. The problem I had is I didn't get to play much, but hopefully that will change tonight. I know I'm good enough

hola hoyt. it was nice seeing ya again last night (nye). got to say hey to nuno and his son. was really showing up to see andres spin next door. they handed out some free carona's. that building actually houses the first club i went to wayyy back in 1991 (it was called RPM's back then....when the song 3am by KLF was popular). anyway, hope it works out for Nuno. it should definately be better than his previous loc. trance is very hard to promote. i wish all of you the best.

Its hard to have just a vocal trance night because tranceheads are very picky about the type of trance they like. Most don't like vocal trance, I can only think of 2 vocal tracks I really enjoy, I used to own both but I gave them to Dave because I don't spin trance in public. The mainstream can get into vocal trance but they're a fickle crowd that prefers Top40 music.

I hope everything goes well for Nuno's because having somewhere to go on 6th street besides Top 40 hip-hop clubs is cool. I'll try to check it out.

I have this great mental image of Zild spinning Vocal Trance in the privacy of his own home...

Second on the thumbs-up to non-hiphop alternatives.

Can't help but agree 100% with your take on things here mate. Vocal trance just ain't gonna draw a loyal crowd. You're right, the type of people that would like this kind of trance would probably just as soon have just as good a time at a top40 club. And as far as reaching an experienced trance-audience, they certainly aren't gonna go for a vocal trance night.

I don't know about anyone else, but when I play trance, I mix it up a little. You mix in the vocal tracks with the instrumentals and it comes out really good. And there is a huge difference between Top 40 and vocal trance. Like I love vocal trance and hate Top 40 music, lol. To say vocal trance lovers are just as shallow as Top 40 lovers isn't exactly true.

If I can get a fixed set time at Nuno's Nightclub, how many people could I get to come out and see me?

Hey, don't go spilling my secrets.

By the way, I'm now spinning at Eternal. The DJs there... you won't believe it, they can beatmatch! It's incredible! And like... they don't play Madison Avenue - Don't Call Me Baby and Daft Punk - Around the World over and over. I highly recommend checking out Eternal.

I should be spinning there next week by the way =)

Posted by Zild on Jan-23-2005 19:41:

Oh yeah but can they ride the pitch, scratch fluently, and beat juggle?

Posted by DJ Hoyt on Jan-23-2005 23:40:

No, not at all. They (I mean he) just uses the cross fader and just moves it from one side to the other and have the beats trainwreck.

IT'S AWESOME

Thats just not right.

I don't know why they're bothering paying a DJ if what they want is old random stuff randomly played. They should just get a MacMini and set it up in the DJ booth with iTunes, put it on Party shuffle with a bunch of over-rated dance tracks that are 4+ years old, set the blend to 10 seconds long, and boom! There's your Nuno's DJ.

Posted by nunosnightclub on Jan-25-2005 17:50:

ungratefull

Hoyt of all people !!!!!!!!
YOUR STOOPING THAT LOW TO TALK SHIT ABOUT THE CLUB.... I don't understand what the hell your up to. One thing for sure, not being gratefull for people getting you started is bullshit. I have alway's talked good about the music you play and i'm the one that asked JOJO to let you play because your music selection is real good.

Must say that I hold a lot of respect for Nuno, in particular for his willingness to give the old trance nation nights a go, and giving us all the experience of playing on a big system. You've gotta give him a break Hoyt, after all he is running a club for the sake of running a club, we must understand that.

Posted by tmft on Jan-25-2005 20:34:

yeah, hey--Nuno's isn't exactly to my taste, but like I said originally, it's nice to see non hip-hop.

I'll say the same thing I wanted to say to the guy that hated on the G & D show as "overrated" WITHOUT EVEN GOING TO THE SHOW--if people are dancing to it or having a good time, I'm not going to judge.

And I quote Marcus Aurelius:
"There was once a dream that was Rome, you could only whisper it. Anything more than a whisper and it would vanish. It was so fragile and I fear that it will not survive the winter."

So true, so true. This was brewing to be tremendous drama, but it can't be spoken of. You should simply sit back and watch. If at all possible, add fuel to the fire. Haven't I taught ya'll anything?....
