Keeping up to date

I live in US and unfortunately trance is one of the least popular genres here. So, it is very hard to keep up with the current releases and knowing what songs and producers are "hot". I can't just turn on the radio and listen to some new, popular trance tunes, nor can I go to a record shop and pick up a decent trance compilation CD. At least this is the case in New York City.

I would greatly appreciate it if you could recommend some compilation CDs (preferably unmixed) featuring high quality, "hot" trance tunes. I would also like to know if there are any websites (aside from TA) that will aid me keep track of the current releases.

Just to be more specific, I like progressive trance (Matt Hardwick's and Misja Helsloot's sets on this site come to mind) and I also like trance with a harder edge (Alphazone, Cosmic Gate, Scot Project, Nu-NRG, Flutlicht, Marc Dawn, etc.)

Hope you can guide me in the right direction. Thanks in advance!

hey mate, just swung by to let you know that it doesnt quite work that way.
trance (luckily for me, you & everyone who likes it) is still an underground genre (relatively), and when you're talking about underground, expecting to hear it on the local radio is a bit absurd.
although there are people who keep charts, i'd advise you to stay clear of them. cause honestly, if you want to find what you like, you gotta find it yourself (by whatever means you got).
basically, looking for a chart is like looking for someone to tell you what to like, and then you lost one of the major points of the underground.

i hope you know what i mean, if not, ill try to elaborate later.

i have no way of finding out new releases either there is no magical place that they are all listed (although i wish there was), however every day i check www.juno.co.uk and check the new releases, they have samples there to listen to and if it sounds decent ill buy it, another way to keep up to date is to download all the newest sets that come out and find the tracklist to them but that takes time and downloading is wrong, like you say tho u dont have a record shop, fortunatly i do so thats another source for new tunes, i guess you just have to look, anyway try online shops they are usually the best place.

Go out to alot of parties, your not supposed to know the artists and title of every track that comes on, your just supposed to dance and have fun.

You will hear all the newest tunes by partying regularly, which isn't a big challenge for somebody living in NYC

There are plently of sources where one can buy music from, most of the music that I keep recordings of these days is stuff that I get off of netlables and various "demo scene" websites(just do a google search if your curious what that is). But the kind of stuff I find myself keeping is not hot or popular by any means, but I would rather it be that way to tell you the truth.

There are all sorts of stores and websites that EDM can be bought in (Especialy in NYC). I would advise staying away from large stores like Best Buy, Circuit City, or anything in the mall because they usualy have a very crappy and small section of EDM(but if you are still looking for popular stuff, it will be in there). I suggest exploring sounds on the net and them buying them by looking up information on a particular artist that you like.

There are of course the CD stores that have nothing but music in them, they usualy have limited selections of the most popular stuff as well.

Then you have your record stores, they sell vinyl to DJ's and alot of them specialize in dance music, but they aren't really helpful if you aren't a DJ.

There is definately a demand for dance music that is made for listening intead of DJ'ing that isnt being met by the stores.

I wish there was a CD shop or a site that offers downloads that had the same kind of selection that a DJ has at a record store, but it doesnt exist in America

UnWorldly, I would love to go to parties, but there aren't any good ones in NYC. Another option is to go to night clubs, but all they play there is hip-hop, reggae and R&B; they might also play house occasionally. The store I used to buy my records at was Satellite Records, but their trance selection has diminished significantly about 2-3 years ago. I used go in there, pick about 80 records to listen to and leave with at least 20 I really liked - all imports of course. Last time I went there, I picked about 40 records and left only with 2 - that was about 2 years ago. Needless to say, I don't even go there anymore.
I tried shopping at online stores based overseas (UK), but this gets pricy very quickly due to high shipping costs.
I know it's a lot easier to find good trance for people living in Europe - often I wish I lived in Europe for this reason alone.

Anyway, I'll keep on searching and thank you all for your support!

Check out Sasha's new residency at Crobar in NYC. The event is called Fundacion and the next gig is February 4.

Pick up the magazine Mixmag, they have reviews of new tracks in a lot of different genres, and their compilation cd's are really good.

There's a place in Berkley, CA here that has really good selection for a U.S. store. Shipping isn't too bad considering you don't pay tax when living out of state. Otherwise check out beatport for some mp3s to purchase for cheaper. Both have samples so you can see what you like and the latter charts what the best selling tracks are.
