need help with CPU purchase....

hey all, i'm looking into buying a new CPU and motherboard... i need some help...

here's my criteria:
- upgradeable (i don't want a socket type that is on its way out...)
- using mostly for work (music production and stuff)
- CHEAP, haha...

i've narrowed my search down to 3 processors based on my price constraints, hahah...

AMD 64 3000+ socket 754
AMD 64 3000+ socket 939
intel P4-520 2.8 GHz socket 775

secondly, i need a motherboard... i need some recommendations on brand. i don't need one with integrated graphics and sound. i already have a 4x AGP video card, so i won't need any PCI express slots.

i know WHERE to get this stuff, but i'd appreciate some input on WHAT to buy based on the stuff i listed at the top...

if ur goin to be rigging up ur machine with good stuff, then id get dual channel if u have the money

I'd say the Neo4, but you said PCI-X is not necessary. As well, the nForce4 chipset has yet to really prove itself, not to mention the pricetag at the moment.

You're going to be hard-pressed to find a decent mobo without integrated audio these days. That being said, you can definitely add another higher-performance sound adapter, even take advantage of the two running in tandem for some funky audio stuff...

I am a firm believer that a dedicated audio card is completely useless unless you're a sound engineer or a producer or something.

That said, I'm a big fan of my Asus K8V SE mobo.

i already have an m-audio revolution 5.1, sooo.. yeah... i have everything, i'm just upgrading my cpu/mobo.... that's all i need.

as of now, i've decided on AMD 64 3000+ with a socket 939 mobo... dunno which one yet... leaning towards the abit AV8 because of the price...

also going for 1gig of RAM.. dunno what kind yet...

What are the advantages of Socket 939 over Socket 754?

I would stick with the intel. I know there is a lot of competition between AMD and Intel but Intel seems to always win the performance tests.

I bought the Asus board to match my CPU and I haven't been happier with my purchase (except those great shoes I got for a 1/4 of their price today).

And good choice on getting the most RAM possible. That is what will really make a difference in the end.

i'm definitely going with a socket 939 board since it seems to be here to stay for at least another year... maybe i'll have money to upgrade sometime in the future...

can anyone suggest some good RAM for AMD processors? I've read a bad review on Samsung RAM with AMD chips.... I'm looking at buying 1 GB kingston PC3200 ram...

yeh id just stay with kingston

I have to disagree with you on that one. Although both companies have their strengths and weaknesses, they are quite on par in terms of application performance. In terms of games, The Athlon64 cannot be beat. The price on the other hand. I would not buy Intel because of the price. As well, the P4 is based on old architecture.

funny, when i was buying my computer the athlon64 was just being unveiled the month after, i wasn't going to wait for it and at the time intel was winning the performance tests. maybe things have changed. thanks for the info.

I got an ASUS P4C800E-DLX for my computer, and ever since I used standby in windows, the computer would randomly not turn on. Sometimes I would wake up, turn on my computer, and find nothing happen, wouldn't even go to POST. The only way to boot it up was to unplug it from the wall and wait atleast 1 hour.. ahah. Anyways one day it just refused to turn on forever, so I tried new ram, new psu, and eventually a new mobo. I replaced it with the cheaper ASUS P4P800E-DLX (which I can't even tell any difference between).

So, I don't know if these problems are common in ASUS boards, but I guess the P4P is working out fine. I would probably recommend it if you're going with a P4.

i'm SET on buying the athlon 64 3000+ cpu, and the kingston ram... but i'm still really torn on the motherboard though...

I'm loyal to intel...Thus my suggestion would be to get any of the new Intel Desktop boards.....they perform very well and have satisfied a whole lot of performance tests....Unless ur an extremely heavy user of ur machine, the differences between AMD and Intel aren't even noticable
