Overated!
He didnt deserve to be in the top 10 in DJ mag.

Posted by Cobalt on Jan-14-2005 21:06:

Respectfully agree.

This year he finally got the recognition he deserves.

Posted by Cobalt on Jan-14-2005 21:12:

He's my #3 behind PvD and Marco V. Pushes a unique sound that is always fresh and tough. He's great live.

Question for you.

How can he be the #7 DJ in the world, when nobldy outside of the US knows who he is, and in the US, he wasnt even in the top 50 DJs on the DJ list?

Fishy!!!!

Good question.

But I still think he deserves it. He has a pretty strong global following, actually. But it doesn't get blasted over European airwaves as much as some others.

Posted by Durrrtysouth on Jan-14-2005 21:28:

Not enough to warrant him being #7, I think he deservers credit for his achievements over the years, but no way he should have even cracked the top 50 last year.

That being said, I give him credit for 1: carving out his own sound and 2: his technical skills.

(I was taught that you must say 2 positive things for every negative thing)

Until you seem him live (I have 5 times) I don't think your opinion means much!

He may not have an ASOT radio show or any incredibly famous productions, but this guy can rock a dance floor with a different brand of trance than any other DJ I have seen.

I think he's a guy that the lovers of the Epic Trance (armin, pvd, tiesto etc) as well as the lovers of the prog (digweed, sasha, holden etc) can all appreciate, which is kind of rare these days.

How come he got an Essential Mix if noone outside of the US knows who he is? How come he gets worldwide bookings if noone outside of the US knows who he is?

A solid dj and producer, and one of the few trance DJs left playing stuff with some edge and bite to it. He should stop playing all those shit hard house records though.

Posted by Durrrtysouth on Jan-15-2005 00:22:

To be honest essential mix has more unknown DJs then they have popular DJs. Most of the DJs arent even in the top 100.

Posted by NiteMer on Jan-15-2005 00:28:

Christopher Lawrence is a solid dj, as a mixer, and plays a very unique and driving sound. I wouldn't call him God, but he's definitely good. He's a lot more technical than Tiesto or Oakie, but his flavor can be a little bit weak at times. I find that he sticks in the Christopher Lawrence/Moonshine sound a little much at times, but I still respect him and plan on seeing him play again. You really can't question his credibility. Most people that are knowledgeable, know who he is and many have heard his productions (a la Mile Hi - Night Fever), even if they don't know it's him.

That doesn't mean they aren't known outside of the US.

Just to show you how the EM is no longer what it used to be, just look at these upcomming guest:

John O'bir (Quality DJ but unranked)
David Guetta (Popular Hose DJ, but by no means a superstar)
Nik Fanciulli (heard his name, not heard much from him)
Eddie Halliwell (again heard his name but never heard him)
Ben Watt (unranked house DJ)
Krafty Kuts (heard the name but dont know himn either)

these names I am sure are respectable DJs, just as CL is, but if we saw any of them ranked in the top 10 of a popularity poll, then you know something isnt right.

My point being, CL is a legendary DJ, but he is overated. No way he is one of the 10 most popular DJs on the planet. Yes he has skills and a cool sound, but could he fill up a club by himself in Ibiza, England, Holland, NYC?

No, it just indicates that Chris doesn't have the same PR cabinet backing him than say Tiesto.

That is of course true. He's still a pretty new name DJ wise, but he's definitely been around outside of the american border.

Posted by Durrrtysouth on Jan-15-2005 00:42:

So in your opinion, do you think he honestly deserves the label as one of the 10 most popular DJs on the planet?

Not at all. I can't recall giving him that label to be honest. However, saying that noone outside of the US knows his name is not fair either, as his recent exploits show.

all seriously well respected DJ's, the chances are people in the UK are going to know these names instead of Christopher Lawrence, so you can hardly say the EM is going downhill

Posted by Durrrtysouth on Jan-15-2005 01:26:

Then let me re-phrase:

EM doesnt have the international appeal it once had.

and you've been listening for how long? every week?
I do believe you're going on the occasional big sets
it's always been like this

Posted by Durrrtysouth on Jan-15-2005 01:36:

I have been following EM for the past 5 years, and no it has never been like this. I remember looking at the schedules and I always knew somehting about every guest on EM. Now....who the hell is Radio Soulwax, Kings of Tomorrow? Common, if you dont notice that Tong has made a concioous effort to be more underground than he used to, the you are a blind elitist.
