Music production in Toronto?

I'm originally from Toronto but I left years before I got interested in music production. I'm moving back in a few months. Can anyone tell me of any courses that offer formal tuition? I've tried all sorts of entries into Google and seem to be finding nothing. Any kind of course, I don't mind as long as it's a taught course. Maybe even a distance learning course from anywhere in the world would be good. Please help, I'm sick of reading instruction manuals...

actually.. it would be cool to have a toronto producers meet-up.. that would be very cool..

To answer your question however, there is a school for audio mastering and things like that. Trebas institute of ____ (forgot exactly the name)

It's on College and University.

There's also a course at Seneca college called "Independant music production" , but you cover everything .. including useless things like songwriting

A master's in producing eh?? It looks really cool however, are there any prerequisite programs or courses you would need to take for that?

Hey man.

Just got your message there. Been away from the net for a few days. It's exam time in college. One interesting thing I've found is on berkleemusic.com. They've loads of interesting music production courses. They're online courses so would be good to do if I can't find anything in Toronto.

I know this is the producers forum, but what's the club scene like in Toronto? I know Tisto played there last year but in general what's the scene? Good underground clubs? Europe's great for clubbing but unfortunately Limerick is crap. We had Tisto, Tall Paul and a few others a few years back but nothing really happens here now. Everyone's too into their pop and hip hop. Dublin has a few good DJ's but too few and far between. Let me know when you get chance. Cheers.

well the hip hop thing is all over the world unfortunatly its a disease we cant stop hehehe i joke
but ya our trance scene is pretty good here, nothing compared to Holland (Amsterdam) but still good
id say every month we get a SICK dj, example, tiesto / blank and jones / armin / ferry

BY THE WAY, ARMIN is here MARCH 24 !!!!
if plans work out, this will be the first time i see him live

(Not trying to make a commercial here .. just my advice ..

I really suggest International Academy of Design and Technology (Toronto Film School)
Sound Technology program. Im attending it (Already in 4th term) and it's trully amazing. It's expensive tho, but equipment we got is great.. Best part of it is that it's accessible 24/7 (For studios, they have to be booked). Right now equipment wise we got 2 midi labs (One of 'em has new fresh G5's, Rolands Fantom 8's and digi002's and digi 8 channel controllers) Another one has Yamaha Motif's and G4's with Pro Tools, Logic.
Plus We got 2 studios in facility .. one of 'em has huge 24 chan SSL console (Amazing Analog board.. trully amazing) and in another studio we got i think either 24 chan Mackie .. damn dont remember model..
Plus HD room with 24 fader (automated) controller (Pro Tools, basically for Post production ... well i find it great for mixdowns.. )
Neat stuff is that Academy is located in CBC Broadcasting building .. in the heart of downtown ..and well in the heart of TV/Post production.
more info www.iadt.ca
About Trebas Institute .. i heard it's pure shit .. they got shitty equipment .. but it's cheaper for tuition..
Colleges, Universities .. it's a huge class sizes and harder to get in cuz a lot of ppl are applying..
So if u got $$ or wanna take OSAP .. IADT is the place to go

Where's he gonna be? I'm kind of out of teh club scene now caus eits all crappy top 40 trash..never found any real good clubs that play any good trance...also my friends don't like trance...It's funny cause I used to work at raves(setting up the sound and lighting)...I sort of miss those happy hardcore raves...lol...maybe not! First time I ever heard someone drop the mario brothers song though..lol. Anyway let mw know abou the Armin thing.

Don't forget about Harris Institute...heard that was good. Als My college, or former college offered courses...but don't know if they are any good. Take a look at Centennial College.

Yeah Amsterdam's a pretty crazy place. And Holland is the source and inspiration for all good trance these days. Nobody better than Tisto and Armin. Not such a big Ferry fan anymore. He's good but he hasn't moved along the way Tisto and Armin have. He's stuck a few years back. I can see why they don't work with him anymore. Styles are a bit incompatible, but that said he is still pretty shit hot. Armin is sensational live. I heard him at Dance Valley last summer. He did a six hour set. I didn't stay for it all though, there was loads of other good shit happening. Heard him in God's Kitchen on tour in November 03. Very class. You'll enjoy him immensely, his DJing and production style are in a word: beautiful.

So is there sort of one decent place that books good talent or does it vary. I heard Tisto was at the Docks? Any good local talent? I'd love to hear the Canadian take on the trance scene. If you're prepared to travel in Europe then you're spoiled for choice when it comes to the big guns, but I love hearing new young DJs too. No cynicism or laziness from them.

Anyway this is a huge rant, but I guess I'm just passionate and there ain't too many people of my friends who want to hear about Tijs, Ferry, prog trance, hi-hats, etc etc....

I must have an auld look at that. Sounds promising. And nothing's better than someone actually taking the course. You're never going to hear a website for a college say "Yeah our course is alright, we've okay equipment, we're kinda good etc." Thanks for the info.
