MOTORCYCLE:
Prepare for an evocative journey that takes music to a new level, elusively challenging any categorization. A new sound is emerging from the US... Meet Motorcycle.

Motorcycle is Jes Brieden, Josh Gabriel, and Dave Dresden. The band strives to deliver an experience, a vibe that music fans and clubbers alike will find irresistible. Motorcycle's chemistry is immediate and acutely delivers a diverse and memorable sound.

An extraordinary combination of Jes's brilliant songwriting and velvet-laden vocals, Dave's creative influence, and Josh's vision, Motorcycle emits a sound that transcends the current stale nature of popular music.

Jes, who performs as the lead singer and founder of her band JES, met Gabriel & Dresden, known for their melodic progressive production style and Billboard charting remixes, in the summer of 2002. Jes, who has also collaborated with DJ D:Fuse, Deep Sky, and Solarstone met Dave at a D Fuse show. Dave was amazed with her vocal style and songwriting abilities, and asked if she would be interested in coming to San Francisco to meet Josh Gabriel and collaborate with the two.

"There's definitely a great dynamic between us all. No ones locked into any one thing or style of music, which is good as we're not restricted by self-imposed pigeonholes. We just ride the waves. We are all very ripe and busting with ideas." says Jes.

how did this turn out?

Posted by DaveT on Jan-21-2005 22:16:

Ruby Skye was packed. Although a good chunk was the typical crowd who didn't care who was playing.

But no rudeness. I give the crowd a B+. A rarety for RS, lol.

Anyhow, more thoughts:

I got there right at 10 knowing Josh & Dave came on at 9 and wanted to get some time listening to them in. Josh & Dave spun a great set. A lot housier than usual, but it was done on purpose because the RS crowd typically likes house. Great programming on their part.

I actually wasn't expecting a whole lot out of Motorcycle, but was actually pleasantely surprised. While it wasn't the greatest live act I have heard, I thought Jes did a great job considering her monitor speakers were constantly cutting in and out on her - they couldn't figure out what was going on.

She sang four songs I can recall: Deep Breath Love, Around You, Imagination, and As the Rush Comes. In that order.

She was "eh" on Deep Breath Love, but got better with every song. Then she NAILED As the Rush Comes. It sounded awesome. Right on key. Perfect voice used.

My only fuss at the night is that when Jes came on, Josh and Dave started breaking down and got out from behind the decks to let Dimitris Mykonos set. I thought this took away from the whole "Motorcycle" act occuring. Even if they faked it, I thought it would have been a lot more appealing if they stayed behind the decks and acted like they were doing something with the music. Like Way out West (when it isn't a full band).
