Idiots on the Ocean Front

HOw much should we spend on persons living on the edges of oceans knowing they will eventually get knocked out by hurricanes, typhoons, or tsunamis? Well, seems the US funds ridiculously low insurance rates for those with beach houses along ocean fronts knowing damn well they won't last for normal lifetimes. Same goes for folks living in known flood plains along any river. WTF is up here? I don't live on a f*cking cliff or on the edge of an ocean, so why should I pay when they get wiped out, which happens every damn year somewhere???

It's called "survival of the fittest."

I shouldn't have to pay for evolution.

Mainly because you are a bitch and haven't figured out how to cheat the system... jackass...

Posted by Renegade on Jan-05-2005 13:21:

Yeah we western types would never build cities on coast-lines, right? I mean, why should I feel any compulsion to help a fellow human being pick up the shattered remnants of their lives in the aftermath of a disaster they had absolutely no control over?

And you're just a cunt.

(Pro-tip: darwinism != evolution)

A lot of the people who died were tourists that were staying at resorts and hadn't settled there. The people who did live along the coast were no different than anyone living in Miami or Hawaii near the beach. A massive Tsunami like that is nowhere near as common as annual hurricane season in Florida, as an expert last night was saying there hasn't been major activity like that in the region in 500 years. If it happened somewhere in the U.S. and other countries didn't offer any assistance, Bill O'Reilly would probably start a boycott against them, like his one against France that cost them millions of dollars, according to the non-existent "Paris Business Review" he cited.

So they are like the idiots in the WTC?

Or like the women who get raped in dark alleys at night? What where they thinking, right? Women belong at home making gumbo and ironing overalls with confederate flags on them, not parading around outside right?

Well, yeah, after all this women rights crap you always have to agree with them, make compromises, ask them how they feel... Before they had to listen to you, period! Ah, where did the good ol days go?

And to smokeape:

People who inherit their houses on the coasts don't always have the ability to move to a different part of the country. More importantly, coastal towns are centers of trade and commerce, and half of the US population is living on the coast. I'd like to see your reaction if the tsunami had hit the atlantic ocean instead. Besides, what is 350 million of your taxpayer dollars compared to the billions of dollars you have spent on invading a sovereign nation on false pretenses? It's people like you that are the reason why so many people despise America.

Posted by occrider on Jan-05-2005 22:36:

Ummm I think smokeape is criticizing those who live on the coasts outside the US and inside the US under the premise that when a hurricane hits florida, or a quake hits California, the rest of the country has to pay aid, insurance companies have to pay policies, and that makes life harder on people in "safe" areas. Of course using such logic, that would eliminate people from living in the SouthEast due to hurricanes, it would eliminate people living in California due to the fault lines, it would eliminate much of the western dry states because of forest fires, and it would eliminate much of of the mid-West/South region because of Tornado alley and flooding. So I guess everyone would have to live in the Northeast and along the Canadian border. As a representative of the Northeast I graciously invite the western seaboard to our cold but comfortable waters, and I respectfully direct those from the south/mid-west to seek shelter along the Canadian border.

I dont think smoke is refering to the recent tsunami disaster(i hope not)i think he is refering to recent hurricanes in the us particularily in the gulf of mexico area..and in fairness if he is refering to that..they do happen kinda regular..like every year..so imo if thats what he talking he may have a point.

+1

if you really were serious, you should seriously seek help :s

You beat me to it occ..in this country its called risk equalization..an insurance industry term..basically if i own a house of equal value in an inland area of low risk to ahouse in a coastel area of higher risk we both pay the same premium for our insurance policys.System applies here as well.

Posted by MisterOpus1 on Jan-06-2005 16:14:

Well I certainly wouldn't mind if many folks from the coast cities move further inland. We need all the damn liberals from the coasts as we can get, damnit! You realize how fucking difficult it is to be a liberal Kansan? Git yur asses in har!

wouldnt it be easier if you just moved instead?

No one wants to live in the Northeast anyway. And also, along the Canadian Border is not safe due to sub-zero temperatures and the frequency of blizzards in the winter.

And we can't have people living in DC because the chance of dying by gunshot wound is higher that average.

Actually I think the murder rate in DC is the highest in the US. But DC is awesome, murders and all ... you people just need to be quick on your feet. All you midwest people have been getting soft thinking you're safe and all. My lease is up in July ... I may move to North East DC ... should be fun .

not even human goodwill can ever surpass survival of the fittest. no money will bring the dead back, only help out the survivors, to some extent.

if nothing else, its good karma to help out, as in the case of the tsunami. what goes around comes around...

I don't know if D.C. still retains the title. I grew up near there and they always held the record in the old days, but times change. Quick search yielded the following.

quote:
CHICAGO, Illinois (AP) -- Despite a sharp drop in homicides, Chicago has regained a title it didn't want: America's murder capital.

The city finished 2003 with 599 homicides, police said Thursday. That was down from 648 a year earlier and the first time since 1967 that the total dipped below 600.

Still, the nation's third-largest city outpaced all others for the second time in three years. New York, with about three times the population, ended the year with 596 homicides. Los Angeles, which had the most murders in 2002 at 658, wound up 2003 with an estimated total just under 500.

Atlanta was a hard competitor as well a few years back. Anybody got an update?

Posted by DrUg_Tit0 on Jan-07-2005 14:12:

Wow, crap, I never imagined the scale of the disaster to be that great. I guess it's one thing when you just read the statistics and another when you actually see what has happened.

Posted by zig on Jan-07-2005 14:54:

Same thing applies to Iraq. The American media needs to show more IMO. Some people think its inappropriate, yet didn't have a problem showing the dead bodies of Saddam's son in Times Sq.

In some instances... I think its mainly the bias that Al Jezeera has for the Iraqi insurgents... SOooooo shocking... right?

Moreover its hypocritical of Americans to criticize Al Jezeera... Considering the shitstorm of bullshit you get in the American media.
