Tyler C vs State of Matter - Silver Sun (Original Mix)

Haha, quite productive lately. The latest offering is a collaboration between myself and Tyler C. We've been working on this for the past 3 or 4 weeks now, very different from both of our usual stuff, but we're both extremely happy with the result. This is just an overall fun trance track, reminiscent of sort of a mix between gouryella and nu nrg in terms of synthwork and structure, and we hope you have as much fun listening as we had writing this.

Tyler C vs State of Matter - Silver Sun (V2 EDIT)

Quality: 192 kbps sample
Style: Melodic Trance
Tempo: 140 bpm

ok, guys

quality track here as usual,

i love the breakdown, i can feel your style here som atm

like the melodies, the main melody kinda remind to something, i heard before but not sure

anyway, tbh, dont really like the bassline, needs more drive to it, i think, but it's just personal taste

cool track, overall

Posted by TOR on Jan-17-2005 14:02:

good melodies, but there's a couple of things i don't like.. first of all, too much is happening. sometimes less equals more, which i think would be the case here. it's all just a bit too chaotic. and secondly, the main synth shoud be at least one octave lower.. it's "screaming" way too much, i feel like being in desperate need of air when listening to it.

Posted by Massive84 on Jan-17-2005 16:28:

Yes my first impression, was the chaos.

Second was the synths, the saws didn't fit in this tune IMO, but thats taste.

Great break thought, good breakbeats, but like i said, it's hard to say what is what due the chaos, i can't feel all the elements well.

Hope that helps

Posted by AniG on Jan-17-2005 16:39:

yeh it does sound kinda chaotic, id have to agree. but some people like it sounding that way :P as i notice everyone saying, its personal preference.

Posted by EtherealSL on Jan-17-2005 17:04:

hmm... you already know most of what i think

a few new things: bring in that lead ONLY in the breakdown... it really takes away from that really cool gliding synth.

Like said before, melody is BOSS... but it's that secondary synth that helps out during the melody, it's pwm like fucking crazy, kinda pisses me off but then again, you know i have an allergy to pwm stuff

make changes accordingly and get this to DJs ASAP

Posted by dannyc on Jan-17-2005 19:42:

mmm was'nt really feeling this one, dont know why, it seems like a good track. i think theres way to much hi in it for a start, that main synth was nothing special it kinda annoyed me. the break was a kinda strange too the pads seemed a bit out of tune in parts. when that synth comes back in on the break its ear piercingly high.

sorry its probably mainly cause its not my style that i dont like it.
good work otherwise.

Posted by tylerc on Jan-17-2005 20:01:

thanks for all the comments guys, we definitely take everything you say to heart. should have an updated clip up any time now.

btw ethereal, i r noob, so yer gonna hafta explain what pwm is, are you talking about the mod wheel automation on the kinda guitar soundin thing? i suppose pwm is pitch wheel modulation......

Posted by State of Matter on Jan-17-2005 22:02:

The honest feedback is definitely appreciated. I've just spent a few hours tweaking the track, and I have a new sample. This is DIFFERENT from the link above, for the purpose of comparison. Please let us know what you think. Thanks again guys.

Silversun V2

I brought the lead synth down an octave and eq'd the highs out a bit to make it less piercing. Bassline is playing an octave lower and with a more driving pattern. Orchestral strings play only during the breakdown. Some submelodies removed as well to cut back on the chaotic sound of the original version.

Posted by Luke Terry on Jan-17-2005 22:17:

the saw synths still doesnt sit right for me, it sounds far too busy

percs need thickening in the midrange, bass sounds better, you could definately do with a working secondary bassline in there though

sounds more like a clash of styles rather than a harmonisation, and i can tell that working with you first hand brandon lol

Posted by EtherealSL on Jan-18-2005 00:42:

version 2:

Tyler, you're correct, by pwm (pitch wave modulation) i mean your automation on certain notes on the "guitar" synth, the melody on that synth is fine, and i was telling SoM earlier via IM that the automation isn't really necessary, kinda throws me off from the lead "saw" synth, which is such a good melody, i would hate to get my attention thrown off by something else

This version is a lot cleaner during the mainsection... still not liking that pitch bendingness on that guitar. definately an improvement in terms of clarity from the first one. The lead sounds much fuller and less hi-pitched (i'm assuming you added another version of the synth on that's lower one octave) I think you should increase the release (or delay?) on that new lead saw, though, seems like the notes end abruptly when playing the main melody.

Posted by tylerc on Jan-18-2005 05:40:

thanks ethereal.

i'm just waiting to catch som on msn and get the track from him. ill have another go at it and see if we cant polish this lil thing up.

Posted by Icone on Jan-18-2005 15:01:

Sounds fine to me, apart from what the others said... Just feels too busy all the time.

I kinda liked the kick more in version 1, felt more in-mix to me. The one in v2 feels a bit heavier.

I agree with TOR on the lead though, would love to hear it one octave lower cause I think the melody rocks!

Keep us updated

Cheers,
Wim

Yeh that lead synth is an octave to high I guess. Melody is decent, just too high.
Violin strings in the break, they pop up quite often these days hehe.
I like the breakbeat there.
Mixdown could be better, a lot of synthsounds drown in the mainpart. That's why it sounds messy. It's not all about a clear kick, don't forget the rest

Overall nice work, keep it up!

Posted by State of Matter on Jan-18-2005 16:34:

The synth in V2 is lowered an octave already. If I lower it anymore its gonna be bass

Also, right now we've got the lead, the synth-guitar thing, the pads, and then kick/percs and bass. That's all thats playing during the main theme. Is this still too busy? The only thing I could possibly remove right now would be the guitar. Then it'd just be the lead, pads, and as standard, the percs and bass, and that sounds a bit boring to me...

awfull download speed like 2 kb/s

Posted by GLD on Jan-18-2005 18:33:

yes, what a break! adore the strings, just love 'em! nice stereo panorama. the strings are too much high frequencies, lower them a little and make 'em fatter. great melodies, great drive in the track. good job!

I know what you mean... Perhaps it's the amount of reverb/delay effects of the different sounds which overlaps too much? Considering the amount of instruments it wouldn't seem all too 'chaotic'.

Gonna listen to v2 again on that lead

Posted by tylerc on Jan-18-2005 20:40:

ok, well after going over this several times i think its the combination of the saw string, the arp and the lead synth before the breakdown that creates the 'chaos'. its most evident at :27 in V2. they are all very driving patterns but they're all driving in slightly different directions which i think is the problem.

imo i like it, i think its very tense and hi energy sounding, then it relaxes and sounds pretty smooth once it kicks in, but i may be a bit biased

i'll go over it for a while tonight and see if we can't polish er off.

btw, are you guys saying its pretty chaotic throughout the whole thing? or just during that first section prior to the break??

i totally understand where you're hearing it in the beginning, but it really sounds fine to me after the breakdown.....let us know

Posted by Axolotyl on Feb-22-2005 02:01:

duuuude... I love this track. Chaos? Whats that? That track sounds slightly out of control which is one thing I go for in trance above all else. Nice perfect compositions are great for ASOT, but give me a rack of synths just holding key and I'll be happy.

But I digress... really nice track. The breakdown is to die for. I'm too in love with this tune to offer any substantial comments... hehe

Posted by wrzonance on Feb-22-2005 04:32:

Will review as i listen.

Liking the strings here. Neat effects going along with this break down. Cool airy crash sound. Good pick up on that main synth. Yay kick roll!!!

I agree that the bass needs some work, basslines are so hard .

This is solid stuff. Good break beat break down, interesting perc effects, reminds me of Hybrid drums. I <3 break beat break downs. The melody leaves something to be desired but it's still good, maybe it's just different than most of what i've heard.

Over all. I really like it. Keep up the good work.

Later

Firstly, gourgeous break. SHIT! Strings are absolutely stunning. I'm not much for the synth you chose though; sounds really crap at such a high key imo. Percussion is gorgeous as always. Loving the bg bongos as well. Ah, the synth in the background needs to have some or more osc; it's a matter of taste but I think it sounds too 'synthy' for a tune that is trying to be sweet and melodic. Perhaps a more driving sub-melody would really work with this.

Anyways, cant fault it that much because the quality is something which im eventually hoping to amase. Nice production guys.

More in future please.

Posted by eulerfx on Feb-23-2005 05:28:

- very nice track melodically, but i think everything would sound better if it were an octave lower
- great energy and break
- perhaps make some of the synths fuller and more analog sounding

Posted by Stino on Feb-23-2005 13:57:

i dont know why everyone is moaning about chaos, its just a decent trance tune, nothing new, and i like it.

Strings need some fattening up, more mids and lows and that guitar thing sounds to computerish. Breakbeat is awesome.

V1:
Nice stuff.
Good lead.
I like the saw synth.
Great breaks but the ohihat is disturbing.
It does sound a little bit chaotic.
The strings should have more low/high end.
The guitar is nice.
V2:
Nice 303s :P
Sounds better now.
You almost can't hear the clap and I don't hear any other prec.

4/5

Have a nice day,
Omer Katz aka The Darkone
