The report by the Ontario College of Family Physicians is linking urban sprawl to higher health risks.

That�s because areas that can be dubbed as �sprawl� are revolving around vehicles, not walking or cycling. And that can be a serious problem as we all know exercise and good health go hand in hand.

�In sprawl environments, there is a reliance on automobile transportation rather than walking, biking or mass public transit because of long distances, hazardous streets and lack of safe sidewalks,� explained Riina Bray from Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre.

The report was based on American neighbourhoods and now the group wants more Canadian research done.

But in the meantime, what can be done to help the problem? The study recommends improved community planning and transit, the conservation of green space and encouraging physical activity.

Im surprised they don't consider the government is always trying to save us from ourselves.
