The Tsunami, Satellite Images, BEFORE AND AFTER



A satellite image taken Dec. 29, 2004, shows an overview of Aceh province in the western Indonesian island of Sumatra. The area absorbed the double shock of the world's worst earthquake in 40 years coupled with the resulting catastrophic tsunami



BEFORE: This detailed view of the northern tip of the island was taken on Jan 10, 2003



AFTER: A photo taken of the same area on Dec. 29, 2004, shows the extreme destruction caused by the earthquake and tsunami. On Thursday, Indonesian officials issued a new death toll of nearly 80,000 for that country alone.



BEFORE: This detailed view of northern Banda Aceh was taken on Jan. 10, 2003



AFTER: News services on Thursday reported that pilots in Sumatra had discovered about 28,000
more dead in Banda Aceh while dropping food to remote villages still unreachable by rescue workers.

AFTER: Some officials said there was dismal coordination among the Indonesian military, civilians and foreign governments. "We haven't gotten any help at all, nothing, said a resident who was camped out five miles from the airport in Banda Aceh.

AFTER: As of Thursday, several governments had pledged $500 million in emergency aid for stricken areas.

AFTER: On Wednesday, the Indonesian military finally reached the Sumatra town of Meulaboh, closest to the epicenter on the massive earthquake. A bulldozer dug a mass grave the size of a
swimming pool in which to pile corpses covered only by plastic sheets.

The images are shocking, i haven't seen this sort of distruction in years. This is trully horrible. I donated 100 dollars to UNICEF.

Great shots og..seen more recent video footage on tv today..the truth and scale of the disaster is amazing..26th dec total reported dead is 3500..now who knows..i still think its logistical help the region needs(as in military type operations)because the scale is so big for individual aid agencys to make an impact..many countries navys and military are now involved and thats what will make the difference..unfortunatly today helicopters were not allowed to fly due to bad weather for many hours

All the more reason the troops should be pulled out of Iraq and around the world. But partisan politics have no ear when it comes to the people.

Was truly a horrible act of Nature.
It's sad that it takes a catastrophe to bind us...

I was a memeber here at TA about 3-4 years ago. I was heavily active within the political threads, but soon found it to be non-constructive and pointless.

So now I return, and I must say, this issue is the only one that is sincerely worth mentioning. The worst part of it all, is that it happened to the nations worst off in this world. It disgusts me so deeply to see these already poverty stricken and less developed nations receive such a punishment, for what?
I truly hope that Asia can get back up from this, and for the hundreds of thousands of people that lost family, friends, homes, and more importantly, a sense and meaning to life.

Who exactly are we pointing fingers at?
If anything, be disgusted in the lack of promises kept in giving aid when countries jumped in to grab headlines saying they'd give millions to rebuild.
Care to guess how much of that has actually been given?

You misunderstood my statement. It was not a reference to an individual, group, or thing.
It's just disgusting it has to happen, and of all places, to people that cannot even help themselves on a normal day because the political agenda finds more presidence in given businesses a boost in growth and sales as appose to helping the social structure of a country.

And yes, I agree with your statement. I personally feel that a natural disaster like this is just another publicity opportunity for governments to run their mouth about how they will help, without actually doing what they said.

I kinda thought that's what you meant (hence the question) but the internet is great for misconstrued meanings so thanks for clearing it up
