LIVE EDM ACTS and PAs

I've been to a couple live acts (ie.BT, Infected mushroom, NuNrg)but I have yet to grasp the concept on "what are they are actually doing". Yeah Yeah I know what youre thinking "hes a dj and doesnt know what theyre doing?" I never really paid attention to it because it never really interested me enough to do my homework and get info.

But yesterday I was able to catch Infected mushroom at Nations in DC. As I was watching I noticed that it looked like they really werent doing anything at all. The bald guy was barely tweeking knobs, just looking at computer screen and dancing like crazy and the other one was looking into space playing keys but never nsync with music. So Im thinking to myself are they faking and letting the computer do all the work?? But its probably because I dont understand what theyre doing.

SO, What are they doing up there????????????????

I don't know about those acts, but most EDM live acts do actually play live. I guess you could tell by how different the music sounds to the recorded version.

Maybe Infected wasnt really up to it that day and felt for a little bit of playback?

Damn one knows the answer to this question???

Layering loops, adding in synth lines, re-editing and re-mixing tracks on the fly, most probably.

Some acts will just stick a layout of a few tracks on logic and do fook all, though.

Yeah, I think that's what most of them do. I saw Nu-NRG and one guy was working the mixer, changing the drum patterns (preprogrammed, he just had to press a button and it changed and adding effects), while the other guy was "playing" the synth. These were just preprogrammed arpeggios, melodies, etc, he just changed the key.

There was a really good article posted here mid 2003 about this, if someone could find it would be sweet
