Difference between trance and techno?

Refer to subject!

Posted by slinkyhead on Jan-17-2005 15:56:

not another one of these.

both are genres that pretty much everyone will have different opinions of. In general

Trance: more about the build-up, ie the track goes all quite and then builds up to a crescendo and the beat kicks back in. Trance is more fluffy

example djs Armin, Ferry Corsten, Paul van Dyk

Techno: More about the beat, maybe more subtle as well in its build up. Possibly slightly more repetivtive. Techno is more grimey

example djs: Carl Cox, Dave Clarke, UMEK

Trance = microwaved junk food.

Techno = gourmet dinner.

listen to a techno tune by dave the drummer or chris liberator then
listen to a trance track by above & beyond or ferry corsten

after that if u still cant tell the difference u must be deaf

When you say techno is more about the beat... similar to house music correct.... not so melodic but more of repetative beats?

And when you say trance is fluffy, that means is usually more melodic with synths and less about the beat...

Trance is generally a longer more progressive type of EDM. Its more about the buildup than techno.

Wanna Hear Some Trance?

ummmm i dunno, listen to ETN trance channel or something, the lines between [good] trance and prog are blurred now

here is a little something to help you distinguish genres...if you can tell the difference between these tunes...you can understand the difference in genres...

and please...these are just basic category examples...don't need any crap about hard house vs techno, prog house vs prog trance bla bla bla...

TECHNO

Mauro Picotto - Alchemist (Sample)

Yoji Biomehanika - Samurai (The Keyboard Cowboys)(Sample)

TRANCE

8 Wonders - The Morning After (Thrillseekers Mix)(Sample)

Armin van Buuren - Burned With Desire (Rising Star Vocal Mix)(Sample)

HOUSE

Armand van Helden - You Don't Know Me (Sample)

Mylo - Drop The Pressure (Original Version) (Sample)

PROG

Quest - The Shepard (Sample)

Madam - Penetration (Sample)

BREAKS

Anyoona - Anyoona (Breaks Mix) (Sample)

Fretwell - Fill Me Up (Fretwell Dub) (Sample)

PSY / GOA

Psychoheads - Smoking Dope Melts My Mind (Sample)

The Madmen - Off Your Head (Sample)

and of course there are more genres out there...that is just some basics...i hope i picked pretty clear examples...

Trance is more melodic and easier on the ear, while Techno is more drum/bass oriented.

Posted by Cobalt87 on Jan-17-2005 23:24:

Trance:

Melodic, build up, addition and subtraction of instuments, "happy", gets adrenaline rushing. Kind of like an essay, rather than a statement.

Techno:
Repetative, not build up, few intruments, "depressing", good background music. Kind of like a statment rather than an essay. When I listen to techno after listening to trance, the techno sounds empty and repetative. I like both generes though.

Posted by Ory on Jan-17-2005 23:28:

Techno depressing? Nah. It's energetic and evil... in some cases. Prog house is more depressing.

i think the better question is, what are the similarities?

1. sometimes they are both all digitally created, not always though

i think that's all
im sure there are more similarities between trance and rap

Posted by twisted on Jan-18-2005 05:36:

Yoji Biomehanika is NOT NOT NOT NOT techno

actaully i thought RAiN had a lot of techno elemnts to it..

Posted by Sykonee on Jan-18-2005 06:06:

Breakdowns and builds? Naw, both genres have them. Heck, techno made ludicrous use of them back in the early 90's just as much as trance has in recent years.

Melodies? Techno's had them too. Strings Of Life, anyone? Again, it's only in recent years that techno shyed away from melody, more as a resentment to trance's over-abundence use of them than anything else.

Some might say that it's down to the drum programming, that techno tends to be more intuitive whereas trance has gotten very simplistic. This aruguement's a load of crock when you throw Oliver Lieb into the equation.

The only difference between trance and techno tends to be what made the two splinter in the beginning: atmosphere. Specifically spacey, heavenly, or euphoric elements tend to dominate trance and futuristic, robotic, distopian elements are common in techno.

Posted by Radagast on Jan-18-2005 06:07:

Techno = More percussion, less melody
Trance = More melody, less percussion, loots of arpeggiation and gate effects

Other than that they're pretty similar...

Posted by Nsonic on Jan-18-2005 06:08:

ok, i think

trance has a gradual build up of layers of sound reaching a climax at some point and then just "building down" soon after that

techno builds up as well, but since there is little or no melody, there isnt really a climax so it ends up being pretty much flat all the wy through

thats just my opinion

edit> omg..two posts while i posted that :P

Posted by beats and beeps on Jan-18-2005 06:17:

uhhh

Listen to like Deetron, or Patrik Skoog, maybe Ken Ishii, or maybe even hideyuki eto.

Then listen to "Generic Trance Artist"

I hope you notice a difference.

Posted by Sunsnail on Jan-18-2005 06:20:

there is no difference......
