breaks for an entire night isn't my thing, but when I saw zabiela at the beginning of december, I can honestly say he's one of the most skilled DJs out there. I can only imagine him and Phil K back 2 back.

Well, I have to be in awe of the skills from JZ & PK.

That said, it wasn't really my kind of night. I felt that it got to the stage, about an hour in to their set, where the scratching and effects became the focus of the night at the expense of the dancefloor vibe. I'm generally a 4/4 kind of guy, and I just couldn't feel any sort of continuous groove happening.

Jono Fernandez played a crowd-pleasing warmup set, and Gough & Chable were, for mine, the pick of the night. Room was comfortably full, thank goodness, and nowhere near as hot as the previous night at CL.

Cheers to marsh, SteveStrangis and vitamin v (nice to meet you, if only so briefly!) who made the trip to Room.

Verdict: nice to say I was there.

Honestly- a tad dissapointed, but glad I've seen him none the less.

The sytle they were playing, prog and prog-breaks, well I'm open minded with it and can enjoy a night of it if the set is put together well and the groove is kept, but they just had these massive flatspots of self indulgent noise in between tracks and sometimes just over the tracks and I hear my self asking "I am I supposed to be impressed..?" Rather than building tension on the dancefloor as fx and builds and such like do, the noises were harsh and stagnant (not building) and there was rarely an actual release!! (but I admit there were actually a few really good ones). Having said that, there was some stuff that really impressed me such as the platter work on the 1000's coupled with fx- when used in a musical way to enhance the music not to divert from it.

So call me a purist (you'd be way off) but I like groove and continuity in a set, and can do well without loosing the thread and wandering off the dance floor (I wasn't alone).

What I think? - James Z and Phil on K should (IMO) get back down to earth and sure up their playing style, concentrate on the music a tiny bit more and use slightly less over the top fx wizardry/wankery, as it would be more accessable to people who like music instead of people who like pink noise and modulating LFO's for about 80 painful seconds. But the key here, as mentioned, is making it enhance the music, not divert from it.

I could be wrong (but it hasn't happened yet).

OH! that exlains the sudden jumps/dips in level- I was wondering whether that was some intentional effect or what (because once it happened to conincide with the musical phrase), and was therefore scratching my head . Cool

Don't get me wrong- I enjoyed the night and really enjoyed the set, it's just that I'd heard amazing reviews from friends who went to the last show and also from the web, so i built it up really massively (which is never smart as I'm not a total prog/breaks convert so a set really has to flow - it's just my tastes). And circumstances have this way of panning out I know that as well as any performing musician

But the things I liked best fx and trickery wise, were the rhythmicly based ones, as they became part of the music, but discernably live sounding and exciting- (just lose that 149dB+ guitar noise)

Given the chance I would & will go again

Pretty much agree with most of what has been said. For me, FX are best used, to enhance buildups and breakdowns during tracks and transitions. Last night, however, the FX units were used to create new sounds, which got a bit tiresome to listen to as the set wore on. I appreciate the incredible skills that were needed to generate all those sounds, but not when it is at the expense of the music.

Then again, I understand that this callabaration was a world first, and very much experimental at times, which may explain the disjointedness of the set. However, I did think that the use of the DVJ was awesome, which allowed the visuals to be played and controlled in line with the music and what was being sampled.

shame about the sound probs at the beginning, after that intro and all it promised so much. for a split second my raver instincts told me dumonde was gonna get played, oh such a tease.

Yeah yeah yeah. Had a decent night, however music took a back seat to catching up with people, drinking and general acts of stupidity. But yeah, was after more groove, less chop and changing. Still, hearing Sander's The Fruit on a large sound system was nice.

im sure it was jimmy page and beeing a huge Led Zeppelin fan i absolutely loved it!! That clip was out of the 'Led Zeppelin - The Song Remains The Same' DVD and the song was Dazed and Confused..coincidently..my Fav. track of theirs hehe

back to the review. got back from holidays and decided to go and check it out with the Madman. it was quiet packed out and got there towards the end of Jono's set and loved hearing the prodigy vocals..

zabiela and phil k jumped on. i would have rathered a set from james himself but they done well together. i didnt miond the style they played and the effects were awesome at times but over the top towards the end. but it was all for a good causei guess.

chable and gough jumped on and started off breaky but then picked up the tempo with some awesome tracks and a few requests from us like sanctuary (ivan gough remix) and Luke Chable presents Quest - The Shepherd (Original Mix)...but then it was time to go.

ended up getting a cab home with marsh and peta and met a raver from the past who had an old Viper cd on from early 2001 - 2002. he was a laugh.

Heh, well I did make the post at 6.15am. Should really stop posting on the internet in those states at those sorts of times though (especially since I had to be up for work at 11 that morning)...

Anyway, the night was a killer in my opinion. I think people (both here and on ITM) have judged the set too harshly for lacking flow (which was true) and the overuse of "flair" with scratching and the use of the sampling / fx machine (whatever it's called - I'm no good with technology ). To be honest I'm not exactly sure what you were expecting - here we had two of the most techically brilliant DJs in the world, playing back to back for the first time ever, with thousands of dollars worth of equipment that they are both experts at using. If you were expecting a carefully layered, slowly building prog set then you either should have come in earlier to see Jono Fernandez (who was brilliant I think - one of the few guys that can make prog-breaks interesting. He's thoroughly earnt a spot in the main-room imho) or waited for Hernan Catteneo on the 30th, because this was always going to be a DJing exhibition and that's exactly what we got.

As with last time James played down here, some of the skills on display were amazing (many of them coming from Phil, who knows how to turn it on as well) and there were many times during the night where me and basix21 were just looking at each other shaking our heads in disbelief. As I said in an SMS to a friend that night, you could have turned the sound off and still enjoyed yourself just watching some of the things these guys were doing behind the decks. They hardly stopped moving or fiddling with things for the entire 2.5 hours they played for. Some things came off (there was this backwards / fowards thing they were doing during Fruit that made it look like they'd been spinning together for years) and some of it didn't, but I'll be damned if you'll ever see more innovative use of DJing equipment than that. And there were some pretty decent tunes being laid down as well - they got me dancing to breaks there for a bit, so they must have been doing something right.

So, in short, once again James, you have succeeded in blowing me away. Come back soon.
