i need all the NYTA's help!

hey guys...as soome of you know, i'm interested in moving up to NY. i'm just an average student from atlanta and i'd really like to have a good reason to go up there. to me, school is a good enough reason to move up to NY. i don't have loads of money pouring out of me or my parents, and i'm not a genius....so based on this, i need help recognizing nice or decent colleges/universities in new york considering they are inexpensive & in a fairly inexpensive living area.

i would greatly appreciate...apps are almost due..ahhh!

Yes I would have to agree. Most SUNY school are quite good, and are cheap at the same time. Depending ono your situation they will arrange living for you or atleast help you out getting on some sort of payment plan that best suits you.

I would suggest going to: http://www.suny.edu/

You will get all of your information there and have a good idea of the areas they are in as well. Also, you can call a counselor there for further help.

Yes, unfortunately most private/religiously affiliated schools are quite expensive. I was pre-med and graduated w/ a B.S. in Biology from Fordham Univ in the Bronx. It is in the top 50 in the country...but its about 38K/yr now. And I dont have to tell you how good Columbia and NYU are. Finanacially, for pre-med, SUNY Stony Brook is probably the best b/c of it has a teaching hospital associate with it...a lot of people in my company went that route. SUNY Binghamton is also good for Bio/Biochem..alot of peeps work w/ went there too.

Rated #3 by the Princeton Review as the best valued school in the country.

And just recently had a Rhodes Scholar graduate from there in Chemistry.

I think it having the CUNY title degrades the actual quality of the school.

Try to apply to NYU, sometimes they give out good scholarships, so you might get lucky. Also, try to go for Barnard, I think they also give out good scholarships.

You can also try St John's but I don't recommend it, it's quiet far from the city (1hr) subway ride and most of the people are commuters, plus the quality of education is mediocre.

Oh, also try Hunter, the location is fucking awesome BUT, again I hear the quality of education is mediocre.

I thought Downstate was just medical school and not undergrad..could be wrong though...b/c I have been a private/Catholic school preppie my whole life.

Binghampton is way upstate, so you might as well go to Ithaca which is ten times better.

only CUNY dorms I know of is in Hunter, and they have very little of them

EHS is a non profit organization in which they supply cheap housing for students, regardless on where you study.
so basing your decision on dorms is flawed.

it depends on her high school...NYU and Columbia's pre-med programs ARE outstanding and do accept a fair amount of ppl actually...who can afford it that is; and they do have scholarships available. at this point in her life she should be considering as many options as possible. she should throw her net OUT as far as possible n see what happens, even do early/rolling admissions. ppl have been accepted in programs that way who might have been waitlisted otherwise. and cmon, u still want a good to excellent school -- as long as its within New York State. to agree with vlad, I would definitely recommend Stonybrook and Brooklyn College to save $$$$ -- you could always find offcampus shares with fellow commuters most often cheaper than dorming. Dorming is hella expensive -- but if ur parents are going to foot everything, might as well *shruggs* stonybrook is only 1 hour + from the city...

since the OP is an out of state resident, attending a SUNY/CUNY will cost her approximately the same amount as a second and third-tier private university like fordham, st johns, pace, hoftra etc.

to the OP:
if you have outstanding grades and loads of money to spend look at Columbia and Barnard -- and NYU which is a notch or two below them.

all other schools in the area are substantially less prestigious but depending on what your needs are can offer some good values.

In Manhattan:
Pace University has solid computer science and business programs while everything else skews average but you get to live in lower manhattan (city hall area).

-- Fordham has a campus in Manhattan but most classes and activites take place in its pristine Bronx Campus. A step up from its peers st johns and pace.

--CUNYs will cost you less in tuition but you will most likely have to secure your own housing and the academics can sometimes be iffy.
CUNY-Baruch has pretty good business program and is the largest business school in the country but is lacking in almost every other sector (located in Gramercy Park area - 23rd St)
CUNY-Hunter is pretty good overall with a solid program in social work/social services and is the only CUNY with dorms (located in Upper East Side 68th St)
CUNY-City College has a good engineering program but is average in everything else (located at 137th St Harlem)

In Queens:
CUNYs in Queens are garbage with the exception of Queens College.
-- You also have so-so St. Johns -- about a 30-40 min train ride into manhattan and they built new dorms a few years ago:

In Brooklyn:
CUNY-Brooklyn College average in all respects but has the nicest cuny campus. has a pre-med program that is tough to get into.

Long Island:
--Hofstra -- mediocre private school; much drinking
--Adelphi -- more mediocrity;
--Dowling -- more mediocrity and you can actually see your money being flushed down the toilet
--SUNY Stonybrook -- good value for your money; academics can be above average if you seek them out and work hard but also easy to fall into the party trap; 420 friendly
